Advice Needed

Well I am heading off to college this fall and I want a Duramax. But I can't afford one just yet.I could possibly get a 6.5L but I don't know if I really want one of those.I am going into Diesel Technology (Ag) then Truck Diesel if possible. But I am wondering how did you guys get your Duramaxes paid for? This will be my 1st truck so I have nothing to trade in for a Duramax.Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

Ben, when i bought my first truck (you know the story) I had some credit but not a lot and that helped me out quite a bit. What i would do if i were you is look around at alot of used trucks and even if you find one that has over 100,000 miles but its in your price range, take a serious look at it and drive it and crunch some numbers and talk to the bank that you wich to get a loan thru. Yea loans arent the best thing when you are in school but it builds your credit and in the end I found a way to make a $750 dollar payment while being a senior in high school, yea it was really tough at times but it got easiler once i figured out a system to use. Just look around and find a Duramax that is in your price range, you cant be picky and not look at one because you dont like the color or something. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

My first diesel was a 6.5 2500. sweetest thing. rode nice, not noisy. keep it clean . and it was a great partner.......until i put gas in it..:w2: one night at 1 am. this guy approched me at the gas station and the diesel and gas where on the same pump, so yea i accidently put the wrong hose in there, put in 75.00 worth of gas. and drove about 5 kms. and it slowly died..then i realized what i did, after that, thats how i became a member of the diesel place all the guys helped me out so much. Except after i got the gas out, the head gaskets dried out cause i never added lubricant to the diesel. and ended up blowing my gaskets....... and spending 7500.00 on a new top end that these mechanics @$#^ me over with.......a new crate moter would have been 6500.00 but whatever water under the bridge, so yea a 6.5 is a great starter just dont put gas in it.. the moters are completly different though,, this new one. is so confussing, i was just getting used to my old one. then i crashed it, and i got it fixed up and sold it for 7500. paid for the motor.......this one is nice but a little rougher then my old one. but hwy ride is sweet, and the power knocks my socks off..love it......so yea thats my story..

DuramaxBen 05-30-2008 12:44 PM

Yeah I'll wait till next summer then try and get one.By then I will have enough for a downpayment.

E2theRock2 05-30-2008 12:48 PM

Honestly if i were you Ben i would trade the Regal and the S10 in. I know you dont think that you are gonna get anything for them, but you have to look at it this way: its better than not having anything at all like me.

DuramaxBen 05-30-2008 02:22 PM

Well the Regal I will keep due to the milage it gets.It gets 30mpg hwy.But as of lately it has been overheating.Boiling the Antifreeze is what its doing.

BLACK_06POWERSTROKE 05-30-2008 04:50 PM

check your thermostat^^ and coolant level

DuramaxBen 05-30-2008 05:51 PM

Coolant was low due to the radiator cap poping off.But I found it and placed it back on filled up the resevoire and drove it only once and it seemed to be ok.But I haven't been driving it as of lately.

biged681985 05-30-2008 09:53 PM

if i was you ben i would trade one in, even if they only gave you a 1000 for trade in. and keep the other incase you breake something and cant get it fixed right away.

E2theRock2 05-31-2008 08:05 AM

Yep tradin one in will give ya that little extra cash and every little bit helps, do everything you can to make it easier to make payments on your truck. Take advice from me man I'm well expirenced in buying cars, get together as much money as you can before walking on to a dealer lot and getting serious. Let me know if you have any questions.

xzaq103 05-31-2008 09:56 AM

Plus diesel trucks are CHEAP right now

TCU Fan 05-31-2008 09:56 AM

If you need to build credit get a credit card with a low limit high interest rate and pay the balance off every month, do that for 6 months then go apply for truck credit.

The worse thing to do is buy more then you can afford.

dozerboy 05-31-2008 02:22 PM

If you do that make sure you have a $0 balance on the card having a balance on the card will drop your credit rating.

DuramaxBen 05-31-2008 02:44 PM

Yes Well I am keeping the Regal.I love that car.Dad wants to keep the S10 for himself now just because diesel is more expensive than gas right now.So I would only be able to trade the Regal and I really don't want to if I don't have to.

E2theRock2 06-01-2008 08:06 AM

Thats fine just work hard and save your money and you will get your Duramax.

bow2no1 06-01-2008 08:17 AM

hate to say it but i started of with a 86 mazda b2000 2wd. just worked my way up.
buy cheap do a little work and resell for a profit or try to at least break even.

starting right off with a older dmax still isn't cheap. i havn't looked at any used dmax but i would guess a older one still around 20G.

i havn't hear much good about the 6.5s... if your bound to stay with GM??
i would go with a 6.2 and you can turbo them easy.
you can get a really nice 6.2 for 5g or less easy!
also the 6.2's are solid front axle 10 bolt or dana 60

DuramaxBen 06-01-2008 09:02 AM

Well I really don't care about the axles.I won't be doing much towing anyway. This would strictly be a work truck to haul and occasional load.

