Which Is A Better Long Term Investment?

Ok, I need opinions people because I honestly don't know a lot in this area. Which would be a better investment, Water/methanol injection or the Banks Techni-Cooler Intercooler including the high ram intake?

I am looking to lower my EGT's. I know the water/methanol in cheaper, but I am wondering how it will do long term. If anyone out there is running either of these products, please throw me some opinions. :humm:

YMMOT 09-21-2008 04:32 PM

How high are your EGT's? Do you have a turbo back exhaust?

Water/meth will continue to cost you money with the purchase of distilled water and meth. Also water/meth will increase yor chamber pressures, anything approaching 40% meth puts your head gaskets ate risk with a 6.0, unles you have head studs already.

I'd say increasing the efficiency of the intercooler would be the route I'd go if I had the money.

BWat 09-21-2008 06:09 PM

My EGT'S average in the high 700's to mid 800's. I have a 4" MBRP cat-back exhaust. I am leaning the way of the intercooler but I want to know how they work for people in real life applications. i read a lot of product reviews on both products but I can't I can't find any customer reviews.

is the 700-800* EGT's at WOT? if so i'd skip on both. the intercooler and intake will be a better building block for future mods than water meth will be..... the intercooler will give you a nice little jump in HP and TQ too.... and it'll always be there and you will never have to re-fill it.

oh and for a better long term investment i'd put money in land and houses.... never a vehicle..... lol

I have the Techni Cooler and on average it lower my egts anywhere from 100 to 250 degrees depending on the situation. At 70ish with my mods its at about 600. When I was dynoing my truck the IC was hot to the touch on the intake side and ice cold on the outlet, kinda cool! All it has was a fan blowing on it. Plus with the high ram and larger piping it flows alot more cfms. The IC itself is ALOT thicker and bigger than the stock on as well. Hope this helps ya, anymore q's you have just ask! :c:

Just out of curiosity, what was your EGT's before you installed the intercooler. Everyone says the reason my temps are so high is because of my 37 inch tires, which I can understand. and can anyone tell me what WOT stands for? I am still learning the lingo:argh:.

94cummins12v 09-21-2008 11:28 PM

wide open throttle

BWat 09-22-2008 07:23 PM

Copy, that makes seance. If there are any other acronyms I should know don't hesitate to pass them on. No those temps are not WOT, those temps are normal driving around town and freeway driving at approx. 65 mph.:madd:

smokin_h 09-22-2008 09:40 PM

x2 on the intercooler

BWat 09-22-2008 11:22 PM

How high are the EGT's for your Powerstroke?

YMMOT 09-23-2008 09:19 AM

3 Attachment(s)
Running empty I see about 700* at 70 mph. My truck has a Quad Xzillaraider 160 with a 3.5" downpipe with a 4" exhaust and no cat.

Towing my 12' tall 13,000lbs 5th wheel at 65 mph up a slight climb I saw the following with my Quad set at 160:

Attachment 5990 Attachment 5991

Just for reference, this is what I am towing.

Attachment 56108

Empty my EGT's are anywhere between 750-900 at 70mph. Towing my 20' car hauler they are about 900-950.
I would go the IC route over meth.

BLACK_06POWERSTROKE 09-24-2008 09:58 AM

the intercooler from banks is one of the very few products they make that i would recomend. the highest egt i have hit with mine was around 1200 and that was climbing up eisenhouer pass on I 70 12,000ft el. on SL given it HELL...... typically my egts dont get over 950 normal driving on the interstate. also another thing that would help you out ALOT is taking the cat off and reaming it out and putting it back on im not sure what kind of emmsion tests you have to pass if its just a visual or if they actually hook up to the exhaust. but if nothing else atleast get the bigger downpipe you can still hook your factory cat up to a bigger downpipe.

Man you are very brave pullin that camper with you chip maxed out:pca1: i hope you have head studs :rocking:

Benjamin 09-24-2008 10:12 AM

it just hit me. are these EGT reading PRE-TURBO or POST-TURBO? there is a big difference here between the two. where is the EGT probe?

BWat 09-24-2008 06:54 PM

The probe was placed in the bend of the exhaust manifold. I assume that is pre-turbo.

Benjamin 09-24-2008 07:19 PM

yes if it is in the exhaust manifold and not the down pipe then it is pre-turbo. if those numbers were post-turbo then there would be a definite problem.....

YMMOT 09-25-2008 10:59 AM

Yes my truck has head studs.

My boost numbers are generally no higher than stock and my EGT's are typically lower than running on stock levels.

My probe is located on the driver's side exhaust manifold just before the bend.

BLACK_06POWERSTROKE 09-25-2008 08:42 PM

do you still have you egr on your truck???

YMMOT 09-25-2008 09:49 PM

For now.

Trust me I am not one that beats on my truck when towing. If I am pulling a longer steep grade the chip will get shut off. When pulling a 6% grade the truck never gets above 2500RPMs which means 50 and 55 most times. I pull no faster than 65 mph on the flats. I'm just not in that much of a hurry. Personally, I'd love to have 4.30 gears in the truck so I could run 60 mph at almost 2,000RPMs.

Oh, and when my head gasket let go the truck was stock pulling a 6% grade up US95 out of Idaho into Oregon.

BLACK_06POWERSTROKE 09-27-2008 04:03 PM

lol i forgot toturn my chip down one time while pulling some decent sized hills. my egts were smoking hot :ph: luckily i caught it before i melted it down

Red_Rattler 09-27-2008 05:21 PM

Down?! I turn mine up when I hit a hill!

Diesel Dawgs Performance 09-27-2008 05:56 PM

Have you looked at a Spearco Intercooler?

Red_Rattler 09-27-2008 06:12 PM

Do they use bigger tubing from intake to output as well?

My egts don't get high when climbing, even with the chip turned up. Typically on a climb I can keep my temps around 1100. Remember, I don't drive by MPH on hills, I drive by RPM and ~2500 is it for me.

Stumblefoot 11-16-2008 07:11 PM

where would I find info in the Spearco Intercooler? I know where to find Banks :)
