what is the best oil to run in my powerstroke 6.0
 

Hay guys i was wondering wht would be the best oil to put in my powerstroke 2006 6.0 i have 80k on it and have been running tht rotella 15w-40 in it and was thinking about changing to syn blend or full syn and was wondering what a good oil would bee and what grade i should run i live in arkansas where it may reach 110degf in the summer and 20degf in the winter will 5w-40 be a better oil for that?

If you like the Rotella 15-40, you can try their 5w-40 synthetic. I've heard good things about it. I used Amsoil for a while, the only bad thing about it was the price. I actually run non-synthetic rotella.

I'd either stick with the dino rotella or go to a full syn if you want to go syn. Rotella's syn is made with group 3 basestocks. Still a good product but middle of the road. Mobil is good as is AMSOIL. AMSOIL is only pricey if you're not using it as it is intended:)

Regardless of getting an oil analysis or by going what the bottle says, there is no way I'm running an oil for 25k miles in my diesel, especially on a 6.0. Maybe if I had a bypass setup, I would...

As it is, it's more economical for me to run stadard 15w-40 rotella and change it every 3k miles. I am only going 3k miles because I run WVO through my vegistroke, and if I ever have an injector leak, it's a good way to catch it early. WVO and oil do NOT go well together, it turns to tar.

Speaking of which, do you know of any testing done with WVO and motor oil mixing?

If you're running WVO, then the extended interval is out the window unless you are testing it. OEM is all the farther you can go, so your plan works well.
I'm not aware of any testing on the mixing, just the OA which will give you a percentage of fuel mixture.

There is always a percentage of fuel mixture, and if you've ever seen what WVO and oil do together, you would be changing often too! This is only if you're not having issues. If you get an injector leaking and don't know about it, think about how much fuel is being dumped in the bottom end. WVO will polymerize with bare metal (everything in the bottom end!), and heat will multiply how fast it happens.

Back when I was running Amsoil, I ran up to 12k miles with analysis, but the oil just looked/smelled disgusting. I gave up and decided that the cost I was spending on OA, didn't justify the means, I could have changed the oil for the cost of the OA every 5k miles.

Now that I'm on WVO, it's an easy choice for me, cheap oil (good oil, just not expensive), and change it often.

Is there a good standard oil you recommend? I see posts about the Rotella I'm using, some love it, some hate it.

Rotella does have the love/hate relationship:) It's got a fine oil. I'd stick with it if I were you. Worked so far.
You're correct, you have to give up some things with WVO, but what you gain hopefully makes it worth it. $$$

It's worked for me so far yes, but will it work for a long time? You seem to know more about oil than me! :tu: I'm saving a fortune, it's well worth it.
