Do all 6.0 have oil cooler problems?
 
I have a 2007 6.0 with 49,000 miles on it, so far I haven't had any problems with it, but I've been reading that at around 50,000 miles the engine cooler clogs up and causes problems. Does anyone know if every 6.0 has this problem, or if Ford fixed the problem by 2007? The engine is completely stock, I don't want to start blowing injectors, but at the same time i don't want to spend $2,200 on the bullet proof system if I don't have to.

get a coolant filtration system and it will give you a better chance of not having an issue with it

Had 2 coolers put i my truck by 75k miles. Second one was just because Ford didnt want to take a chance with me coming in again. But not all 6.0 will have a problem. There are a few rare and lucky trucks out there. My sister in law has an 04 thats nearly 300k miles and never had a problem with it yet. Get a coolant filter from Sinister which run about $140 on Ebay.

A coolant filter is key. The oil cooler is just like the EGR cooler and has very small passages for the coolant to flow through, if you have junk (sediment, casting sand, etc) floating around in your coolant then it plugs these holes which ten leads to failure. You can save about $1400 and get the Semi-BulletProof setup from BPD which has the upgraded EGR cooler and a stock replacement oil cooler, then get a Sinister coolant filter. Also when you put the filter on, the recommendation is a new filter every 3 months for the first year, then annually after that. Don't do this, do a change on the 1,3,6&12 month marks for the first year and then annually after that, there is so much in that coolant and that first filter will clog up pretty quick.

I'd suggest you flush the coolant out ASAP. DO NOT use any products during the flush. Just use distilled water till it runs clear. Then use an ELC to get the coolant system back to good health. Install a coolant filter kit. There are several write-ups about flushing. DO NOT use chemicals or other products during your flush.

Why not? Most guys I've talked to use Restore and/or restore +. Some use VC-9 from Ford too.

The short answer is no. Not all 6.0s are ticking time bombs. How well is it maintained? How often do you drive it like a 7000lb Mustang? Mine is no stranger to full rapid acceleration, but I never did it longer than a quarter mile. It has 91K (58K are mine), no coolant filter yet, and runs get. The older they are, the bigger the crap shoot because you don't know what the last guy did with it.

Karl, I bought the truck brand new, Ford did the first 3 years of service, since then I've changed the oil every 7500 miles. As far as driving it, petal to the metal a few times but pretty much has just been driven normal, I tow occasionally

I would not go more than 5k miles on oil, no matter what kind of oil you're using. The 6.0 is a high shearing motor and the oil degrades quite rapidly. Normally it may not be such a huge concern, but when your injection system works off of this same oil, it is more important IMO.

These trucks like to be worked. If you must idle for long times, add the high idle mod.

Sounds like how I drive/maintain mine, I wouldn't be too concerned about breakage. I'm sitting on 91K (about 58K since I bought it) and I haven't had any problems. Although dumping the EGR cooler was WAY over due and a coolant filter is in the near future also. Gauges are your friend, the down fall to my Edge taking a dump was that was my gauge monitor also. My first purchase in Jan is going to be QuadZilla Pulse or similar OBDII plug-in device, I hate not having gauges.
