2500HeavyDuty,

Thanks so much for posting this, it went really smooth! I really appreciate it!!

Well im gonna give it a shot on my 2008 duramax doolie soon as I got 32% life left on it. I had an 05 doolie duramax and tryed it and ill be damned I broke the line going to the rear injector as fuel was pouring out. Luckly my dealer coverd that under warintee. so im kinda gunshy to try it on my 2008 but at 40.00 for a filter compared to 110.00 to have the dealer do it?? Better money in my pocket. Any suggestions. Ya im mechanicaly enclined but once bitten twice shy. I stilll got night mares of the broken injector line on my 05. Very good post on the filter change and great photos. I am just curious my 2008 is this is the 3rd or 4th gen of the duramax?? Was it the same way on all generations to change the fuel filter??

urs is a lmm so i guess it can be called a 4th gen. alot of people can change it from the top i do sometimes. but first time get some pin pullers for the clips holding the plastic fender liner on its tricky to get the filter on there you have to develop a feel for it.

its all basically the same procedure.

Thanks so much my friend. As I mentioned im so gun shy from snapping that injector line on my 2005 that it makes me hesitant to replace the one on my 08. Ill get a clip puller and do it that way. Last thing I need is another snapped injector line. then again im guessing the lines are different on my 08 over my 05? This is a great forum and im a newbie. I know gas but im virgin on diesel motors so forgive my ignorance please. Ill take your suggestion to heed and do it that way. As I said I got 32% left and only 10,000 miles on it. I got a run from NY to KY. to deliver a 64 belvadier then possibly to Mich. To deliver a b.b. cobra then back home to NY . So im unsure if ill do it before this trip or after. Thankyou so much again for getting back to my post.

Im guessing that injector line you snapped was the injector return line, yeah its still there, you should have no problem with it being in your way getting it from the side. One thing i should add is that if you buy a WIX filter it comes with a huge rubber seal that goes in the top center of the fuel filter, kinda looks like a grommet. The last time i changed my filter the rubber seal from the old filter got stuck up in the filter housing and it prevented me from putting the new one on.

i dont have a pic of it but you will see it, its a fat one

transam86 10-30-2009 06:44 PM

that bleeder screw why do so many snap it or are afrade of snapping it? Whats it made of?? Also is snug good enough for a tightness for that bleeder screw?? I just found out reading all the posts on this topic that the bleeder screw is plastic sadly HOW DUMB IS THAT??? Im only going to snug it back in place. Yes it was the return line for that injector. So im defanetly gonna pull part or the whole fenderwell cover out and get a 100% visual on the whole thing for this first time changing it. WHAT A KICK ASS FORUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks
Eddie B

2500HeavyDuty 10-30-2009 07:29 PM

pretty dumb.... i keep mine bleeder screw finger tight, i have a lift pump on it so even with 12psi pushing against it it doesn't leak. and its always easy to bleed no tools required i just unscrew it with my fingers.

transam86 11-01-2009 06:50 PM

thanks so much brother. I was figuring on snug thats all now that I know its plastic. I see the knoledge on this forum is 2nd to none im so glad I bumped into yous

Thanks

Thanks for the post and all the pics.
I'll be doing my first FF change sometime in the next couple of months.

I'll probably at least try to do it from the top though.

Rocco 11-06-2009 01:40 PM

I just followed the directions here and I ran into an issue. I took out an Ac Delco TP 1298B and replaced it with a Baldwin. There was a rubber insert in the center of the ac delco filter. I thought it must belong in the new filter so I put it into the Baldwin. There was no way I could get the filter close to the threads so I removed the rubber insert and the baldwin went on what felt like a snug fit. So now i'm sitting here wondering what if the rubber was supposed to be in there and now my fuel is not being filtered. Hope someone knows of this. Please help calm my concerns or tell me to take it out and put the rubber in. It seems like baldwin would have includedd one like they did the two o rings.

Rttoys 11-06-2009 01:59 PM

Check up in the filter houseing for that ring. Sometimes they stick up in there and you'll need to fish it out.

