Best bet is to search FICM on this forum ....there is a video showing how to test while in truck....

Fuel Press

and the numbers you should get ...turned on and cranking ....:hellox:

You need to get numbers testing it while the key is on engine off, cranking, and running. I have one on the bench right now that tests fine with the KOEO, Cranking, but as soon as truck is running voltage starts dropping on it.

Now it cranks for a long time then will finally start but once it is started it will start fine enless it sits for more that a hour or so. What could be wrong with it, going on a trip in a couple of weeks and need the truck. also the check engine light isnt on.

I'd put money of your FICM Being bad

hey guys so we took the truck anyway on our trip to oklahoma and we made it 3hrs from the border when we pulled up to the end of the turnpike for the toll road it died and wouldnt start. about half way down there we had it on cruise and all of a sudden we heard a loud pop and the cruse went off and the abs light came on. when it died we took it to a shop and he told us that the fuel pump went out the low oil pressure went out and it smashed the oil filter a inch and blew all the injector orings he rebuilt the low oil pressure pump put all new orings on injectors and sold us a good fuel pump well we got it back and now its doing it again cranking forever then finally starting and it never really stopped just got better now its back to what it was long strart. any ideas ??? have you ever heard of having the ficm flashed? thats what someone told us to do were totally stuck and taking it to dealer next week sometime so if you could tell us your input that would be great and then mabe it wont be so expensive taking it to dealer
Thanks.

No smoke enless first start up and were hearing it right under the truck on drivers front side, and it will every now and then when downshifting blow a little black smoke

Flashing wont help. You need to test that FICM, it's very easy to do, literally 10 minutes for a NEW-B, you need a buddy, a multi-meter, a 10mm and 8mm ratchet and 2 beers.

Usually starting easy cold and dying or having hard times starting when warm is a high pressure oil leak. Sounds like the mechanic that just worked on it was throwing parts at it.

If you're not getting smoke while cranking, the injectors aren't firing. Could be the FICM or a high pressure oil leak. FICM is stupid easy to check, start there. I'm PM'in you my phone number, I can walk you through the test bud. :c:

Is your truck still dead?

If not what fixed the issue?

Mdub707 07-26-2011 06:44 PM

Yeah I just re-read this whole thing and it sounds like you got taken for a ride at the shop that just did all that fuel system work. Still sounds exactly like a dead FICM. My buddy had the exact thing happen with his FICM. Threw a bunch of codes, cranked hard, started rough for a couple weeks, then one day died driving down the road at 55mph. New FICM fixed it right up. That was back before anyone knew about fixing them.

No smoke when trying to start tells us the injectors are not firing at all, IE a dead FICM.

hey, sorry its been so long just been really busy..we havent done nothing to it since havent had time just drove it. one day a few months ago it died at walmart and wouldnt start we went back the next day and it took it a min but it started. now i looked under the turbo and i see some oil on the bottom of turbo and the turbo hose looks like it has oil on it. also it either blew the turbo hose off or the shop we took it to didnt tighten it well.. any way it runs great other than long cranking and that one time it didnt start like i sayed sorry its been too long since ive been able to get on.

Mdub707 07-31-2012 10:27 AM

oil around the turbo and intercooler connections is normal, since the crankcase vents into the intake in front of the turbo, so there's always a fine oil mist getting sprayed in there. You can tighten as much as you want, you'll still have it. If the boots are loose you'll know it cause they'll blow off when you get boost built up and you will HEAR it.

Oil under the turbo could be a few things... could just be residual oil from having the turbo off, could be the turbo drain, the turbo feed, or the HPOP cover.

The long crank is still probably the FICM, takes about 15 minutes to check with a buddy to turn the key... test procedure at the top of the page. :c:
