Cleaned my egr last night... pics inside

Took the time last night to pull out my Egr vavle and clean it and i'm glad i did...

If you wanna do it(i suggest you do if you haven't) here's whatcha do.
The EGR valve is located beside your oil filter housing. remove the plugin from the sensor and use an 8mm socket and extention to remove the 2 bolts that hold it in. once you remove the 2 bolts you'll have to work the part a little to loosen it up. i wiggled it back and forth till i got it to where i was able to turn it, then i tied some steel wire through the 2 bolt holes and used leverage off the alternater with apry bar to get it to come out. trust me you'll need ot do this. After removing i sprayed heavily with carb cleaner and scrubbed it down till it was clean. be careful of the 2 oring gaskets on the valve and don't mess them up. this hasn't been explained to me in any other egr cleaning threads so i'll go ahead and tell y'all. if you reach in between the bottom of the valve and the middle and you can get your fingers around that little shaft you can lift the valve up and clean better in and around it. once clean just reinstall and plug back up. this seemed to make my engine run a little smoother and better but mine was pretty bad off. Take a look....

Sorry the pics are a little blurry i took the pics with my phone and at night time.

Tools to clean:
My girlfriends toothbrush(not recommended to use your gf's) :ph:

night and day difference, looks good. Did you do any cleaning in the intake?

Begle1 02-12-2010 01:15 PM

Do you take the O-rings off before you scrub it or submerge it in cleaner?

MUDSTROKIN' 02-12-2010 01:23 PM

i was actually gonna ask someone a good way of going about cleaning my intake. and no i didn't take them off i was just gentle around them

From now on you need to remove the orings due to some chemicals people might use will dissolve them. But If that happens local Auto shops have them for a couple bucks. But your valve was defintly due for a good cleaning. Looks good, And defintly a good thread and pics!!

Nice job MUDSTROKIN', I used to clean my EGR at every oil change interval.
I see that you are running tunes, can't you have them write it into your tunes to turn off the EGR Valve? :humm:

hock6.0 02-16-2010 08:50 AM

my egr valve looks about the same when i pull it out to clean. i use the same method and tools to. i don't know of a good way of cleaning the intake aside from removing it cmpletely and giving it a good cleaning. good job man and good post!:yeah:

MUDSTROKIN' 02-16-2010 08:53 AM

Forced - i don't have the kit yet to delete it and that's a 6-8 hour job. i just wanted ot clean it up in the mean time.

And diesel - i have an edge, they don't have custom tuning so what they send me is what i get.... i'm trying to get an SCT with custom tuning though :tu: i hear it's a whole different truck over the edge tuner

Thanks Hock:choochoo:

Thank you so much Mudstrokin !

You just saved me a bunch of time tryin to find someone who has done this, my 04 turbo has a code showing the EGR has insufficient flow, I suspect mine will look as bad or worse!

This is a great place! Glad I found it. :tu:
