Do I really need a new turbo?
Ok, so I have a chance to buy a new Garrett Powermax turbo for $1000 or maybe a little less. My question is do I really want/need to right now? I have 82k on my 6.0 and it seems to be runnin fine. I do plan on eventually getting a SCT tunner, then larger injectors, head gaskets and studs when needed and who knows what else. I don't plan on racing my truck, but if I feel the need, I would like to be able to smash the skinny peddle and be forced to sit back in the seat a little! So, again, with all that in mind, do I really need a new/upgraded turbo? Or maybe I should say do I need it now or can it wait? This is just a good price, I think, but I could put the money elsewhere in the truck if I really don't need the turbo. (From what I've seen on you tube, they sure sound good though)!

They're like $1100 shipped brand new... it's not the deal of a lifetime so you don't NEED it now.
What are your future plans? Injector size? Performance numbers? How will you use the truck? |
A Batmowheel is $400, if you don't already know, it's a replacement for the OEM compressor (cold side) that makes BIG torque numbers. I haven't heard anything bad about them yet. I plan on getting one.
Bullseye Power Turbos |
Wow i want one of those batmowheels its like double hp for only 400 dollars! This sounds too good to be true are there any draw backs to it?
---AutoMerged DoublePost--- Nvm not double your hp haha I read it wrong. Still impressive gains for 400 though |

You can get batmowheels for the powermax turbo's now too guys.
Dreamer, we can certainly help you spend your money man. We just need to know what exactly you use your truck for (daily driver I'm guessing? Do you tow at all with it, if so how much weight? What's your budget, and what's your HP goals?). |
It is / will be a daily driver and on occasion haul a gooseneck with farm equipment or horses. As far as horsepower, I don't know. My friend says he is getting 530hp & 915rwt off a dyno with his Duramax. I'll never race him but those numbers sure sound nice! In reality though, I'd just like a little more kick in the seat of my pants when I mash the peddle. My budget doesn't exist, as in I have no funds :td: , so anything I spend I need to save up for.

Any idea what weight's you're towing when you do tow?
|
I have a gooseneck w/ two 10k axles. I don't think I've ever had more than 14k loaded on it. So that weight plus the trailer weight. Not sure what it weighs. That is the heaviest trailer. Our bumber pulls are just for horses or our dirt toys. Not much weight there.

You'll have to be pretty careful with injector/turbo selection towing that much weight. It can get hot quick.
D-maxes are way easier to squeeze power out of. Our heads simply don't flow the air they do. Which is why you can get 800hp out of a d-max with a 66mm charger, yet we are lucky to get 600hp with the same charger. This is also why Ford's always do very well with nitrous, making up for the lack of airflow. |
Okay, well I don't think I really want nitrous (although it might be fun), so what mods and or tunes (on an SCT from Inovative) would you recomend? I have read threads about the Powermax w/ a batmowheel and 190 sticks. I was thinking about the street and the tow tunes, but don't know what the third should be. I have heard the economy tune is a waste of money. I noticed they have an Aggressive Tow/Haul Mode option. I guess I should just cal them and talk to them in person, huh?
Thanks Mdub for all your input (and welcome back!) and to all the others who reply. :c: |
No problem.
190's are probably on the edge of being too large towing those weights, but your best bet is to talk to one of the tuners and see what they can do for a tow tune. I know they can pull quite a bit of fuel out of them in tuning, so you can probably get away with it. The ultimate tow rig would be 190's with 100% nozzles and a smaller compound turbo setup. It would be quick lighting, still able to clean up a bunch of fuel and still enough fuel to have a blast with! |
