How do Duramax compare to Cummins and Powerstoke ?
I'm new to this whole diesel seen....... What years are the best years for Duramax ? How durable are Duramax and how long do they last ( like how many miles on average before they need a rebuild ) ? How do they match up against Cummins and Powerstrokes ?
|
Lots of threads that cover this. It all really comes down to what you want out of your truck. LBZs IMO are the best those are the 06 and early 07s. Other then leaking Trans lines they have no real issues. I think for a stock truck Dmax wins several guys have gone over 500K with little to no problems.

Thanks !

Ya, what Dozerboy said. '06-07 is the most trouble free and pre-ultra-mega-emissons-crap.
If you treat it right, you'll never have to rebuild it. I have 3 LB7 Duramax's ('01-'03) with over 200k on the odo and the engine, tranny and diffs are all origional. :c: All brands have their pluses and minuses. With the 7 Duamaxes in my fleet, non have ever had any major work done to them. On the same hand, I do have one '02 7.3l Powerstroke in my fleet with 270k without any problems either. Just do your research and go drive a few to get a feel for them. :c: |
Drive them all buy the one you like, I would recommend getting one before the DPF became part of the package.

What it comes down to is personal preference, some like Ford , Dodge or Chevrolet, for me it's Chevrolet. Albeit I will admit Ford makes the best interior of any truck (King Ranch especially).
|
I like them all and this time went with the Duramax. Fords at work ride to rough for my taste and didnt find a CR cummins like I wanted. My truck has 270 on it with factory everything. Its all about how they are taken care of that makes a truck.

LBZ DURAMAX ALL THE WAY I HAD A 02 LB7 VERY GOOD MOTOR BUT INJECTOR PROBLEMS BUT I WAS STOLEN SO MY BROTHER INLAW TALKED ME INTO A F-350 IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL TRUCK BUT RODE LIKE SH*T AND ALWAYS BROKE DOWN I HAD IT FOR 8 MONTHS AND TRAIDED IT IN ON A 05 CUMMINS 4X4 A GREAT TRUCK I LOVE IT BUT I MISS EVERYTHING ABOUT THE DURAMAX SO THE DODGE IS UP FOR SALE MY NEXT TRUCK WILL BE A LBZ :tu:

gmc FTW!
|
it doesn't compare, it dominates the PSD and dodge.

Keep in mind here guys that he was asking about the engine, not the truck in general. The 5.9 Cummins is the time tested king of the diesels. The Duramax runs a close second. I wouldn't even look at a Ford diesel. Although I am disappointed with some aspects of my Dodge, and Ford appears to make a great truck. The Cummins is rated to go an extra 100,000 miles before a rebuild compared to a DMax or PStroke. Facts are facts. Also, keep in mind lots of people put a Cummins into their Ford or Chevy, but noone ever takes out a Cummins and puts in one of the other two. There is good reason for that.
|
yah, people dont like dodges :D
|
I think it 's a tough question . My first diesel was a 06dmax luv it, it is fast and will pull the doors off a barn .Now i have the fever, but it is not cheap with newer trucks. so i just added a 98 dodge 12v to my small diesel collection and i luv that truck and if i had to give one of them up i don't know wich i would choose. try to find what fits u
|
Ther all pretty equal really. They can all last 500k without a rebuild if you treat it right. I know your askin about which motor is best, but IMO its the truck around it that makes a difference because they are all great motors.
|
7.3's require the least amount of maintenance imo, you never have to tear into the engine to adjust the lash since they got hydraulic lifters
|
7.3'S ARE GOOD I HAD THE 6.0 P.O.S. I HAD MORE PROBLEMS IN THE 8 MONTHS I HAD IT. FORD IS SOLID TRUCK IF IT HAD A CUMMINS IN IT I WOULD HAVE ANOTHER ONE
|
The 6.0 isnt a pos. I own one and its treating me just fine. Im sorry that you got a lemon, but that happens with all makes.
|
ive had all three the lmm duramax i just bought IMO is my fav im still learing about mods ECT but take all three for test drives and see what you thing 1thing to rember be carefull with the 09 dmax cause the trany lines are wide open and i already tore one off hunting.

If we could just get a truck with the Cummins 12 V, bombed to about 400/1200, pushing an Allison to Dana straight axles, in a Ford body with GM suspension and ride, and with the GM dealership network, it would be close to the perfect truck. Able to pull almost anything on wheels, run over 300K miles, get 20+ mpg, perform as good as it looks - awesome!
Alas, the only way to do that is to build it on your own. My brother has the Duramax. It has been in the shop multiple times for big ticket items like the transmission, axles, and engine controls. It struggles with a toy hauler set up for his motocross circut. I have a 95 12V Dodge, the engine is mint and pulls like a mother, but the body is falling apart around it. My kiddo has a 7.3 PSD, w/lift, tuner, etc., and it did well, except for the ride and transmission slipping. The kiddo's boss has a CRD 6.7, which looks and drives great, but at half the power of my 12V and his mileage sucks. He's already had to deal with electrical and transmission problems. They all work and they all have flaws. No perfect trucks in this world... :dang: |
There is one perfect truck! THE ONE YOU BUY AND TAKE GOOD CARE OF. If you mod the crap out of it do not expect it to last. Ford, Chevy and Dodge all have good engineering and are built for a specific application. If it has been moded. It is not there fault it failed. You mod it you engineered it, you live with the result don't blame them. Im not bashing mods but. They do not engineer there parts to go with the other parts you have installed. Not there fault they are making a product for a specific application not all applications. You can tell by the post and sigs who breaks and who mods they normally go together.

Looks like this old thread is being reincarnated and given new life.
I researched my first diesel purchase for months before I finally decided on my 07 LMM Duramax. I've had it for a little over a year now and I still love it. |
Good Choice...:tu:
