First Diesel. What should i do??
Hey guys, i just bought a 1997 chevy gmt-400 6.5 diesel..
I've never owned or worked on a diesel before, i know plenty about working on gas engines and what not, i understand the concepts. but can you all give me a list of things to check/do? its got 318,000 on the body and 40kish on the engine/trans :tu: |
I have the 6.5 with the mechanical pump. I had some issues with it when i first got mine but you should have an electric one.... You having any noticeable issues? Using oil? Smoking? Shifting rough?

Keep an eye on your harmonic balancer, these engines are externally balanced and if the harmonic balancer starts to go you could snap your crankshaft in half.

If the engine has 40,000 miles on it, it has about 40,000 more!
Do all the service on it. Air, fuel and oil filters. All fluids. Check or replace all the brakes and inspect the lines for rust. Great thing to learn on. When I drove chevies, I noticed nothing went very far! water pumps, alternators, starters all seemed to be new every few years. |
Go to post 17 and download and read the mod list and do what it says:
