Now, before you get all mad, stop and think about what I just wrote. You employ that action because you want to. Sure, it's your way of showing respect for those that have gone before you as well. But ultimately it's because you want to do it. Which is exactly what Begle1 is saying. Doesn't matter if no one else is doing it, right? You're going to do it anyway, as your own personal show of respect.

Dude, don't take this personally. I'm just using your post to make a point. You probably will anyway, and I apologise. I'm not trying to rattle any cages this morning. Maybe later I will, but not now. :c:

Some People Just Have No Respect

That's the great thing about this country. Everybody has the right to think and do pretty much whatever they want within certain bounds. Some people think that's worth a little showing of respect. Some think enough of it to serve in the military and defend it from our enemies. Others have their head so far up their butts they will never understand. To each his own. :c:

And we got a mind reader:

Be careful, in case if you ever get the brilliant idea to try and put words in my mouth.

And lest we get into semantics, don't get too technical with your backpeddling.

Zealots, I tell ya. Freakin' weirdos, those anthem singers. :w2:

It's amazing how blindly idiots will follow chain emails that make no sense and have no credible source. Thank you Budgreen for posting the info you did.

Not wearing the ribbons or lapels has been a long standing policy for most news departments. They're supposed to be giving the report from a neutral position.

So, if I understood snopes, this was ABCs policy long before 9/11. And Obama wasn't mentioned and didnt have anything to do with the policy.

Did something more recent happen that had to do with Obama? :humm:

That's what I got out of reading snopes, too. Personally, I don't think we have to be neutral toward our own county whether a reporter or not.
I am not a world news reporter so I have no background information to use to weigh out how much a lapel pin could put a reporter at risk when the reporter is in the US. I have no idea what it is like for US reporters when in other countries-seems it could be valid.
They should be able to wear pins or whatever when they are not on air, tho--unless they're in some other country on a special report, and their company thinks it could endanger them.

There's lots of corporate restrictions about showing the flag, dressing in uniform for the military and even female contractors and military officers wearing normal western style clothing outside our borders. America, the U.S.in particular, is not well-liked overseas, generally speaking. Even some of our allies while publicly supportive, take a dim view of us and anti-American sentiment runs deep with the general population in many places.

The problem I have WRT this subject is U.S. citizens within our own borders who publicly exhibit less than patriotic attitudes. I guess we can't all be petty-brained fascists with an authority fetish. :nope:

Why worry about how somebody publicly exhibits an attitude? That's nobody's place to worry about.

You know how Americans used to be told to publicly exhibit their patriotic attitudes?

When a government tells its people how they should be patriotic, they're walking the path of facism. If patriotism isn't spontaneous then it's false, it's not something that can be taught. Only a display, a hand over a heart, a superficial exhibition can be taught. And once it's taught it may or may not be patriotism, but it is indoctrination.

It is explicitly unamerican to judge anybody because they're not wearing a flag lapel, or they're not respecting the national anthem "properly", or because they'd rather not say the Pledge of Allegiance for the 2000th time in their life... I personally have nothing to prove regarding my patriotism, if you think I'm unpatriotic because I don't succumb to the superficial peer pressure of the flag code then I think poorly of you.

Who's Telling What?

Nice try Begel. So which is it? I'm either seeing mixed signals or the tap dance prior to removal of foot from mouth. Who's telling who what about how they should demonstrate their patriotism? You or the Government? IIRC, the flag code is not enforceable, i.e. NOT law, and NOT punishable. But you have issues with people holding their hands in a certain way.

Pretty easy to see who has the ideas about telling others what they should or should not be doing during the national anthem. Maybe that's a distinction between communism and fascism...

Begle1 09-27-2011 07:28 PM

I only take issue with the "zealots" who take issue with those that don't do as they do. I have no issues with them holding their hands over their hearts, only with their judgement against me for not doing so and their attempts to coerce me to do the same.

As I said,
You can do as however you see fit as an independent American citizen.

If you're judging somebody based on a superficial body position, I think you're a petty-brained fascist with an authority fetish.

If it's a natural gesture for you, more power to you. I have nothing against the gesture if it's natural. For me, it's simply not natural.

Fail.

Damn straight. And you can keep your opinions about it to yourself.

Don't trip over your own feet backpedaling. :lol88:

You have failed to enlighten anyone with your disrespect for this country.

Nice going. :tu:

I am just disappointed no matter where this tradition started that those that have given so much are not given the respect they deserve . I do it out of respect and patriotism . I do it for the men and women who have given their life limb other family members so you can have the right not to . Just wish those that don't respect this tradition would not excersize this right in public.
