Powerstroke Blues

I have a 05 F250 6.0 powerstroke. It has a Banks 6 gun tuner, AEM Bruteforce Cold Air Kit, EGR Intercooler Delete kit, Magnaflow Turbo back 5" exhaust, and stage 2 injectors. I changed the fuel pump and filters and the oil at the same time. The truck will start with ether and run off the throttle, but dies as soon as you let off the throttle. Then it will not restart. I have looked for air leaks, but I can't find any. This one has me baffled! Any ideas on what to try next?:scare2:

Not likely the issue but one of your problems is in your 4th sentence, I would NEVER EVER use ether on any modern diesel engine, I don't even use it on old 1970-80s equipment we have on base. I would gas rag an engine LONG before using ether. I have heard of very few conditions that the glow plugs weren't enough to start up and run, and for those few instances there are block heaters.

I have worked on many types of diesels from heavy equipment to trucks to three cyclinder water pumps. I have never had a diesel act this way. I went out this morning to start it and it started and ran rough. I shut it off to try it again and all it would do is crank over. Still confused and really don't know what direction to go.

I would consider re-bleeding the fuel system, there may be some air in there that is trapped.

We're going to need more info here... I see quite a few things wrong and quite a few things unanswered.

First, I don't know what a stage 2 injector is... or who makes it.

Stock fuel pump? What's your fuel pressure? If you're running larger injectors on a stock fuel pump with crappy tuning (ie banks anything) and no fuel pressure gauge to monitor it... you're going to destroy those injectors in a hurry. Of course, you may have a fuel pressure gauge and you may have a fuel system, but I don't know this from your post.

So the truck was running ok before you did the service? That means something is wrong with the service, or it's just a huge coincidence. Has the truck always run like this? When was all this "performance" work done?

What oil and what oil filter are you using. Typically this is a result of a non OEM oil filter, and more specifically one of those oil filters that has it's own cap. They will cause some serious engine damage. FRAM oil filters are ok for this application as they're exactly the same as the OEM Ford ones.

What fuel filters are you using? Stick with OEM Ford or International ONLY.

DO NOT USE ETHER on a diesel engine that has a glow plug system, you're gonna rocket one of the heads off the block.

Ok, now on to other issues. You changed the fuel pump from what to what? You got rid of OEM and went with...? Again, what's fuel pressure? You REALLY need a fuel pressure gauge here. I'd start there.

When you're cranking it and you add ether, you're adding fuel and it's running off of that, so to me it sounds like you're just not getting fuel. A fuel pressure gauge would certainly tell us if we had fuel or not though... (had enough of me telling you to get a fuel pressure gauge yet? :w2:)

When you crank and it's not firing, are you getting any smoke out the exhaust? My guess is no.

Welcome to DB! Sorry if this post sounds harsh in any way, but we're gonna learn ya! :c:

Stage 2 injectors are a size to two sizes bigger than stock that allow for more GPH. It is an OEM fuel pump that was replaced. the pump has 55 psi. All the filters are Motorcraft OEM. The performance work has been done for a few years. When it does finally start it will white smoke. I ran a code scanner on it and no codes were found. Mdub707- your reply was not too harsh. I am not drowning it in ether. I do know the consequences of doing it. I have been dealing with diesels for many years, this one just has me stomped.

Mdub707 05-12-2012 12:36 PM

Again, saying stage 2 tells me nothing. 6.0 injectors are measured by volume and nozzle size in percentages larger than stock. So stockers are 135cc... an upgrade would be like a 155/50 mean 155cc's and 50% larger nozzles than stock. So telling me stage 2, again, tells me nothing. At least if I knew WHO's stage 2's I could go reserach it a little too.

Sounds to me like you're not getting any fuel then. Since you just put a new pump in, I'm going to say there is something wrong there. However if you have fuel pressure then you have other issues. Where are you measuring fuel pressure from, and what are you measuring with?

It would be coincidental if it happened right after the fuel pump and it wasn't a fuel issue.... though possible. We can narrow this down in a hurry for you though.

I do have the 50% larger than stock injectors on there I do know that. I'm checking my fuel pressure from the top fuel filter housing and I went to crack the cap to make sure it wasnt air pressure it was fuel pressure and diesel fuel goes everywhere so I know its not air pressure. I am getting ready to crack the return line to the tank to be double sure there is no air in it. Now the truck just now started on its own, but the idle is erratic but running and the throttle response is almost no existent. I'll know more when I crack the return line.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

The return line was pure fuel no air.

How long have you let it run? I would get it started and let it idle for 10 minutes or so, could have just gotten some air in the tubes to the injectors.

Have you checked your ficm?
