low oil pressure!

Ok withe thew great help from Crazy I finally got my starting and stalling problem fixed but now I have no oil pressure. I changed the OPS and now today I was heading out of town ans thwe oil pressure slowly dropped to allmost zero or the red. Whwn ideling the check gauges lie came on but a shot of fuel and it went out. I'm heading back home in an hour or so and hope I make it back. Any ideas, ill pic up a oil pressue gauge and a T and see if I have pressure from amechanical gauge I guess mie even pic up a code reader :scare2:

Crazy 01-05-2011 11:56 AM

First thing make sure you have oil in the motor sure you did that and check make sure oil cooler line didn't let go there good for it

you need to get some kind after market gauge to see for sure i wouldn't be driving intill you know what going on could be bad OPS not reading right could be bad oil filter i just had that happen to me few weeks ago i had oil pressure at idle but had good pressure going down the road other thing check is all grounds make there clean and tight

Mapleleafpete 01-05-2011 02:41 PM

Thers lot of oil I just changed it and filter. The oil cooling lines were disconnected by the last owner, don't no why tho. Ill try the obvious 1st, the oil filter then move to the OPS its new but could be bad. What about the oil filter base, iset there a valve in it that can stick open and let the oil free flow without building up pressure. I was out of town and stop at canadian tire to get a mechanical gauge but they had none and was gonna get a code reader but they wanted 300 bucks. Want one tat does more than reads codes but not 300 bucks lol:td:i

Crazy 01-05-2011 02:52 PM

first was it ACDelco OPS if not it could have gone bad seen it many times

i have seen oil filter go bad

for code reader go to obd2 scan tool data log and diagnostics scanner for lap top

bjennen 01-05-2011 03:43 PM

Where is the best place to hook up the mechanical oil guage

Crazy 01-05-2011 03:47 PM

right where OPS is at just get brass fitting long enough with T and put OPS one side and gauge on the other side

bjennen 01-05-2011 03:56 PM

I don't mean to sound stupid, OPS? And where is it located at?? Again thanks Crazy

Crazy 01-05-2011 04:06 PM

OPS oil pressure switch and should be on of the head driver side rear on the inside head

bjennen 01-05-2011 04:08 PM

is it a pain to get to?

Crazy 01-05-2011 04:25 PM

it can be depending how big your hand are

bjennen 01-05-2011 04:36 PM

I'll be taking everything apart this weekend to put the turbo master on and modify my upper intake so it will probably be a good time to do that too since i have everything off and i can put the t on for the ops and the mechanincal guage. Do you happen to know what thread that is, is it a regular 1/8 pipe thread:tu:

Mapleleafpete 01-05-2011 05:04 PM

I put a after market OPS on but its working cause I can hear the pump turn on and off. I just changed the oil filyer again but will have to take it for a spin to gey the oil warmed up . It has oil pressure now but as soon as its warmed up it drops so ill try a ride tomorrow. Bjen take the 2 bolts off the fuel filter bracket so you can move the wieing harness and fule filter cartridge out of the way that will give you enuff room to get at the OPS. You'll need a 27mm socket to get it off.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

And don't be shy bjen to ask for a video, I can whip one up on youtube in a flash right from my phone. Crazy showed me a few things and I poted vids to help out ppl, carazys the brains and I'm the messenger lol :tu:

Crazy 01-05-2011 05:52 PM

Mrjohndeere remember just because you can here the LP does always mean it working just let you know

you said when engine cold you oil pressure what is it ready then what it go to when it warm up

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

oh ya that OPS could be you problem it a after market you want a ACDelco

Mapleleafpete 01-06-2011 06:57 AM

Im 100% sure the pump is working,i tested it by jumping it again. the oil pressure when cold go's to allmost half way on the gauge.Ater acout driveing 5 miles it drop slowly to close to zero and when i pulled over and parked it went to zero.I drove back home,a 35 mile ride and it stayed close to zero all the way.Last nite i changed the oil filter and now ill try it out this morning to see how it go,s.

Crazy 01-06-2011 07:59 AM

I drove back home,a 35 mile ride and it stayed close to zero all the way
i have say if you drove that far on zero pressure i would have think the would have blown up so going say OPS is on pressure side or filter

bjennen 01-06-2011 08:07 AM

What do you mean filter, just the regular oil filter you put on, that can make you have low pressure? Or just a wrong reading?

Mapleleafpete 01-06-2011 08:37 AM

What he's saying Bjen is that an oil filter can be faulty, they can collapse inside or just plain be no good and not regester oil pressure.Crazy i changed the oil filter this morning and went for a ride.Yesyerday i actually did 70 miles like this drove to Cochrane 35 miles and drove back with no oil pressure.Ill add this video i made this morning and you can see allmost no oil presssure,a little bit when i floor the truck, heres the video.

Crazy 01-06-2011 09:28 AM

now is that video after or before changing filter and if after change filter i would get after market gauge on there for test before blow motor up or a turbo

how many miles do have on the truck

Mapleleafpete 01-06-2011 11:29 AM

This is after i changed the oil filter. The truck has 270,000 klm or 167,770 miles not much for these truck as you no. The oil pressure has never really been that great since ive owned it,never really made it to the half way mark on the gauge hot or cold.

