I have a 98 12 v cumin 4x4 I'm getting a lot of blow by out of oil cap an dipstick tube along with vent tube. I'm new to diesels so I really don't know what is causing this. Number 3 injector was leaking. I'm only getting 6 to 8 miles a gal. Would motor b shot or could it b saved

How was it determined that the number three injector is leaking? on a bench test? is it flooding the cylinder? or do you mean that it is leaking at the line connection?
If its leaking internally it might have washed the cylinder down and it might have scored the cylinder or melted a piston causing blow by.
A compression test would show whats going on.

got any video or camera shots of the blow by?
are you seeing any oil smoke out of the exhaust?

The injector was leaking interially. I pulled the injectors out an number 3 an 4 was wet 3 was worse. I don't have any pics of smoke. I broke a ban in tranny so I had to pull it. To get it fixed. But I drove the truck for a while after it started the blow by an just kept getting worse. So after the blow by got worse the rear main started leaking bad an other gaskets so I pulled motor to reseal it but I don't know if it would be worth it now . Now I can't do a compressor test. They r whitish blue like smoke. I have to drive it for a few miles before I get any black smoke out of it.

While its out maybe you could find someone with a bore scope and take a look at the cylinders or pull the head. It doesn't sound good at this point excesive crank case pressure and blue smoke not good. how many miles do you think its been driven with the smoke?

I'd say around 3 or 4000 miles. This is my first diesel an this is a learning experience for me. Thanks for info

Here is a good way to know if your engines blow by is excessive. doesn't really help with the engine sitting on the stand though.

Thanks for u r info. I'm getting ready to pull the head since motor is out . Hopefully that will tell me something . I've been a gas mechanic for years was talked into this diesel. Don't know if I made the right decision but I do really like the truck . It pulls an hauls nice no problem with that. Best truck I had for towing for the torque. I just don't know what to do with it because funds r limited right now since the olé lady is laid off these diesel not cheap. Might just have to ship it down the road. But I really appreciate u r advice

The parts are kinda expensive but the longevity you get out of a diesel far exceeds that of a gas engine. It's hard to see the end of the tunnel with a trans band messed up and engine possibly needing a sleeve or bored. It sucks that the first diesel you owned had to have this much work but if you do fix it up there is a great resale value in the second gen P7100 powered truck.
The 98 is actually pretty sought after because of the P7100 injection pump is so bad ass. Lots of mods available, fuel plate,governor springs, injectors are inexpensive compared to common rail.
Once the engine is fixed and everything "dialed in" the truck will run for a long long time.
but you know best about your situation and if you do want to sell the ole beast there is a For sale thread in the forum.

I'm going to get head off an go from there. I hate to get rid of it. Because train is new it has less the 8000 miles on the rebuild. Don't know why band broke but I got it fix now. So motor now is the only issue with truck .

I would suggest running those injectors down to the local diesel shop and have them pop checked/leak checked. That should put to rest any leaking injector problems and only cost about 50 bucks to check them. If they are bad you can get them repaired with new nozzles or change them out bodies and nozzles.
