Did My Good Deed for the Day!
A guy limped into the dealer today with his 04 D-max pooring out black smoke with his loaded toyhauler in tow. Were getting 2 faults, egr and maf sensor. Put a maf sensor on it and still blows smoke. Hooked up the scan tool and it says the boost is 14psi, period. It appears the truck is starving for air. We adjust the vanes on turbo, no change. It's sounding like a bad turbo. Anybody got any thoughts?
Oh! Forgot to mention! Towed his trailer to the camp ground for him so his vacation wasn't completely ruined. Got a 30 pack of cold ones! :c: |
Did you guys check the boost sensor? It's the one with the white or light grey wire directly under the resonator. Do you have access to a Tech II? BTW- it must have been an 04.5 because 04 and earlier didnt have the VVT's which just made me realize that this section of the forum is labeled wrong.

We've checked it. I'll have him double check it.

Air filter and intake?

i WOISH i COULD HELP BUT ANYTHING WITH MORE THAN 6 CYLINDERS SCARES ME. BUT COULD THERE BE SOMETHING IN THE EXHAUST CLOGGING IT UP? I THINK THE DMAXES HAVE CATS AND ALL KIDS OF STUFF DONT THEY? MAYBE THE AIR GOING OUT IS BLOCKED?

We disconnected the exhaust.

bad turbo is my guess.
You say the turbo is variable geometry? Viens are sticking sounds like. |
On the fords, you can clean the turbo and lubricate those viens with a powder graphite and that will take care of it alot of times.
If there is excess rust present, its trash. |
I'd bet on it being a tired turbo.
