Any of you willing to do a swap on my junk
I have an 87 GMC Suburban that needs a cummins powertrain. Any of you guys that have done these swaps want or know who and how much it is going to take to have this done?

If I could just get into a building, I'd be more than happy to do conversions, done a few Dodge ones already.

Mark:
I got your PM, but it wont let me send you one until my post counts up. ---AutoMerged DoublePost--- My question to you and to anyone; What would be a rough idea of how much this will cost from start to finish? ---AutoMerged DoublePost--- Now I know there's many ways to do this, but I am talking the way that will cost the least to get the burb just to where it will pull my 25 foot camp trailer and two wheeler on a small trailer up the canyon without heating up or breaking down. ---AutoMerged DoublePost--- After that, I can bomb proof it a little at a time.:tnt::cannon::bombin::bomb21::bomb: ---AutoMerged DoublePost--- Next question is; Those of you that put these cummins engines in, where do you get them? And those who do this on a very limited budget, what are some tips? |
buy a complete truck dont try piecing it together. and make sure everything runs and works good before buying it. but no matter what way you look at it it isnt a cheap conversion in general.

Mechanically sound high-mileage worn out beater trucks (1st/2nd Gen Dodges) are available for alot less than a long block, even a used one.
|
Here in Utah I use KSL.com classifieds to find stuff. Where do you guys from out of this area find your 1st/2nd gen Dodges?
|
Classifieds, Craigslist, ebay, drivin the back roads, they're out there, you just gotta be on the lookout for them :c:

Hands down, I have gotten most of my junk off of Craigslist.
Moon, man I'm sorry, but I'm not getting reply notifications from this forum. My number is 402-780-5127, if you want to talk. Mark. |

So then in your case, why even do it. If you are buying a complete truck anyway that runs and works good? Why not just drive that dodge you bought instead of putting it in a chevy, that doesn't have a solid front axle?

I use Craiglook: Craigslist Search for some of my C/L searches.
Moon, finding one that will RUN for $1000 isn't hard, it's getting one that will run and DRIVE for that much. Having said that, I did drive a 5 speed truck back from California once for $800. If you don't mind traveling, look in Oklahoma, Louisiana and Texas, as most of what I have found cheap was in those areas. As I mentioned earlier CALIFORNIA is also a good place to search, seen some really sweet deals on rustfree extended cabs for between $700-$2,000 out there. Almost bought a 2wd dually 5 speed E/C for $1500 in the LA area. Mark. |

but really mine wasnt that expensive. i added it all up the other day, total of about $3100 gross. after selling my old motor and tranny for $400, brings it down to $2700, and after selling the Dana 80 from my donor truck for $600, itll bring it down to about $2100. a little over two grand for a freakin awesome truck? im stoked. its been a fun weekend with the Fummins =) |
Well the cummins swap might be on hold for a while.... just bought a 2003 powerstroke.... I know its not a cummins.... but it really was the right truck at the right time!!!!!!!:choochoo:

Definitely, buying a donor vehicle is always better.
When I bought my '91 Dodge Cummins automatic 2WD donor truck, I had no idea how much the rear end was worth. I'm glad I found out before I scrapped it with the frame. The rear was a D70 with 3.07s, which you can't buy anywhere, you gotta find them used. I put it on craigslist and a guy drove all the way from PA to buy it and the starter that same day, for $650. I sold the 3 speed auto for $350, and had the rest of the truck sitting out by the road. I could hardly get work done on my Bronco with so many people stopping by for parts! When all was said and done, there was just a frame and shell of the cab left for the scrapper, and I made $1500 from selling the pieces, AND I got the Cummins for my truck. I only paid $1300 for it! So I got paid 200 dollars to take a 159k mile perfect running Cummins motor. It's pretty hard to beat that. |