On the new filter (and old one too) there is one rubber seal in the middle and an o-ring around the edge

2500HeavyDuty 11-06-2009 02:01 PM

I found this somewhere else that explains it better than i could off the top of my head. theres a rubber seal that sometimes gets stuck up top

pdate on this fuel filter change problem:

I discovered why the new filter would not even come close to starting onto the filter housing. I took a mirror and looked at the under side of the filter housing and learned there is a rubber gromet that fits into the center section of the filter head and when I removed the original filter that gromet pulled out of the filter head and stayed on the center tube part of the underside of the filter housing. The new filter also had a new rubber gromet in place thus the filter would not go.

I removed the old rubber gromet from the filter housing and again attempted to install the new filter but I still could not get it onto the filter housing far enough to reach the threads. WTF?

The fact that I can't see under there to see what I am doing and have my arms wrapped around the AC lines to where I cannot get any leverage is greatly complicating what should be an easy job. I am guessing the rubber gromet just needs to be forced and stretched a bit to fit over the tube and the filter pushed upward hard enough to reach the threads, but so far I haven't been able to make this happen. I am thinking of rubbing the rubber gromet with some silicone grease to hopefully make this doable.

Will report later.

Dave

t seems a little slippery slicone helped everything go together. Finally got filter on far enough to engage threads, tightened it up a bit, bled the system, pumped it up, cranked it up, checked for leaks. All appears to be OK. May do a test run to the grocery store later.

BTW, I did not have to remove the fender liner but did use the zip lock bag trick (learned here). Once the old filter was off and in the bag, I set it on the frame directly below the filter housing and could reach in the fender well, bend the lower end of the fender liner out just a bit and could get the old filter out right there. Reverse the process for new filter by setting it on the frame via fender well, then reaching down from the top to get it, and install on filter housing.

I hope all of this documentation helps some other poor soul get thru this with much less difficulty and challenge.

Thank you for this but do you think that the filter will do its job without the rubber gromet in the middle.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

BTW the Baldwin did not have a rubber gromet in the middle.

remove plastic fender liner its easy and accsess to filter is better

I never changed filter in my 08(12K). I will change and add pyro at the same time now, thanks.

I did not see anyone mention using a patch panel for easier access ?

DaBomb 12-14-2009 08:20 PM

In addition to these i always open the fuel cap when priming mine. Top or thru the fender well they both work fine. I did see on ebay an access door to cut into the liner.

hogheadcheez10 12-23-2009 08:21 AM

Guys, Last night I changed my fuel filter on my 04 d-max and overtightened the bleed screw on filter housing. And of course it broke.. We found that the caps off of a motorcycle battery (screw on caps) fit perfectly. Will order Stainless one but this fix works for now.. Hope it helps!!!!

2500HeavyDuty 12-23-2009 02:53 PM

yeah the bleeder screw only needs yo be finger tight

Great Fuel Filter Replacement Summary

2500HeavyDuty, Thanks for the detailed fuel filter replacement article. Removing the inner fender cover was definitely the trick that works on my '08 3500HD. Tried from above, even after removing the airfilter intake - no joy. Taking 10min to remove the inner fender cover made the job a snap.
Thanks again for the clear description and pics!https://www.dieselbombers.com/images/smilies/cheers.gif

Well, I changed mine today (first time).

It took about a half hour. I didn't want to mess with the fender liner; I just removed the the air intake tube and then the 2 bolts that hold the filter housing on the block. There is enough flex in the fuel lines to move the whole housing to the side far enough to turn it up-side-down to unplug the WIF wire. Then loosened the filter a little bit, and rotated it right-side-up to unscrew it without spilling a drop.

With the filter off, I just pushed the housing aside and brought the filter right out the top.
I poured the fuel in a clean plastic container, swapped out the WIF sensor, installed the new o-rings and poured most of the fuel back in the new filter. I put it all back together and it only took 3 pumps on the primer and I was done.

The housing bolts take a 13mm wrench; WIF sensor is 38mm.
I didn't even need a filter wrench or strap.

Your step by step on the fuel filter swap was awesome and saved me some $$$ that i didn't have at the time. It took me 10 minutes tops to complete. I did the project with just the hood open. Thank you for taking the time to post the step by step.
Cheers
