Save your money. I have the identical bumper on my Chevy, it's ok but not near as beefy as the Herd on my Dodge. I haven't hit anything with the Chevy yet, but I fear a deer will ruin it. Granted it will keep the truck going, but it's still going to do some damage to it. My Herd has been tested against an antelope at 60 mph and it came out with the bugs wiped off.

this is enough to convince me.....if im correct i think the truck pictured above also smacked a deer at 55......neither did much damage.....

Duluth's bumper was ruined when he hit a deer, and he went to a steel after that.

A friend of mine hit a deer with his 05 Dodge with stock bumper and got stranded. He put on a regular ali-arc and hit another one and did not get stranded but still had the same repair bill as the fender got pushed back into the door again. He has a steel one now also.

There are at least a hundred trucks around here with ali-arcs and half of them look like crap after getting bent up from a deer.

Now I'm not saying an ali-arc isn't going to help out, because I know it's better than stock. However if you don't want any trace after hitting a deer or antelope, you better look at something else. For the money that my "custom" ali-arc cost, I would have been better off paying more for a Herd or just going cheaper with a steel.

Just offering my first hand opinion to help you avoid the mistake I feel I made.

I am going to build a front bumper out of ½" plate for my truck, unfortunantly most pre-made bumpers wont work with a snowplow setup:booo:

all some perty good ideas here....whatever i do its gotta stop a deer...too many hit round here every year

Good luck!! I've seen ones that have taken on a bull elk, but a moose..... I don't think so.

LOGANSTANFORTH 04-29-2009 01:24 PM

find a company that builds steel ones anywhere near as nice as the Ali's and ill buy one, all the steel ones look like something some yank neck hillbilly made in his garage.....the one like Duluth's for a 1st gen was less than 1500 plus the ride......plus HERD dosent even offer one for a 93 and older....

and you do realize i live in florida right.....as in the deer are the size of a medium dog......you hit anything good sized and its going to take out ALOT of stuff on that truck, especially after it rolls over the hood or down the side......a bumper wouldnt of helped my 2001 F150 when i hit a deer in the head and it rolled down the bedside ruining everything from the headlight to the tail light.....

High quality for you. Notice they don't weld the inside corners on the uprights. The pipe is not welded all the way around either. They obviously throw all the pieces in one jig and weld what they can get to and call it good, instead of welding the uprights first then welding in the pipes.

Also take a look at the custom paint job i had to do after the first time I turned on the headlights. The bar needs to be an inch higher.

Yep, high quality engineering here:choochoo:

notalent 04-30-2009 09:30 AM

if you go to my profile you'll see mine i can't get a really good one to upload as my computer is not wanting to coperate. I built mine in about five hours start to finish not counting paint or mounting. hit three deer and some trees with it so far and have just had to touch up the paint

Look at the bends in the flat front piece of the uprights. Looks like someone bent them over their knee. That particularly bugs me as I have a sheet metal shop and know how easy and quick that would have been to do right.

The other pic just shows the weird angles on the bottom skirt coming up to the bumper. Just not well thought out in my opinion, and looks redneck built to me.

Like I said the bumper is better than nothing, but there are much better options out there. I was thinking about getting one for my Fodge just because of price, but I am going a different way now.

For a guy that goes by "notalent" that looks pretty darn good. Nice job :U:

LOGANSTANFORTH 04-30-2009 01:00 PM

i emailed Herd and they wont get back with me on a price for a Super Road Train for my 93 dodge (the pickup truck ones are ugly)......so apparently they arent as eager to sell them as Ali was, cause they had me a quote in less than an hour....

Hey it's your story, you can tell it anyway you want.

Personally I like the 98-02's the best. I'd like to get an 01 or 02 dually quad cab just for fun, but I already have too many projects ongoing. :humm:

MossBack 05-02-2009 10:14 PM

in my work truck i hit a bull elk at 40 mph with just a bolt on Ranch hand.
It dented the fenders and hood but without it it might have come through the windshield.

For the price ranch hands are good. Ill take some pics of the service truck next week for ya.:U:

You won't put a 4-wheeler through that set of horns Cody. That's not thin expanded metal, that's catwalk steel.

satanicrepublican 05-28-2009 11:01 AM

Beerplay, that bullnose looks sick. A critter could surely go around, or over it. But if it didn't, how do you reckon it would hold up? Aint Ranchhand bumpers steel? As they say "if you can't Dodge it....." Do y'all suppose it would be best to center punch the unfortunate ungulate, as opposed to trying to drive around it and having it dance down the side of your truck?
