mercedes om617 2000 jeep xj
I have been planning on putting the om617 in a 2000 jeeo xj for close to five years now. I am just now getting around to it. My problem is my xj has the automatic transmission in it and i haven't been able to find an adapter for it. I have been thinking about making and adapter to bolt the np231 transfer case right to the mercedes transmission. Has anyone out there tried that yet?

Most of the swaps using the Benz trans have gone with a divorced t/c.

I have thought of that. i also found a nice adapter kit for a 700r4 tonight, i think i am leaning that way now.
|
I sure like my 700r4. The super low first gear really works well with this motor.

These people make a nice kit for 700r it is were i got mine.Mercedes diesel info Vette Attachment 21153 I starter with the a/t changed it over to 5 speed with this kit with a few mods |
that is the one I am looking at. It looked like high quality to me. if I have to buy something, I only want to buy it once.

They were good to me I had a problem with mine but made it good and gave me some money back Bob is the owner is a real smart guy.

Well all I need to do now is start collecting the parts. I have a line on a couple 300D's for a good price. Which ever one I choose looks decent enough to drive around and play with until I am ready to pull the engine.

Hey Bud I just started my walk down this path
I know this is old but how did it turn out?? and question on the motor mounts...what did you use??? Im working on a 97 xj and 82 merc using the auto trans with the merc4x4 kit... any help would be great! thanks! |
There are several other complete Cherokee build threads on this site, you can use the search function to get at them ( Mercedes Cherokee) are good search words. There are also some helpful threads on trans shifting on NAXJA.org. I was able to get mine to shift after a fashion, but not too my liking. The home made shifters are not too difficult to make as there are only 3 shift solenoids in the jeep AW4.
Have fun with your project, try and start your own build thread , with lots of pictures |
I did this swap in my wife's '88 cherokee with the aw4 and just made a bracket to mount the tps to. That way the original transmission controller still operated the transmission. On a side note I have the Koch adapter from that swap for sale if anyone needs one. After months of work getting all the kinks worked out of this swap making everything work including the air conditioning, her engine lost two rod bearings and killed itself after about 50 miles on the road. (Never trust the previous owner when she says she shut it down as soon as she wrecked the donor mercedes...:bat:) In fact I have everything except a good crankshaft for the engine too, now that I think about it. Rebuilding one of these engines is not very cost effective so I went another direction after the failure.

WOW that's Garbage! Im sorry to hear that! Especially after all the work..
I have a question on the motor mounts. Selling those? and the AC was custom bracket? |
My mounts are scrap metal, I cut them off with a plasma cutter, I was that cranky.:dang: My mounts used urethane spring bushings and they transmitted too much vibration anyway. I mounted the original jeep a/c compressor where the mercedes alternator was and mounted the jeep alternator where the mercedes a/c compressor was. Both required some fab work, but worked out great for the short time they were in there.
On a side note, I swapped in a 304 out of my cj-5 and the wife loves it (put a 401 in the cj-5)! I didn't gain much in fuel economy like I was planning with the om617, but what a kick in the pants it is to drive now! (I know this doesn't fit the theme of this forum, sorry) |