Crazy 01-06-2011 11:47 AM

? for what wgt oil are you using

oil pressure should be around

50 to 60 psi cold idle

20 to 30 psi warm idle

35 to 45 psi driving

maybe oil pumps on it way out

like said early on in post need try replace OPS or get after market gauge on it to see what happens these motors need oil pressure for turbo also

bjennen 01-06-2011 12:10 PM

Well mines lower than that. great one more thing to fix. is oil pump hard to replace

Mapleleafpete 01-06-2011 01:04 PM

Im using a 50 50 blend, lol.I use 15/40 semi synthetic and 0/30 full synthetic half of each.Where i live it does get down to -50 degrees and i should be running full 0/30 syn but the truck spends its life in a heated garage so really no need for full 0/30 in my opion.
Bjen i think all these trucks have crappy oil pressure via the stock oil gauge,i own 3 chevys 2 are diesels but both have crappy oil pressure.I just took a video of a cold star, its -2 f here right now -18 with the wind and you'll see that the oil pressure still isent that great.will post in a few min, gotta go get some Coke at the store, all this thinking is making me thirsty, lol.Oh i do other comedy videos also ill post one now for your viewing pleasure, its just me doing stupid skits im my garage for my kids, they love when dad is being crazy, lol.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Sorry dident see your last question Jben for changing the oil pump.Well im not to sure if you can just pull the bolts on the motor mounts and lift the motor up a bit to get at the oil pan bolts but i think its doable, crazy would no for sure,as for changing the oil pump its self thats the easy part, getting at its a different story, lol.I never really has a good look to see what kind of clearance there is under the truck to slide the oil pan out but i will check tonite when im in the shop :)

Crazy 01-06-2011 01:11 PM

You are a nut :tu: :pca1: :c:

Mapleleafpete 01-06-2011 02:53 PM

Lol thanx cr azy :) I've got more and was asked to do this on a weekly base's. Ill post another one but is there a proper thread for these. Ill do one for the group also to promote it if you want .

:w2:

Mapleleafpete 01-12-2011 02:05 PM

Ok finally got the oil pressure gauge installed and its not good news.I took the truck for a 20 mile drive to really warm up the oil and it was holding at about 23 to 25 lbs when driving on the hyw but once i stopped in my driveway and put it in park it slowly drops to about 5 or 6 lbs :argh: Now could it be a tired oil pump and the screen is starting to plug with sludge or would crank bearings do this also,im at a loss :s:

Crazy 01-12-2011 02:10 PM

Now could it be a tired oil pump and the screen is starting to plug with sludge or would crank bearings do this also
could be all of above hate say it can even be cam bearings how many miles again

Mapleleafpete 01-12-2011 03:45 PM

Theres only 160,000 miles on it and pretty sure the last owner took real good care of it,regular oil changes ans stuff, uggggg dont no what to do with it any more.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Another question Crazy,i have a 1993 with a 6.2 in it that would fit but it has a mechanical pump, can i swap pumps to make it electronic and fit the turbo on.The 93 ran like a charm but the body sora fell off it,lol. My other truck is a 94 so think if every thing fits that would be my cheapest option.

Crazy 01-12-2011 04:02 PM

with 160,000 i would pull the oil pan see if it ant clog up and maybe put new oil pump in and if you decide pull the pan run some oil cleaner throw it i just can't see it be the bearing if it been taking care of but who what can happen

on the 6.2 swap i be leave it can be done you have to use the injectors pump, turbo, intake ,exhaust manifolds timing cover, all the brackets and stuff of your truck

think you have to reroute the return line for turbo to back of 6.3 if i remember right and not sure about the Harmonic Balancer assy you have to do some checking on that but do know lots running 6.2 in there truck with 6.5 parts let know what you going to do if you decide i get list to getter for everything have to do swap

Mapleleafpete 01-12-2011 04:13 PM

Ok buddy,,im still a little pissed of about this, well pissed at the guy i bought the truck from. This is the second time he screws me.2 yrs ago i bought a snow machine from him,it looked mint and ran well so i bought it.About 60 miles later it run like crap so i tear the motor down to find he changed a piston in it and put a aftermarket piston in it.Snow machines dont run well will a stock bombardier piston and a aftermarket piston, lol. They are both differant wiegs so i fryed the motor.I rebulit it then sold it,the guy who bought it 2 yrs ago is still running it :tu:.So now he sells me this truck and problem after problem, thing is we live in a small town and every one no`s every one,why couldent he tell me it was on its way out and save me buying it,painting it,changeing the front drive shaft cause it stripped the 3rd day i drove it,ugggg you get my point.Im not very pleased and am noted to have a bit of an irish french temper so i hope i dont see him any time soon but its a small town :ouch:.lol. I think ill start drinking again and then make up my mind what to do,ha ha.Maybe ill just do a straight swap and dump the 6.2 in with out the turbo and sell the truck that way its sorta a easy swap other than a ton of cash for new exhaust and minor other stuff,,ok going to beat on the punching bag for a bit,lol..ill get back to ya bud :)

bjennen 01-12-2011 04:21 PM

What about running that Lucas Oil additive in it, it states it will increase oil pressure but i know its thicker..... so to pull the pan you basically have to pull the motor, if I do that from reading above, check the screen filter and if its not clogged then maybe the oil pump.:tttt:

