if u dropped compression down to 17:1, the engine will still start. but it would need to be above 50 degrees. and lots of cranking. one company did this, they did have a video of starting the truck at 50 degrees. took 1.5 mins of cranking to start without ether.

they NEVER came from the factory with 17:1 comp.

To the original poster, Yes you can, I have had the stock turbo set up off a 94 IDI on my 92 for almost 10,000 miles now with no problems, and I love it... I would sugest getting a new downpipe as the factory one sucks, get some gauges, turn up your fuel, and adjust the wastegate, they're set to 5 or 6 lbs from the factory I'm set to 8 now. To adjust it you need to remove it because the turnbuckle is pinned from the factory so it needs to come off and have a tap run through it, then put it back on the shaft to where it was and roughly 9 turns will get you to 8 lbs, ATS claims 3 turns per pound. Try not to lose the clip that keeps the actuator rod on the waste gate, it will fall off then you will have no boost and a LOT of black smoke (don't ask how I know).

deieslcawler and rjjp are both right. I'm still not quite use't to turbo straight pipe whistle but then I never turn on the radio either.

He im new to the board and rjjp spoke about a new downpipe for the turbo install on an IDI. Does anyone know where to find one or do you weld one up yourself.
