Weird pickup while driving

Got the truck running now..but while driving down the highway, I'll hit the gas and then when I get up to speed for awhile all of a sudden the truck picks up speed to where it actually should be with my foot on the gas pedal.

I'm thinking it needs a tuneup (spark plugs+wires)? Or is the Glow Plugs actually the spark plugs to? I believe they have newer AC Delco glow plugs that were put in (I found the old glow plugs in the AC Delco packages) I'm new to diesel so yea..

The trans shifts a little rough, I put in some of that Lucas trans stuff and some SeaFoam for the engine ..that seemed to helped..for awhile but its doing it again. Other than that though the truck runs great.

ok, first off. these dont have spark plugs.

second GET THEM AC DELCO GLOW PLUGS OUT!!!! they are known to swell and break off. only run motorcraft or beur.

third the surging you are feeling is probably air in the fuel system. check all your lines from tank to pump. also return lines. CHECK the F/W seperator. they leak also.

i was going to say you are probably suckin air

What exactly I'm I checking the lines for? And where would I look? What the hell is a F/W seperator?

For the glow plugs..any cheap place to buy those?

F/W = fuel/water separator. Water harms the fuel system big time, especially the injector pump. Hence the need for a separator. Does it start right up after sitting for 4 hours of more, or do you have to crank on it for a little bit??

ZTMIKE 10-24-2009 06:42 PM

Seems to start up normally? Couple days ago though it took awhile to turn it over.

So what I'm checking for? Air in fuel line okay..but how do I tell? Where would I start looking? Where's this F/W sep.?

If you had air in the fuel, it wouldn't have much for power and run/idle like crap, like it was running out of fuel all the time. That and you would have a hard time getting it started in the morning. I would replace the fuel filter, then go from there. How long has the truck sat before you got it running again??

ZTMIKE 10-24-2009 07:36 PM

Not long..it didn't really "sit" I just didn't drive it much..the battery wouldn't hold a charge and I traced it back to the stock radio..the time on the radio wasn't shutting off, took the radio out and bought 2 new batteries and changed the battery cables.

But yea..the truck idles fine, just it has that weird pickup going down the highway.

Far as the fuel filter goes, is there a certain brand I should be buying? It seems almost every engine part I have to buy a certain brand. :humm:

I noticed this thread about it: https://www.dieselbombers.com/ford-8...s-dummies.html

Do both tanks have to be full?

wildbill 10-24-2009 07:45 PM

Wix or Fleetgaurd are two good brand of filters. When you change out the filter(s) DO NOT use transmission fluid to fill them. ATF has friction modifier in it and it'll plug injectors and cause wear. Use diesel fuel only.

O your talking about lubing the fuel filter with diesel fuel correct? Do you fill the fuel filter with it to?
