That hose usually leaks when cold or during warmup.

Like I said - that early cooler hardly ever leaks. I'll need the whole vin - the last 9 deal doesn't work on the technician end of things in Canada. :)

With a 19 degree spread, I would definately replace the oil cooler. As well - there is a screen under the oil cooler, I cant remember the basic part number offhand, but it should also be replaced. Likely some of the screen elements will be torn or missing.

Please help me on this.....
The VIN is 1FMSU43P73EC24294
So I started to dig into it today and I was in the middle of taking the turbo off. I can't get the dang bolts out. I had to use a 3/8 socket that was worn out and an impact gun to get one off, the 10mm kept trying to round it off. What should have taken me 2 hrs has turned into 3 or 4. I just wanted to take the turbo off, get a look see at things, and install it back on til another date. If the EGR cooler is bad, will it leak outside the cooler and onto the engine valley, or just internal? I want to try to understand this.....the EGR goes into the intake, the cooler goes next to it, the two are separate items, if the cooler goes bad and leaks, it will leak into the intake manifold were the EGR goes. On start up, everytime it sits for a while, it chugs almost like its missing until it runs for a couple minutes then clears up. Im wondering if the cooler is leakin ginto the intake when it sits and thats burning when I start. Is that possible? Also, my ECT was 187 and EOT went from 199-206. If I need the oil cooler thats fine, also is this EGR cooler delete worth a damn or is it junk. Im kinda tight on cash like everyone else so I need as cheap as possible. eBay Motors: EGR COOLER BYPASS 6.0 Powerstroke Diesel BIODIESEL (item 160309149315 end time Feb-08-09 18:23:59 PST) or this one eBay Motors: 03-07 6.0 POWERSTROKE FORD EGR COOLER BLOCK OFF KIT (item 360126961209 end time Feb-04-09 17:19:36 PST) Im ready to burn this thing. Thanks again.

That VIN's no good - maybe a typo?

Ahh man those turbo bolts are NO fun.

The EGR cooler will leak into the exhaust and intake. When you have it off - look and see if there's coolant stains in the exhaust passages.

I'd hang an oil cooler on it, and maybe take the egr cooler to a rad shop and get it leak checked if you are having doubts.

That little hose has two o-rings in it, those are likely whats leakin.

I wouldn't delete the EGR on my own truck, FWIW.

Your running like poop is likely some sticky injectors or a weak FICM. How many miles on the unit, and whats the temperature like there?

springhillracer 02-02-2009 07:41 PM

1fmsu43p73ec24284. They messed up on the insurance card. Truck has 75k on it. The hose is orange and I see a little puddle about the size of a dime right under it. I also noticed on the last oil change that there was some coolant leaking down the oil pan. I am assuming thats sitting on the valley and leaking down the back side. Its not a very big leak, I had put the coolant system on some pressure and it only dropped 3 pounds in an hour. As I was removing the turbo today so I could replace that hose, thats when I ran into the issue with the turbo bolts. I have a 400 mile trip this weekend, then I was going to come back and get the stuff and replace it. I guess Im just going to get the bolts loose and put it all back together and wait until I get the stuff and do it. As for the missing, the truck has been doing this for a year. Its not specific to temp change. Its only when I let it sit for a while. Would that cause a miss if its getting into the intake then into the cylinder when it sits and then when I start it it takes a minute to burn off? Ford said I need to reprogram the PCM, TCM and FICM to the latest level and then recheck. FWIW, I appreciate the help you are giving me. I have a strong auto back ground and I have been around cars my whole life, and I think Im going to take your advise and get the EGR cooler checked and replace it if needed. I also see a little brown in my coolant so Im assuming the two are mixing somewhere.

Big Angry Hillbilly 02-02-2009 07:51 PM

You don't need to take the turbo off to change that hose.

As for the reflash, yeah, you probably need it flashed up to the latest inductive heating reflash. Do the injectors 'rattle' when you turn the key on at first?

MSN lone_gnmn@hotmail.com or AIM moose9c1 if you have either.

bypass hose

I just had Ford replace my EGR bypass hose.I had the small leak when sitting over night. They said it was rodent damage and would not be covered under warranty. They could not show me the old hose because I did not ask them to save it.$479.00Do I have any recourse.

springhillracer 03-19-2009 06:37 PM

not sure if you can or not. I did the one on my truck myself and what a pain in the balls. What kind of warranty do you have? They are not easy to do and if it was a rodent, there are other things he could chew on before he gets to that coolant hose. Do you know if your old one was red or blue?

nightmoves 03-20-2009 12:19 PM

Don't know the color because they wouldn't show me.I am going back to the dealer this morning to try and get more info.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Picked up the hose from dealer this morning(orange)no teeth or gnaw marks, just a small scrape from probably a tool when installing or uninstalling, only the outer layer. No way possible to leak there.I am thinking the tech saw the nest assumed it was chewed but was actually the o ring leaking.Service manager is looking in to it

Big Angry Hillbilly 03-21-2009 09:43 AM

Uhh, yeah. You got hosed. Orange hoses are the leakers.

And if the tech followed the proper workshop manual procedure, he would have CUT the hose to remove it.

What labor time did you get charged for this?

(Sounds to me like the tech just didn't feel like getting paid 1.0 hrs to do this under warranty, plus a .4 cooling system leak inspection.)

nightmoves 03-21-2009 02:59 PM

It was the orange hose and he did not cut it.It is still one piece and other then a tool mark on the outer skin it is fine. They charged me 3 hours $320.00 labor,$54. for hose,$7.00 for "o"ring $15.00 shop supplies. No mention of cooling system check.Service manager is supposed to call me back Monday. When I got it back the Degas tank was one inch below min cold fill.Thankyou for your tech help.
