Homemade Ram Air

Has anyone cut the plastic that separates the tube on the front of the air filter housing and the grille out to increase air flow? If so how did you go about it and how well did it work?

scrotom 09-01-2010 05:33 AM

look up zoodad.

HeavyAssault 09-01-2010 06:40 AM

Get a big hole saw, a drill and a dremel. Have fun!! This was the first mod I ever did with less than 600 miles on the truck!!

Mdub707 09-01-2010 11:29 AM

I just used a hacksaw blade and went to town.

Diesel_Daddy6.0 09-02-2010 02:12 AM

How big of a difference did it make?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Also should I cut on the vertical slat side of the grille or the or on the horizontal side?

hock6.0 09-04-2010 07:59 AM

i used a dremal tool and a deck of cards. trace the deck of cards and cut. i also found that it increased the volume of bugs and leafs in the air filter so i covered the hole with a piece of hardware cloth with a piece of screen from a screen door. works good.

parkercoman 09-24-2010 07:54 PM

mine as just a bunch of 1 1/2 inch holes in it

04 Stroke 04-28-2012 08:59 PM

did anyone have problems with water getting into the tube during heavy rain? i cut mine out with hole saw and am a little worried about water getting in?

After notching the fiberglas, I ditched the front of the OEM air box, this helped with my mpg since I had already switched to 35s when I did it. No, I am NOT getting 20 mpg, but it was an improvement.

I haven't had any problems in the rain, but mud racing that my club does is COMPLETELY out of the question!

Ya id recommend being very careful driving your truck through any water after the zoodad mod...ask how i know:w2:

Diesel_Daddy6.0 04-30-2012 01:01 AM

I didn't even know this thread was still active lol. I haven't had any water issues with having mine through the side of the grill. My first scoop was plastic and decided that in the nice heat of going through Arizona and Texas it would get brittle and deposit itself into the filter. Already have the 1/16" sheet aluminum to make a good quality one, just hasn't hit the top of the priority list yet, probably when I get back from the run for the wall in June I'll get it knocked out for y'all, cardboard template it's already made and ready

Mdub707 04-30-2012 09:49 AM

I've had zero water issues in the snow/rain whatever...

HeavyAssault 04-30-2012 01:02 PM

The OEM filter uses synthetic media so rain water isn't too big an issue. Sucking it down like a Big Gulp WILL cause issues.

Diesel_Daddy6.0 04-30-2012 10:56 PM

Having second thoughts on the aluminum, primarily based upon my TIG skills...or lack there-of. What do you guys think about me using plexiglass? Think it'll hold up to the wind forces?

Whats wrong with the stock system? Its one of the best air filter systems ever installed on any vehicle. Seriously.
I dislike International engines and Fords, but the 6.0's air filter system is one of the best. Period.

bobfbigman 05-01-2012 02:11 AM

If you have the aluminum allready cut maybe you could get some small aluminum angle to put in corners and just pop rivit together, should be able to get it at home Depot or almost any hardware store.

We aren't saying anything about swapping out the filter or intake, look up Zoodad on Google pictures.

And bob, I only have the sheet metal, nothing is cut except the cardboard templates

What's wrong with the stock system!?!
1. Trying to suck air through that joke of a hole in the front of the airbox. Taking off that front snorkle gained back some of the MPG that I lost going to 35s. DUH! It could breathe!
2. $73 (my local OReilly Auto Parts price) for a ONE TIME USE Motorcraft filter. I paid $75 for my AiRaid drop in filter almost 6 years ago!

Other than those issues, it's not a bad piece.

So, you got rid of a high quality filter that should last 2+ years in normal conditions, filters better than any other filter on the market and flows more air than that joke AiRaid "filter"?
For what, an AiRaid that filters like crap, plugs up in 1/8th the time and flows half of what the old filter did?
Where was the benefit again? Is $75 really that much of a strain on your budget? How did you afford the truck in the first place then?

I should have read your information closer before I entered an intellectual debate with an unarmed opponent. Take your Ford hating GMC driving self back to your side of the street and mind your own business. I wouldn't have even wasted my time had I seen that piece of information.

If its not Dodge guys sticking their noses into our business, it's GM guys. :fu2:

Mdub707 05-02-2012 08:31 AM

Whargoul is only here on DB to start fights. Please just ignore the troll.

I will not argue, an OEM Ford air filter is the BEST as far as filtration goes. However, Whargoul must have forgot he's on a site dedicated to the modifications of diesel pick ups, typically in the sense where we gain power. The stock system isn't going to support the HP goals most are reaching for unfortunately, so we put different filters on.

Dude the best thing you can do for a 6.0 is let it breath and the stock filter is not enough

Mdub707 05-02-2012 09:04 AM

The general internet rule of thumb has always been that the stock filter will support up to 500rwhp.... though I'm not so sure I believe it anymore. It IS a great filtration setup, no doubt. I really like my AFE dry filter setup though. :c:
