what is the best oil to run in my powerstroke 6.0

Hay guys i was wondering wht would be the best oil to put in my powerstroke 2006 6.0 i have 80k on it and have been running tht rotella 15w-40 in it and was thinking about changing to syn blend or full syn and was wondering what a good oil would bee and what grade i should run i live in arkansas where it may reach 110degf in the summer and 20degf in the winter will 5w-40 be a better oil for that?

Mdub707 10-30-2010 08:08 PM

If you like the Rotella 15-40, you can try their 5w-40 synthetic. I've heard good things about it. I used Amsoil for a while, the only bad thing about it was the price. I actually run non-synthetic rotella.

Heath 11-01-2010 08:13 AM

I'd either stick with the dino rotella or go to a full syn if you want to go syn. Rotella's syn is made with group 3 basestocks. Still a good product but middle of the road. Mobil is good as is AMSOIL. AMSOIL is only pricey if you're not using it as it is intended:)

Rotella T5 10w30 end of story

Regardless of getting an oil analysis or by going what the bottle says, there is no way I'm running an oil for 25k miles in my diesel, especially on a 6.0. Maybe if I had a bypass setup, I would...

As it is, it's more economical for me to run stadard 15w-40 rotella and change it every 3k miles. I am only going 3k miles because I run WVO through my vegistroke, and if I ever have an injector leak, it's a good way to catch it early. WVO and oil do NOT go well together, it turns to tar.

Speaking of which, do you know of any testing done with WVO and motor oil mixing?

Heath 11-02-2010 09:53 AM

If you're running WVO, then the extended interval is out the window unless you are testing it. OEM is all the farther you can go, so your plan works well.
I'm not aware of any testing on the mixing, just the OA which will give you a percentage of fuel mixture.

Mdub707 11-02-2010 11:49 AM

There is always a percentage of fuel mixture, and if you've ever seen what WVO and oil do together, you would be changing often too! This is only if you're not having issues. If you get an injector leaking and don't know about it, think about how much fuel is being dumped in the bottom end. WVO will polymerize with bare metal (everything in the bottom end!), and heat will multiply how fast it happens.

Back when I was running Amsoil, I ran up to 12k miles with analysis, but the oil just looked/smelled disgusting. I gave up and decided that the cost I was spending on OA, didn't justify the means, I could have changed the oil for the cost of the OA every 5k miles.

Now that I'm on WVO, it's an easy choice for me, cheap oil (good oil, just not expensive), and change it often.

Is there a good standard oil you recommend? I see posts about the Rotella I'm using, some love it, some hate it.

Heath 11-02-2010 11:57 AM

Rotella does have the love/hate relationship:) It's got a fine oil. I'd stick with it if I were you. Worked so far.
You're correct, you have to give up some things with WVO, but what you gain hopefully makes it worth it. $$$

It's worked for me so far yes, but will it work for a long time? You seem to know more about oil than me! :tu: I'm saving a fortune, it's well worth it.

Heath 11-02-2010 12:42 PM

You bet. Changing every 3-5 the oil will be in fine shape. It's just a matter of how much fuel dilution you're getting. You might just test it once and see what it reads. Then you'll know that running 3-5k will never be a problem.

jimrd 11-02-2010 03:01 PM

i use the rotella diesel oil change every 5000 miles also

Waren Gibson transport use that oil in there fleets also
they go alot further on oil changes

i can not figure out ......a big diesel rig ...how far do they go before changes:hellox:

What do you think the Amsoil is good to for mileage? I've talked to a different Amsoil rep on another forum and even he didn't recommend going past 10k on the Amsoil, and I believe he personally changed it at 7500 miles, just because of how high shearing the 6.0 motor is. Your thoughts?

MUDSTROKIN' 11-04-2010 09:39 AM

The 6.0 doesn't shear down past a 30w So get 10w30 and shearing isn't a problem.

I have been running Shell Rotella Synthetic since 12,000 miles, and now have 49,000 miles. It is really great oil. Truck is quieter too. In fact I run it in everything I own except the lawnmower and log splitter. I even put it in the old 1987 6.9. It leaks a little, but it is 23 years old.

Cheers

I'm new to diesels, this thread really hasn't helped much. How often do you change the oil? Every 3k? Or longer? Is rotella any good? What is the difference in running synthetic to conventional? What's the price?

Mdub707 01-03-2013 08:12 AM

5k mile oil changes for most of us. Some are going 7500-10k, but they're doing oil analysis to verify it.

Figure to do an oil change with a motorcraft oil filter and conventional 15w-40 Rotella, you're looking at probably $80 or so. To do it with Rotella synthetic 5w-40, figure more like $150.

I've used both the non synthetic and the synthetic and like both of them. I use the T6 synthetic currently in both my 6.0 and my TDI.

dlove488 01-03-2013 08:14 AM

Thanks that cleared it up

bkmac 01-03-2013 09:25 AM

I have been doing 5,000 mile changes because I felt I fell into the "extreme use" category. Now that I am not doing any heavy towing I am going to push to 7,500. I am running Rotella T-6 and will have the oil analyzed.

bustedknuckles 01-03-2013 11:05 AM

I ran Valvoline Blue Extreme 5W-40 in my 06 from 500 miles (new), changing it every 7500 miles, until I started experiencing what I concluded was injector stiction issues at roughly 55,000 miles. I changed to a 5,000 mile interval and the stiction issues went away.
I only drive my vehicle 22 miles to and from work each day. I thought this was not extreme, however, evidently it must be, since a 5,000 mile change interval is required to keep the stiction issue away.

Hey guys what about Delo 400 15W30? have been using it since i bought my truck in june of last year. Not against changing brands if there is a better oil out there

Mdub707 01-03-2013 12:20 PM

I've heard of some guys using the DELO stuff, supposed to be good, but never tried it myself.

With oils, it's not like there is one specific oil I can tell you guys is the end all be all to oils. We all have different needs, different mods, live in different areas etc... so there can be more than one answer to this question.

As for the mileage, that's a widely debated topic. Karls03 on here is one that comes to mind who does more miles than most on changes, but he also does oil analysis to back it up. If I'm not mistaken he is also using the T5, which is Rotellas 10w-30 semi-synthetic if memory serves...

It is said that the 6.0 is a "high shearing" motor, meaning it cuts down the oil viscosity as it uses it, quite quickly. So an oil that was supposed to be 40 weight, may only be 30 weight at 5k miles. Hard to say. I change at 5k miles for my own reasons, mostly related to my alt fuel system.

MikeBoroff 01-03-2013 12:33 PM

I have been reading quite a bit about this rev-x additive. Is it really that good:humm::humm:? Can anybody give me a link so that I can get some ordered to try. Oil change due next week and would like to see what difference it makes in my truck. I agree with Mdub707 that all of us guys drive different, live in different areas and use our trucks for different purposes but it seems most everybody is pretty pleased with this rev-x. Seeing as how diesels are not cheap to fix and these 6.0's already have some issues a little peace of mind is worth a little money:tu::tu:

Check KT Performance - a sponsor on here. I ordered mine form them and it was at a good price with free shipping when I ordered it.
