My 1990 Idi recently started giving me a problem starting once it's warmed up. First start it fires right up anytime I turn it off afterwards it takes forever to crank. Sometimes t have to let it cool for a long time before t try again and it works

Do a serch in this forum , Tons of info an Ideas to look through , we just had the same issue with another truck so there are plenty of recent posts on the fix's..

I had this problem a few months ago, it was my IP. Fired right up cold, but once it got warm, had to let it sit for at least 1/2-45 min for the IP to cool of. What it is, from what I recalect, is the housin of the IP gets heat soaked from engine bay heat and the internals of the IP cool. Which of corse lets it shrink a bit and the tolerances are not tight enough to produce the high injection pressures.

One thing I have noticed, when the lift pump isnt pushing enough fuel, there isnt enough fuel running through the pump to cool it ( causing it to lock up till its cooled down ) ..

That being said , what is your fuel pressure @ the filter housing ?

I'm leaning towards this explanation as well.

I know its a real common issue , thinking its most likely mor ethe issue than the IP in of its self , these pump have gone for 300K with out a failure and some guy tells someone with 120K that the pump is shot ??? WTH ??? DONT THINK SO !!!!


Mine is factory and has 187K ... never been off that I was aware of , I had mine rebuild out of habbit and because I didnt know better and took bad advise ( i was told later by the fuel shop that most are in reasonable shape and just needed a little here and there parts , nothing big , seldom do they come in toasted ) ... just sayin ..

Most likely the IP. This is a common symptom when they get tired - no hot start. You can confirm by pouring a bucket of cold water over the pump. If it starts, well you get the picture - it was already explained.

Internal lockup? I don't think so.

I agree...

The most common issue it that the fuel solenoid goes bad .. and of coures the Fuel shop will be happt re-build , and charge accordingly of course .. all just for a little solenoid .. :dang::argh::ouch:... :td:

His sig says the truck has 376k miles on it, if original I would say he got his moneys worth from it. I know they can go for a long time, my 86 that I sold to a friend is still purring along with over 208k miles with the original IP and injectors and shows no signs of stopping.

These pumps CAN go for 300k, however there is a lot of bad diesel right out of the pumps, which you all know will do quite a bit of damage on its own. Also there is not a great amount of lube for the fuel system from the new fuel.
