2nd Gen Down

So I am postin for my buddy Bullrider 96 cuz he says the internet no work in Mexico. Anyway he's got a 96 2nd gen and says its hard to start and will only rev to 2000 rpms. I told him it sounds like the lift pump but figured I'd ask you fellars for him too. He said it will start just not easy and doesn't run good at all. Any ideas are appreciated. :c:

ArizonaRedneck 05-09-2010 12:31 AM

he's actually in mexico what about fuel filter and like you said lift pump fuel filter first and maybe while he's down there a little fuel additive :humm:

12vcummins96 05-09-2010 12:34 AM

filter or pump

Nor_Cal_Angler 05-09-2010 12:40 AM

Is it posible for you to post more info about his truck....what are we working with here...symptoms are one thing but we need more about the truck...

any guages..big one being FP..if so whats it showing when truck is cranked and once its running.

how long ago did the filter (fuel) get changed

did he get bad fuel...

how old is the lift pump...

is it the stock lift pump or aftermarket...

could air be introduced from somewhere...fuel line crack or maybe fuel filter...

hows the voltage to the lift pump...

is the truck BOMBED???? different injectors/injectors fouled...

just need more to go on....the question is straight forward but the answer could be hard or easy depending on some background info.

He's not really in Mexico, just New Mexico. The truck is a 1996 12 valve, 3200 spring, stock lift pump, all gauges except fuel pressure, fuel plate adjusted for more power, 5 speed. I cant think of anything else, don't know when the fuel filter was changed last but i think he said it came on all the sudden. All the diesels I've driven and stopped up fuel filters Ive had, Ive never seen one make it hard to start so I doubt he's that lucky. I told him to try to check the fuel pressure. Im still bettin lift pump. Hopefully he will get back to civilization with internet, he can tell you more than I can. Thanks for the help

His truck info is in his sig found here in his "About Me" section

Ever changed your rubber fuel lines? Sounds like your losing prime.

Caposa homes. It sounds like you might be getting some air in the system maybe.

ArizonaRedneck 05-10-2010 09:31 PM

yep could be losing his prime and what about the good ole trusty fuel pressure gauge could help explain a little better :humm:

Like I was saying.....Air introduced....also...injector body cracked...leaking fuel (hard start symptom caused by this happening)...common on 3rd gen...not to sure about the rate that it happens to our trucks but I have heard it happening...possibily due to the age of the injector (s) or heavy fueling of the injector.

Hope it works out...

ya but everytime i start it when it sits long period of time it will do it not when its going just when it starts

jasonfriedlin 05-12-2010 08:45 PM

You've got air getting in somewhere homes. Check your fuel hoses coming from the tank and see if they are cracked.

exactly....your looseing your prime....after it sits fuel drains back and air fills the line...crank, crank, crank and your trying to start it with air....plug the hole, crank and BANG it fires up cuz now your starting it with fuel...Simple version

bullrider96 05-16-2010 02:18 PM

so where am i gettin air in at in the pump or the line

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

and plus if the lines were cracked wouldnt it be leakin fuel from somewhere?

You can be getting air from anywhere in the fuel system

The lines dry rot from the inside. They develop very small holes that let air in but dont let fuel out.

ding ding...I think we have a winner!!!:jump::jump:

Check the easiest and obvious areas first....connection at tank, then follow it up to the lift pump and check the inlet side of line connection, then check the oulet side of the lift pump...follow that to the fuel filter housing....check the inlet and outlet sides and the housing itself check the lid if it backed off....check the injection pump inlet from the fuel filter....lastly feel out the lines themselves. check for flat spots, chaffed areas, pinches, bends, feel for cracks (splintered areas) mushy areas...etc.