E2theRock2 06-01-2008 09:26 AM

If you arent doing much towing then axles wont really matter all you will need is to have the truck get you from point A to point B. The 6.5s are good trucks but they do have so heating issues, and if you are willing to put some money into them they will run great.

DuramaxBen 06-01-2008 09:39 AM

Well I wouldn't put alot into it just enough so I can get higher resale value and get rid of it in 2yrs.It's just a truck to get me by.Although I would prefer it to have a 12v Cummins instead of the Detroit Diesel.

Then you'll just have to build one. :)

E2theRock2 06-01-2008 10:05 AM

I would sell you my 12v if i didnt love it so much. I took it out last night on a cruise with my buddies and this kid that nobody likes decided to mess with me (not a good idea) and i left him in a huge cloud of smoke and then at the next light i rolled down the window and asked him if he wanted to race for pinks. He pussed out.

DuramaxBen 06-01-2008 11:04 AM

Yeah the Big Bad 12v scores another victem.Well I would love a 12v Cummins just to place in the truck instead of the 6.5L Detroit.

E2theRock2 06-01-2008 11:21 AM

I put 6 inch miters on it too not too long ago so whenever i get going all there is, is a trail of black following me hahahaha. I have know a kid around here that has a 6.5 and he drives that truck like its stolen all the time. He doesnt seem to have many problems and seeing that it is straight piped it sounds pretty bad ass too.

DuramaxBen 06-01-2008 11:23 AM

That is awesome. You sure know alot about customization.A straight piped 6.5L would sound pretty cool.

E2theRock2 06-01-2008 11:33 AM

Yea i have always been into putting aftermarket stuff on my trucks to keep them singled out from the croud. The 6.5s sound really ballzie when straight piped, they still arent very loud like my Cummins but when you are standin not too far from them and they roll by you can definalty hear it grumble.

BLACK_06POWERSTROKE 06-01-2008 11:59 AM

yep thats what its all about making it stand out and i cant stand it when you start customizing you r truck with wheels, tires, lift, etc., etc., and some ass wad copyies off what you have already done to your truck it drives me crazy.

DuramaxBen 06-01-2008 12:09 PM

Well then you just go one step more.I'm not much of a cutomizing person though.

yuo will be all it takes is one addition then you will get bit by the bug and you will always want more. my girlfriend asks me all the time if i will ever be "DONE" working on my trucks and fixing them up and i tell her not to hold her breathe. the way i look at it is if a man cant dream and want more what does he have to live for????????

You hit that right on the head.

E2theRock2 06-01-2008 02:44 PM

I like to walk out into a parking lot and know exactly where my truck is just by glancing around. I remember when i got my first set of wheels for my Duramax, they were Helos and no joke a month later some tool but them on his duramax too so i got new wheels after that and so far nobody in town has copied me.

DuramaxBen 06-01-2008 03:13 PM

Yep that is what always happens.Me I just want truck cab lights for mine and maybe a few stickers. Also crome exhaust.

BLACK_06POWERSTROKE 06-01-2008 03:16 PM

just a little pointer use stainless not chrome it is a little more expensive but it lasts a lot longer and is a lot less maintenace. :U:

DuramaxBen 06-01-2008 03:21 PM

Really Stainless outlasts chrome?I didn't know that.

dozerboy 06-01-2008 03:29 PM

I wouldn't buy anything now just to sell it in 2 years and you can easily fine Dmaxs for under 20K.

Chrome will pit and rust underneath stainless scratches easy which can be buffed out and cost a more.

DuramaxBen 06-01-2008 03:30 PM

Yeah now I am leaning more towards No to the 6.5L.Even though it is tempting the Duramax is what I really want.

are u being serious right here ben???

E2theRock2 06-02-2008 07:58 AM

Ben i can just see it now when you get your Duramax you are gonna get the cab lights and then a couple stickers and then the exhaust and then you are gonna get bit by the bug (it always happens) and then you are gonna get wheels and then tint the windows and then a chip and then a intake and then a turbo and you will always find something more to add to your truck and no its not a bad thing, its a good thing. Thats how i wass with my 12v all i wanted on it at first was and intake and exhaust for better mileage and it got out of control and i had a ton of upgrades done to it. Thats just how it is.

DuramaxBen 06-02-2008 12:02 PM

Yes well E2 we shall see.I have to get it first. But Truck cab lights are a must for me.I just like the look of them on top of the truck.A chip yeah I'll probably get one of those but as for the rest I don't know.

E2theRock2 06-02-2008 12:31 PM

You'll get the bug lol its not a bad thing at all
