Did My Good Deed for the Day!

A guy limped into the dealer today with his 04 D-max pooring out black smoke with his loaded toyhauler in tow. Were getting 2 faults, egr and maf sensor. Put a maf sensor on it and still blows smoke. Hooked up the scan tool and it says the boost is 14psi, period. It appears the truck is starving for air. We adjust the vanes on turbo, no change. It's sounding like a bad turbo. Anybody got any thoughts?

Oh! Forgot to mention! Towed his trailer to the camp ground for him so his vacation wasn't completely ruined. Got a 30 pack of cold ones! :c:

Did you guys check the boost sensor? It's the one with the white or light grey wire directly under the resonator. Do you have access to a Tech II? BTW- it must have been an 04.5 because 04 and earlier didnt have the VVT's which just made me realize that this section of the forum is labeled wrong.

Buckshotmckee 07-10-2007 09:32 PM

We've checked it. I'll have him double check it.

All clean and clear.

i WOISH i COULD HELP BUT ANYTHING WITH MORE THAN 6 CYLINDERS SCARES ME. BUT COULD THERE BE SOMETHING IN THE EXHAUST CLOGGING IT UP? I THINK THE DMAXES HAVE CATS AND ALL KIDS OF STUFF DONT THEY? MAYBE THE AIR GOING OUT IS BLOCKED?

Buckshotmckee 07-11-2007 08:07 AM

We disconnected the exhaust.

CHenry 07-11-2007 09:24 AM

bad turbo is my guess.
You say the turbo is variable geometry? Viens are sticking sounds like.

CHenry 07-11-2007 09:29 AM

On the fords, you can clean the turbo and lubricate those viens with a powder graphite and that will take care of it alot of times.
If there is excess rust present, its trash.

redneckbuckeye 07-11-2007 03:29 PM

I'd bet on it being a tired turbo.

DangerousDuramax 07-11-2007 05:47 PM

If its an 04 then it doesnt have variable vanes. This truck has to be an 04.5 or 05. Before you can do anything to this truck you are going to need a Tech II, otherwise your just going to spin your wheels. If you can get your hands on a Tech II, run the truck down the road and data log it. Email me the file and I'll take a look at what the ECM is commanding for vane position and boost.

I moved this thread because it was in the wrong section. All VVT Dmax's are 04.5 and up. Pre-04.5 is the LB7 non-VVT.

Got it fixed guys! Thanks! It was the freaking EGR valve! Replaced the valve and everything started working. It listed as an 04 with an LLY in it. :s:

good to know. thanks for putting up the fix, buckshot.

I assumed you replaced that along with the maf sensor. I thought that is why we were playing the guessing game. Sounds like the codes told you what was wrong right away...

Blocking those things is going to be something that most will/should want to do to avoid problems down the road.
