99 f-350 or 450 shuttle bus help

Hey all I am new to this but I am trying to help out the band I am with on getting our shuttle bus up and running and i am no diesel mechanic but can work on them to a point its sounds to me like its sucking air in from some where but you can tell me what you think.

Ok i started it for the first time sense we had it (about three months) and the battery was weak so I put my optima in it and started rite up little chug to it but smoothed out. The person we bought it off of said a mechanic told him it needed all 8 injectors replaced and I don't know for sure if thats what it needs. But you start it and it would run for maybe 40 minutes at idle and then die. Well now I can't even start it. It tries to start but acts like its not getting any fuel but I can smell plenty. I think there is an air leak some where in the fuel delivery system but can't be sure where. Any Idea's what else it could be.

Thanks and yes I am new here

:humm: i think maybe it might be the injector wireing harness alot of guys have problems with them on the 7.3 strokers

thanks kirk

It may be your Crank Positioning Sensor

Diesel Nut 01-12-2009 02:27 PM

Ok. Do you have any ability to check and clear codes? If not, you can get a cost effective code reader at the auto parts store that will also clear the codes.

Oil level? Is it low? Are you getting oil pressure while cranking?

Feel free to give me a call to speed things up if you need.

caponkirk 01-12-2009 10:10 PM

i haven't checked the codes yet but i will be soon , oil level is good pressure is fine BUT the oil sending unit is bad and makes the guage flip all over the place a lot of times slow process don't have a lot of time to work on it rite now.

DB Admin 01-13-2009 09:00 AM

Hey Ford Guys do you think this is the Crank Positioning Sensor ?

Texas_Outlaw 01-13-2009 09:46 AM

possibly a cam sensor. What I have found on a lot of busses/350 cab & chassis and bigger is the fuel sending unit in the tank has 2 little cone filters inside the canister. These two filters usually clog up, lets the truck run fine for a little while then it will start to stumble, have low power, blue smoke with a strong smell of unburnt fuel and possible die with a hard start problem. Take the fuel filter out and look in the bottom of the filter housing. If there is any rust looking material in the bottom of the housing, I would start by draining/cleaning the tank, fuel lines and removing the cone filters in the canister and cleaning them as well. Get a scanner on it and let us know what codes you recieve. I never replace a cam sensor unless it has both codes present, a code for intermittent failure and an actual cam fault code. The intermittent code can be thrown just from the truck dying and it not being a cam sensor problem.
Update us when you can.

Also if you can get a scanner on it that will let you read ICP while cranking on it, that would help too. Hard to diagnose anything without a scanner anymore.

Thanks for the Info !!

caponkirk 01-13-2009 08:06 PM

you guys are more help than anyone else so far thanks I will be getting the code scanner soon to check it out and when i get the time take the fuel filters out and put new ones in im sure this shuttle bus needs lots of TLC so im gonna love it a lot

FYI most over the counter parts store scanners won't read the OBDII system that ford used on these trucks. i have an Auto X-Ray Code Scout that wouldn't read codes on my 99 f-250. i ended up using my friends Snap-On MODIS.

if you can get your hands on one of those or any other "shop" scanner like MAC or Matco etc. you can BUZZ test the injectors and it will know if they are stuck open or closed. also it will let you see the HPOP (High Pressure Oil Pump) pressure.

here is a how-to on injector and glow plug replacement. https://www.dieselbombers.com/powers...placement.html

follow the first few steps to check the harness and valve cover gaskets. you can get the valvecover gaskets for ~60 bux through Orileys Auto Parts and the harnesses you can get through Advance auto parts for ~30-35 IIRC.

IMHO if it was the CPS it would either crank or it wouldn't. the CPS was recalled and is a free replacement if you can get it to a ford dealership. call them with the VIN to find out if you qualify for the recall. here is the info on that https://www.dieselbombers.com/ford-p...call-7-3l.html

i hope this helps. PM me if you have some specific questions or post them up here. i got lucky and found the injectors for $100 a piece re-maned through Pensacola Diesel in Pensacola FL. they also sell the whole kit, injectors, glow plugs, valve cover gaskets, and injector harnesses for $989

hope this helps

DB Admin 01-14-2009 02:56 AM

when a buddies CPS went out his truck would run for 10 mins and die ,

Benjamin 01-14-2009 04:10 PM

ive seen that too.... also chance the oil and filter. fresh oil will help the injectors fire. the oil filter part number is Motocraft FL-1995

DB Admin 01-14-2009 06:00 PM

The Cam Sensor is $35 @ auto zone all you need is a 10MM to change it

DB Admin 01-14-2009 06:01 PM

FYI the cam sensor can be bad and not show any codes with a scanner

or he can get it to the dealer and get it all changed for free.... that's what i did.

when the van runs is it drivable?

trat1 01-15-2009 02:40 PM

yeah just never had it running long enough to drive it to a dealer.

