2007 Powerstroke reliability?

I'm looking at buying a 2007 Powerstroke and need some advice. I love the Ford body style, but I cringe at the horror stories of the 6.0 engine. I was hoping that Ford had figured the problems out by 2007, but I'm noticing a few dealers that are selling "buy back" vehicles of this vintage. What the hell? Is this engine just a doomed project altogether?

I don't intend on adding any performance modifications. I need it to tow my 10,000lbs boat/trailer rig, the rest of the time my wife will be driving it to and from work.

Can someone provide me with the real 411 on this vehicle?

if you do a couple preventitive things to these trucks they are extremely reliable...

Okay ... do I have to join a secret club to find out what these preventative measures are? :w2:

You can find anything you want to know by reading the 6.0 section of this site. :c:

Nothing wrong with these engines once you fix a couple things.

You have got to be kidding me!

Okay, I'll go elsewhere for my information ... thanks! :argh:

EGR system leaves a lot to be desired. If you are in a state that doesn't require a smog inspection then get a delete kit for a couple hundred bucks, if you are in a nazi state such as CA like I am, buy a BulletProof EGR cooler, you will be glad you did. Another flaw is the heads, regardless of state do the ARP head studs. Ford fix most of the issues by 2007 but those 2 still remain. With studs and EGR taken care of the trucks are very reliable and you can actually start making some good HP/TQ numbers.

Thanks for the insight.

Yes, I'm in CA also, so the EGR upgrade is something I could live with. However, the head issue is another thing altogether. What exactly is the issue with the heads? As I said in my initial post, I don't intend on adding any aftermarket performance to the truck. Will I still need to do the ARP studs?

The truck I am looking at has had a coolant issue in the past. According to the dealer, the intake gasket was replaced. I'm assuming this is EGR related? The truck has only 54K miles on it.

I took a chance on the vehicle I have now, since it has the dreaded 53 block, but I've got 167K out of her, so far, without any issue. I really don't want to dance with the devil a second time, if I can avoid it, since it's only a matter of time before he wins!

The studs are a good idea regardless of plans for the truck. Thr factory head bolts that are put on the truck don't have the holding power and tend to stretch an cause the gaskets to blow even on trucks that are running stock boost.

If that's the case, that might be the deciding factor in my decision ... thanks!
