93 6.5l Turbo Diesel Idles but dies at 50MPH

Hi,

I am new to diesel engines and bought this 93 Chevy 1Ton Turbo Diesel. We replaced the PMD and mounted away from the engine. We also put all new fuel lines from tank to motor. Replaced sending unit and pump. The truck starts up and runs great until you try to go over 50MPH. It just dies like the fuel was shut off. No stuttering or stammering. It is hard to start after this happens unless you let it sit for about 30mins. I can climb hills and give it half to full throttle until I hit 50MPH. I was told the IP might be bad but it seems like something else to me. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Forgot to put in once this happens and you finally get it started it stutters and stammers unless you let it sit for a while.

Something is not jivvin' with your post. 93's do not have a PMD.
Wanna try again ?

Really I SAID I AM NEW TO DIESELS which means I might type something wrong instead of saying YOU"RE WRONG just say its the PCM not PMD.

So I replaced the PCM with a Heath

THANK YOU

I didn't say your wrong, I said something aint jivin. I figured you made a typo with the year. Anyway glad you fixed it and 93's don't have a PCM either. Only a TCM which controls the transmission if it's an Automatic. Heath is the go to guy. Not too much Bill doesn't know. Don't see how a TCM would cause your problems. You sure it's a 93 ?? Post a pic of the part you changed.

It is the PMD I just looked at the date on the truck door and it was made in 11/93 so its an early 94 model my bad I was told it was a 93. Also is there a way to edit the post title.

Try PM'ing a Mod from another subforum. We don;t seem to have a moderator dedicated to this forum but now it makes alot more sense. Jim, no one is trying to flame you but you posted PMD and 93 and that is just not possible.
Quick history lesson on the 6.5 Turbo Diesel. It was the bastard offspring of the 6.2 which was a gutless slob. Not a bad running engine, jut a pig. So in 92 GM introduced the 6.5. The 92 and 93 6.5TD's had mechanical injector pumps just like the 6.2 but slightly bigger plungers. IN 1994 in order to meet drivablity and emissions standards they changed over to the DS4 Inj pump which is what you have. They have had PMD problems from day one to the day they were no longer produced and replaced by the Dmax. So that was why we needed clarification on your truck. Now it makes perfect sense. I assume you bit the bullet and bought the Heath Diesel relocation kit ? it's pricey but Bill stands behind his 7 yr warranty and I suspect you will need it at some point as most fail again, even relocated one. Do yourself a favor and get on Ebay and find a guy, angelofishes, He sells used PMD's for around 50-60$. Buy one and stick it in the glove box. It may save you a tow some day. rule of thumb...PMD's...Carry a spare.

Thanks. Sorry about the earlier posts this truck is just pissing us off. I replaced the air filter cause it was beyond nasty, but I'm sure that's not the issue. I will check out what you have posted and thanks again

No problem, we are here to help.
Don't be afraid to get Bill Heath on the phone either. He is a hard guy to reach so be patient but I can assure you his knowledge is unsurpassed.

I found a 2 prong connector not connected on the back side of the motor. The wires go under the fuel filter. I think they go to the IP. I have to go buy some diesel fuel to take it out for a test run but I was wondering if anyone knew what that connector goes to.

Thanks

Most likely the fuel heater in the filter housing, they can fail and cause blown glow plug fuses.