Benjamin 01-15-2009 03:17 PM

i wander if you call the dealer and tell them the CPS failed on your van and you couldn't get it up there if they would cover the tow?

Diesel Nut 01-15-2009 11:09 PM

I doubt it. Ford is pretty stingy with that sort of stuff. Honestly, it would be cheaper to just buy one and install it than pay for the tow on an F450 sized truck.

Turbohunter 01-16-2009 05:10 PM

Like he said I think CPS as well

jnicewan 01-16-2009 11:39 PM

just replace the sensor then goto dealer, if its under recall and you can sweet talk the service dept. they might write it up and give you the part for a spare. if not just have them replace it and then request to keep your old part. at least where im at they will do this. and ford/parts do not call back old part, they go in the trash. p.s. you will need a spare in future. just put it and a wrench in the glove box.

caponkirk 01-17-2009 02:33 PM

Ok guys I am going to head to Auto zone soon and get the OBD-II scanner and see what i can get with it if it can't bring anything useful up i might just replace the cps and go from there. I just want it to run so I can take to my buddies shop and start fixing it. Like I have said before you guys are better than going to the dealer for answers atleast I get an honest one from everyone who has replied. And thanks for the INFO.
i will get back soon with my results.

DB Admin 01-17-2009 02:52 PM

Im coming down tonight , i can bring my scanner , Get a CPS if your going to autozone

caponkirk 01-18-2009 04:12 PM

k guys scanned the shuttle bus got a pass on codes went a head and bought the cps and going to install as soon as the weather lets up a little better.

DB Admin 01-18-2009 04:17 PM

Good Luck kirk :U:

wildbill 01-24-2009 01:12 PM

how goes it :pca1:

wildbill 01-31-2009 05:48 AM

Any luck yet??

Big Angry Hillbilly 01-31-2009 09:12 PM

Ford will reimburse you for a cam sensor and any necessary labour/diagnostic costs associated with the repair if you need to replace it at another facility, or it was replaced before the recall came out.

caponkirk 03-09-2009 02:52 AM

ok well update so far new cps white smoke if it does start sounds like a two cyl diesel in the winter trying to run and then dies and killed my bats so need to charge them back up and get it to flash lights so i can take it to a shop to check it out. But on the other hand i finally got the part in lol wasnt very fun to get to ended up pulling the belt off and barely getting my hand up in there to get to the part even though its only one bolt damn is it hard to get to laying on the ground but thanks again on all of you who have helped me out.:U:

wildbill 03-11-2009 05:55 PM

Let us know what the shop finds out.

wildbill 03-14-2009 11:44 PM

Update please.

caponkirk 03-17-2009 02:31 AM

well the bus is still being looked at rite at this moment and seems to be looking twards the injector wiring harness rite now but he said should know whats wrong by next week and what all needs to be fixed

Benjamin 03-17-2009 08:20 PM

if it ends up being the valvecover gaskets i have 2 that are used in good condition... pay shipping. i pulled them off my 99 stroke and replaced them because i thought that was the problem.... new ones are 60 bux EACH. if it ends up being the under valve cover harness buy them from Advance autoparts or orileys as i want to say they are like 35 bux a piece.

caponkirk 03-19-2009 12:28 PM

wel we found out that it has two push rods broke one lifter bad and maybe have a broken cam so going to check it out this sat to see what all we need starting to move on it finally but still a little slow

caponkirk 03-22-2009 07:45 PM

well i got the head off on the driver side and found out that after the two front push rods got bent pretty bad they :edit: up the lifters and pulled the lifters out very front one was flat on the roller so now need a cam and not sure what else its going to need now but probably have to pull the engine out and its no fun seeing how its in a van/bus so if any one happens to know where i can get a 7.3 cheap would be great or parts for it for next to nothing lol.

DB Admin 03-22-2009 07:47 PM

:argh: Put a Cummins in it :U:

wildbill 03-25-2009 05:12 AM

Update please

caponkirk 03-26-2009 10:20 AM

well i haven't been able to get back out to the bus yet but as far as i know we still need a cam shaft new lifters injector harness for both sides just to be safe and probably a new mechanic cause i hate working on any kind of van lol but hopefully soon with in the month we will have it back up and running.

wildbill 03-28-2009 09:39 AM

Any updates??

caponkirk 03-31-2009 05:35 PM

still need to pull the other head off to see what else it might need but going out this thursday to pull the other head off