Crazy 01-12-2011 04:47 PM

just may have to raise the motor try that lucas oil additive know lot ppl that use it swear but it

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

here ?? i should ask you right off the back old age getting to me so here the ? what brand oil filter are you running if you running Orange Fram can cause low psi and Make sure your oil cooler lines are intact.

but still going say oil pump bad

Mapleleafpete 01-12-2011 05:43 PM

I just had changed the oil and put a fram on it but thats when i noticed the oil pressure wasent any god so i put anothe filter on and i beleive its a luber finer ,some thing like that.I no the oil cooling lines are not connected for some reason, was like that when i bought the truck.Ill take a better look at underneath the truck tomorrow, thats what i was thinking i mite have to just take the motor mounts off and raise it up a couple inches to make room to slide the pan out.Guess ill start with that ,,thanx again Crazy ill keep you posted .:c:

mud 01-12-2011 06:33 PM

When i got my blazer it had a fram filter went to do oil change put filter wrench on went to turn it off filter just crushed i use donaldson never had a problem comes rite off:rocking:

bjennen 01-13-2011 07:20 AM

So in all your guys opinion which is the best filter to buy when I change the oil. Mapleleafpete, let me know what you come up with on getting your pan off, how much trouble it is, and also where are the oil cooler lines so i can make sure mine are hooked up.

Crazy 01-13-2011 08:40 AM

any filter good just stay away from fram filters but in my case it was 2qt napa filter with just 1200 miles on it but put other napa on it i always ran napa filter that was time i had trouble with them

Mapleleafpete 01-13-2011 06:20 PM

Where i live were limited to what we can get for filters, one shop in town so we gotta buy what he sells unless we go out of town witch is a drag.I havent looked under the truck yet Ben,im to depressed to tell you the truth, lol.Been doing a ton of reading and could be a lot of things like oil pump, cam bearings or just a tired motor witch i doubt. So im thinking cam bearings or oil pump, been looking around for a low milage 6.5 but what if i get one and im in the same boat, junk again!!! So theres allways rebuilding it,rings, bearings, cam bearings.Gonna look at prices for this,,Crazy do you no if i can change the cam bearings with the motor in the truck ? I no ill have to take the grill and stuff off to get the cam out and the tool to get the bearings in and out but was wondering if this was possible.Still havent confronted the p!@#k who sold me the truck yet but thats coming, lol.:bat:

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Crazy i found this rebuild kit, what ya think ?
1994-2002 Chevy 395 6.5L Diesel --ENGINE REBUILD KIT-- - eBay (item 280606911170 end time Jan-20-11 10:31:09 PST)

Crazy 01-13-2011 06:46 PM

yes you should be able do cam bearings with out pulling the motor

like i said before with 160,000 on motor bearings on crank and cam should be ok just put in new oil pump should be go again hell i got over 300,000 on mine never done any major engine work yet knock on wood my don't use any coolant yet and only oil it use is from leakey valve covers

not buy price for rebuild kit have look at long blocks yet you can fine some prices on them to

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

6.5 GM Chevy Diesel Engine Long Block, low miles, tested - eBay (item 220710950267 end time Dec-23-10 10:18:56 PST)

i hear lot good reports from this the guy i have to and know said these motor where like new

Mapleleafpete 01-13-2011 08:05 PM

lol i have that motor in my favorites crazy,,i just looked at them an hour or so ago.Heres the problem,,my WIFE,blhaaaa.Shes gonna blow a head gasket her self when she finds out im spending more money on trucks,i got 4 now and she keeps reminding me of that.I cant help it,some ppl collect stamps i collect trucks,lol..along with a lot of other stuff ,i have over 5000 classic comics dating as far back as early 60's,lot of spiderman, batman etc, well over 100,000 sports cards and even have some no one can even explain where they came from there that old and odd..so any how you get my drift on the old lady thing. That military army engine looks sooo tempting i mite just do it ;)

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Ok i just tryed to contack this guy but it wont let me,seems hes doesent ship to canada :(.One part of the add says he does and the other says he doesent.

Crazy 01-13-2011 08:34 PM

i hear on wife thing mine goes off every time say going this and that to the truck :bat:

try calling them tomorrow see what they say

bjennen 01-14-2011 07:51 AM

Ill third that with the wife, mine hates my truck and i swear I'll be a sleeping on the couch till I die if anything major goes wrong with this truck, I have a habit of forgeting the things she needs done and just remembering to work on my truck, maybe its not forgetting hehehe! Let me know what you come up with on the oil pump if you change yours out, i noticed mine had a lot of thick sludge in the top intake when I took it off and when it warms up I'll take it back off and clean it out all the way. Just trying to get it where I can drive it to keep it from sitting so long while its cold. I do think its getting time to replace the glow plugs and those things aren't cheap either, mine has white smoke when i start it on a cold day but that's another thread.:moon:
