1989 f-350 7.3 starting problem

ijust got this 89 and it cranks fine but wont start unless i use starting fluid was told the glow plug relay was bad so i replaced it but still wont start right. when i turn on the key the wait to start light stays on for about 2 seconds the goes out and you can hear a loud clicking sound comming from under the hood for a min or 2. i putr a test light on the out post of the relay and it flashes really fast for as long as the clicking sound then stops . can anyone tell me what might be the promlemand thanks for and help

i would think thay too but i dont think the glowplugs are getting the juice they need to even warm up let alone get hot enought to start the truck .

right or you could have the relay hooked up wrong. it happens.

check glow plug wires in side wiring harness, I have had wires breaking down in the center of to wire and one the ends both will cause the clicking. Hope it helps!

Bad glow plugs will cause what you are describing. The controller senses the resistance in them, as they heat up resistance increases and the controller will turn them off when the resistance reaches a certain point. Bad/dead GP's create a lot of resistance and will fool the controller into thinking they plugs are hot enough. A quick way to check your GP's is to attach a test light to the postive battery terminal and touch the connecter on each GP. If the light comes on the plug is still working. A better test would be to use a quality electrical tester to check the actual resistance which should be between .5-1 ohm. Some plugs may test good with the light, but still aren't working to there full potential.

on some of these new relay's they hook up differently from what was there before. i know the one's you buy from NAPA do.
