I get around 15-16 daily running around. I have managed better than 21 on the highway, however this was driving from where I live in NY to Woodsville NH. On "my" truck I have to keep it at 65mph, if I run faster my mpg does drop. This is far from a straight flat trip, there are some hills along the way. I would love to make the I-80 run from Omaha to Cheyenne just to see what I could get. I am sure that with the older truck-older strategy, race tuning-locked converter and the right driving style I could get 24mpg.....But would I be having fun?:nope:

Bob wouldn't BS us. He's one of very few I'd trust. He is also running an 03 with (I'm assuming) older programming, which helps and he daily drives on a race tune, so the converter is locked up all the time, which is a lot more efficient as well.

I think that with the tanks on our trucks being such a pain to get full, alot of people have a hard time figuring their mpg. I was with a guy who filled his tank, said it wouldnt hold more and it was up in the neck. I shook his truck and fiddled with it and got 3 more gallons in. Over a 100 mile run 3 gallons would make a huge difference and it could be either way depending on which end of the trip you put the biggest effort in filling the tank. I honestly believe 20-21mpg is possible for most trucks depending on how hard you try, tuning and terrain ect. 13-15 is probably more reasonable for most people. Would I call BS on the 24mpg claim? no I wouldnt, but I would say repeat it a few times and be very sure the tank is full every time. Just to be sure of the results.

I have used my totally stock (Except for K&N air system) 06 6.0 for both commercial hauling and as a DD and I watch my mpgs very closely, especially when I was figuring the cost/mile to run the truck for business.
I do fill to the very top of the neck, shake the truck and fill until most of the time the cap pushes a little fuel out. The best I can get is 17.5 mpg if I run right at 2000 RPM (OEM Tach). The ONLY time I ever did any better was in Maine one day when I was driving a two lane and had time to kill and I hit almost 20 mpg but that was the ONLY time. The worst the truck ever did was going from Phoenix to Salt Lake grossing 26,000+ pulling a 28' goose neck in FWD during a snow storm and that was just over 9 mpg Papachuck you don't want to make the I-80 run from Omaha to Cheyenne you will be fighting a head wind you want to go from Cheyenne to Omaha and catch the tail wind:tu: |
