Dodge 6.7 A/C broke??
 

I have a 2007 dodge 6.7 3500 dually with 70,000 miles and the a/c went bad. Cold a/c light comes on but clutch does not come on. There is an oily film under truck by a/c compressor.

If I was to have the freon sucked out (enviromental safe) could I replace the compressor and any other parts myself. Dealership is quite pricey on their job quote.

Any help is appreciated???

The freon in use now doesn't have the environmental concerns to worry about. Chances are it is already out of freon since you see an oil film and the safety switch is keeping the compressor from coming on. You might want to double check because the leak could be from the compressor a hose or possibly even the pressure switch. It is better to double check than spend money unnecessarily. After you fix the leak you will have to evacuate the system before recharging it. It sounds like you are handy enough that you should have no problem doing the work yourself. You could use a compressor from an old refrigerator or freezer to make a vacuum pump to evacuate the system.

gradyc thanks for the input. I plan on pumping up the system with freon today and see if the leak may be coming from a hose / line under the truck. Does anyone know the low side specs for pressure and high side specs for pressure???? Also vacuum specs for evacuate the system

The low side will run between 35 and 60. The high side is usually 250 to 300. When I am charging one I feel the low side hose coming out of the firewall. When it goes from cool to feeling very cold stop charging. When it suddenly feels a lot colder it has some liquid freon left after the evaporator and adding more makes it cool less. As far as the vacuum you want it as close to 30 inches as you can get. I usually leave the pump on for at least 30 minutes after it reaches full vacuum.

On some of the over the road trucks,when you recharge the system you have to put a certain amount in or you can over charge the system.On the trucks they'll have a sticker on the fire wall stating how many pounds are suppose to go back into the system.I'm not sure if pickups have the same sticker.
