Check Engine Light On

hey guys new to the forum i have a 2000 chevy 3500 dually with a turbo diesel <sorry dont know what motor it is >but a couple days ago my check engine light came on and then my truck got supper lazy and im not sure what to do is there a way to take the codes out to see what it has without a scanner? i stopped driving it so i dont mess it up more but i need my truck asap what do you guys recommend thanks in advance by the way im in los angeles ca

wildbill 09-12-2008 01:45 AM

Can have Checker, Autozone, Napa, or O'Reilleys hook up a scanner and decipher the codes.

BTW, welcome to DB!!!

oak1now 09-12-2008 02:00 AM

do the regular scanners work on diesel cars as well?

stkdram55 09-12-2008 02:43 AM

as long as it is OBD II they should and your truck being a 2000 it is OBDII, just take it to a parts store and have em read the codes for ya and see what it says:humm:

Redpatcher0481 09-12-2008 04:20 AM

:howdy:Welcome

Yeah just take it to a auto parts store they should check it for you.

bigdaddydiesel 09-12-2008 05:11 AM

WELCOME !!!! And Good Luck with your issue!!!!:U::pca1:

Oilfield_Mafia 09-12-2008 07:24 AM

First off, :hi: Welcome!

As for your codes, just like WildBill said, most of the parts stores will check them for you. Once you have the codes, you can find out what the isue is pretty easily. Dont forget we have a code checker right here https://www.dieselbombers.com/codes.php

oak1now 09-12-2008 10:28 AM

you guys rock!!!! thanks

Dr. Evil 09-12-2008 11:04 AM

Should be a 6.5L if memory serves. Good luck - make sure you let us know what you find.

2500HeavyDuty 09-12-2008 11:15 AM

Welcome to DB :hi:

Johnny Cetane 09-17-2008 09:03 AM

Nitelord 09-17-2008 10:31 AM

:hi:

oak1now 09-20-2008 11:24 PM

yeah the parts stores dont scan the cars anymore so i had a buddy of mine take it to a friend and this is what he gave me
p0236
p0237
p0238

all i can tell its a turbo boost sensor issue. does this mean its just a bad sensor? where would i find this sensor ? how much it cost ?thanks guys.

oak1now 09-22-2008 03:24 AM

i hope that helps a bit

wildbill 09-23-2008 08:06 AM

Anything done to your truck, as far as performance wise?

oak1now 09-23-2008 11:12 AM

no nothing done to it its all stock but the truck got sluggish from one day to another. should i just get a new sensor or is it the voltage ?

Oilfield_Mafia 09-23-2008 11:26 AM

You might disconnect the sensors, clean the connections real good, and hook them back up and try it again. I will see what other information I can find on this..

Dr. Evil 09-23-2008 11:26 AM

Im not familiar with Chebbys at all but Ill take a stab at it. Its likely something with your wastegate on the turbo (assuming you have a wastegate) or maybe the turbo itself (which would explain the sluggishness).

Oilfield_Mafia 09-23-2008 11:32 AM

Check for vacuum at the wastegate. If there is no vacuum then you have a bad vacuum pump, bad wastegate solenoid, or cracked/broken vacuum lines. You need to measure the pressure of your vacuum system. This is the line that leads from your vacuum pump to the turbo. Chances are the Turbo Solenoid is bad but it can be the vacuum that is bad. If the vacuum is bad, then it is a good TurboMaster candidate. If not, then it is up to you to just change the solenoid.

bigdaddydiesel 09-23-2008 11:37 AM

could dryrott in the vacuum lines cause this?:humm:

Just curious...:pca1:

lol yea

:tttt:

oak1now 09-23-2008 09:43 PM

how would i know if i have dryrott? and how would i identify if i have a wastegate. how much pressure should i have on my vacuum system? turbo master candidate ? sorry for the stupid questions i just dont know much about turbos thanks

If the little rubber vacuum lines are dry or rotten, you have dryrot. just visually inspect the lines..

and how would i identify if i have a wastegate.

You have a wastegate.. its there its the small gold bladder housing on the side of the turbo with a vacuum line going to it.

how much pressure should i have on my vacuum system?

Pick up a vacuum gauge from the local parts store and just check to see if there is ANY vacuum at all on the line. I think it should carry between 3-5 psi.

turbo master candidate ?

Turbo-Master Boost Enhancer 92-95

sorry for the stupid questions i just dont know much about turbos thanks

Always remember, there are no stupid questions... only stupid answers.. You cant learn if you dont ask right?

Hope that helps you some :U:

*edit* -

I noticed your signature isnt filled out.. you truck is a 6.5L correct? All of the information I stated is for the 6.5L TD.. But If I remember correctly, 2000 was a split year, and its possible it could be an LB7 Duramax 6.6 L depending on the manufacture date..

oak1now 09-23-2008 10:55 PM

can you tell me what motor is in what manufacture date that way i can identify what i have thanks

2500HeavyDuty 09-23-2008 11:20 PM

nope 01 was first dmax

Oilfield_Mafia 09-24-2008 07:23 AM

OK, Thanks for the heads up Danny, I thought it was, but i guess I had a brain fart..

oak, that means that you have the 6.5L TD. So just look over all of your vacuum lines that come off the wastegate, and everything back to the vacuum pump. just a visual.. with it going in and out, it could be any of those things. The Possibly dry rot vacuum lines, bad solenoid, bad wastegate or bad vacuum pump..

Let us know what you find bud!:pca1:

oak1now 09-25-2008 11:14 AM

should i be driving it like this? how do i test the solenoid ? wastegate ? and i have to get a vacuum pump tester

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

oh also will the turbo-master boost enhancer work on my truck ?

MRaynor 09-28-2008 03:02 PM

Anyone.... :humm:

busta 09-28-2008 03:21 PM

i had the p0237 on my cummins i changed boots since they were stock and i probably had a leak and cleared the code and its outta limp mode
