I'm curious to find out what it takes to get that nut off as well. I'll be swapping out my pulley eventually...

Hey guys, I'm new on the forum.
Anyway I was wondering how this project was coming along??? I'm considering of doing the same thing to my '94 Nissan pickup, as I blew the motor awhile back (bit of a long story). |
It is coming along slowly, I have the engine rebuilt now, but I keep getting side tracked by work and school. Also the truck I am planning on putting the engine into is currently my daily driver and due to its age, more pressing problems have a tendency to crop up. Hopefully soon I will be able to get some real work done on the project.
As far as the pulley goes, I was unable to get that nut off by any means, so I am banking on that forward gasket being good. If I had to, I would probably drill the nut and hope it was something I could replace with an off the shelf nut. If the nut wasn't replaceable, I suppose it would be possible to re-finish that part of the crank shaft on a lathe and put new threads on it. |

I do have another question. What transmission are you going to use? I'm trying to gather as much info as I can before I dive head first into this project. |
I was planning on using my stock transmission, the 5 speed manual, and making an adapter plate for it. This will limit my maximum speed to probably around 70 though. My plan was to see how the stock transmission and gearing worked, then adjust the gearing in the rear end and transfer case so I wouldn't have to find a new transmission. I might end up having to scrap the 4wd option to accommodate the engine anyway.

I do not know what is available for the Nissan as far as gearing for the differentials. But before going CRAZY lol. I would look into that first. As in if you can get Higher gears for the front and rear differentials then you are all set. Maybe not cheap set lol. But you can use your existing drive train.

Older Nissan??
I hate that I didn't join sooner and read this post. There were some older Nissan/Datsuns that came from the factory with diesels. They were non turbo but gave enough power to commute with, I think mine was about 85 or so hp, and 32 to 36 mpg. They came in 1981-1985 pickups and the cool part is Nissan continued to this engine in their forklifts and such until about 1996. I'm sure it would fit and would weigh about the same as the V-6. There was a special transmission for this engine as the starter was on the opposite side from the gas burners. Anyway, I'm glad to see you've got a project started and don't let the unavailability of parts get you down. Make what you need, it will be one of the best lessons an upcoming engineer can get.

Garagekeeper Ford made a diesel Ranger at one point, I don't think it ever made it to the US though. I don't recall what kind of horsepower those had though. |
Yeah, Ford had a diesel in the Ranger back in the early to mid 80s, we had quite a few here in the southeast, but I was looking at something newer and alot more advanced than than the old Mazda diesels that they offered back in the day, plus I have the whole donor car so the electronics won't be a major issue.
Are you still on track with your project? I'd like to get my hands on one of the take out Kubota engines, we haven't had the mandates from EPA cause many refer owners to convert yet on the east coast. |
