Looking at pistols

Within the next few weeks I am planning on buying a pistol. The reason I'm saying within the next few weeks is that I have to buy batteries for the truck and I hoping to be able to buy them next week. Anyway, are there any good or decent 9mm, .40, or .45 out there for like less than $200? I've been checking out the Hi Points but I don't really care for how they feel. My friend has a 9mm and the grip is almost too small for my hand and with the heavy bulky slide, it just feels weird to hold, imo. Are there any other cheap but good ones out there? I'd prefer an auto loader but will check out revolvers as well. Thanks.

scarecrow 10-01-2010 08:15 PM

200.00 for a 9mm. thats gonna be tuff. i would think the best cheapest gun in a 9mm semi would be the keltec pf9 or p11....if you decide to go for a revolver look into the taurus or charter arms. there again thats the best of the bottom....what are you looking to do with the gun? target , home defense , conceal carry. are you a big guy with big bear paws?

Rustin 10-01-2010 08:20 PM

Wow. Hope things work out for you if you need anything let me know.

FordDZLMan9191 10-01-2010 09:06 PM

I know its going to be hard to find something so cheap. I'm an averaged size guy with average size hands. I don't want a real small gun and I've noticed that most of the keltecs are small frame guns. It'll be a target, defense gun and probably conceal carried when I get my license. Just basically an all around gun. My shotgun is a bit big and bulky to pack around all the time lol

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

I might be able to go a little higher than $200, it would just take me a bit longer to get the money for something more expensive. Any opinions on EAA firearms? I found a SIG knock-off, basically, made by European American Arms(EAA) for $290 on CheaperThanDirt.com that I like the features of. Its a 9mm, ambidextrous safety and mag release, 15 round capacity, etc. 54984 - EAA Zastava EZ Semi-Automatic Handgun 9mm 4" Barrel 15 Rounds Aluminum Frame Blued Finish

I would say save your pennies till you have enough to buy a decent gun. While you're saving, go to some ranges and try out as many as you can. Get a "feel" for what EXACTLY whay you want. This way, you're not buying another pistol 6 months later cause your first one "just doesn't cut it anymore". Good luck! BTW I wound up liking the S&W M&P.

SmokiinRam 10-01-2010 11:02 PM

I would spent 300 bucks more for a glock but thats just my opinion and theyre a trusted brand

There aren't any ranges near where I live, unfortunately. But I know a few people that have a few guns that I might be able to try out.

I'd like to get a Glock. I like the way they feel but I've never shot one.

akguppy 10-01-2010 11:37 PM

Yep save up and get a quality pistol.

FordDZLMan9191 10-02-2010 12:09 AM

How about a quality pistol for $270? S&W .40 but the kicker is its a used police gun. Here's the link, check it out and let me know what you think. Used Smith & Wesson SW40E Police Trade In $269.00 SHIPS FREE

smokeeaterlb7 10-02-2010 07:46 AM

go for a good used glock. you will be happier overall with a quality pistol compared to some Russian made junk that only cost 200 bucks. If not a glock, my second choice would a springfield XD.

zwhite97 10-02-2010 08:26 AM

You could check out the Springfield XD series pistols. You can configure the back straps and get the perfect feel. I personally use Glocks and Kimbers but to each his own.

FordDZLMan9191 10-02-2010 09:59 AM

The Kimber I want is $1200 :scare2: I like Glocks. I like the way they feel and fit in my hand but I've never shot one. With them should I just stick with a 9mm(G19)? I want something that is going to have relatively easy to find and cheap ammo. What do you guys think of the .40(G23) and .357sig(G32)?

smokeeaterlb7 10-02-2010 10:52 AM

I have a G19 myself. My only complaint with it is the grip is a little short for my liking, but that is easily fixed with a longer mag and a grip extension on the mag.

FordDZLMan9191 10-02-2010 02:34 PM

After doing some reading and watching some videos I'm debating between a Glock 17 and Glock 19. I like the full size grip on the 17 but like the size of the 19 better. Should I go new or used? Obviously used is going to be cheaper but I think it might be easier to get a new one or to at least buy a used one through a store. Where I live, as long as your 10 minute background check comes back clean, you're walking out of the store with a brand new gun. :yeah:

gunman41mag 10-02-2010 03:19 PM

I don't like GLOCK, cause they have NO safety. Buy a 1911 or a CZ 75, both these guns have a thumb safety, both are ACCURATE & both can be carried COCKED-N-LOCKED:tu: If you want to buy a gun check out these two web-sites GUNBROKER & AUCTION ARMS:yeah:

smokeeaterlb7 10-02-2010 04:12 PM

To each his own^^ thats actually one thing i like about he glock. but everyone is different. If you like the glock style, but want a safety, look into the XD series.

But as with everything in life, buy what suits your needs, and what feels right to you. you can have the shiniest, best looking gun in the world, but it dont mean squat if you cant shoot it accurately.

Captain Call 10-02-2010 04:16 PM

Amen to that ^^^^ The reason I went with the S&W is I'm a southpaw and that gun fit me the best. I wanted an XD until I handled one. It all boils down to what works for you, all we can do is suggest options for you to mull over.

I am a lefty as well. I had an XD 45 and sold it because it was awkward for me to handle like that. The glock is a little easier with it being sans safety and all. but the mag release is still a little funky. buti can deal with that

Captain Call 10-02-2010 04:33 PM

That's why I went with the S&W M&P.....mag release can be changed.

FordDZLMan9191 10-02-2010 05:51 PM

Thanks guys. My sister is also looking at a gun for defense and she shoots left handed so I've been looking for options for her as well. I think I'm just going to go with a 9mm but I'm going to check out a couple 1911 .45s as well.

I have GLOCK models 17, 19, 22, 23, 34, 20,21 BUT I wouldn't carry one:nope: WHY, cause if you have one in the chamber & while fighting some butt-wipe, if he grabs your gun your done:scare2: A kid grabs it while it's in the nightstand:scare2: you're going to jail:moon: GLOCK can't shoot lead bullets:td:{VERY DANGEROUS) don't do it:ouch: YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH A 1911:tu:

bosslady 10-02-2010 07:00 PM

I own a 9mm Glock 19.... as stated it doesnt have a safty...however.. alot of the holsters avaliable , like the one i own...has a safety built in. you slide the gun in and the holster locks around the trigger gurd.. and when you reach to grab the pistol... your finger naturally falls onto the release. Something else to consider.

I realize the dangers of owning firearms, especially around children. I've had gun safety pounded into my head ever since my parents started letting me play with toy guns. I keep my guns unloaded and out of reach of children and when I buy a pistol, I will buy a pistol safe that it will be locked in at night, which will be the only time that it wont be on my hip. I plan on taking some training classes also.

The biggest thing I have against a 1911 is that I've seen them in 9mm but I want one in .45 which is expensive ammo. I haven't made up my mind for sure that for 9mm I'm going to get a Glock but it will probably be my first choice. I'll check the XDs, M&Ps, and others in the $400-500 range. I should be able to save up about that much by the end of the month. :c:

If I get a Glock, I plan on buying the Blackhawk Serpa holster which is like you described. I am a big fan of those. I don't like having a strap or thumb break style holster.

You must have a LOADED GUN that you can get in a B L I N K of an eye:humm: Hide it, but you should be able to grab it quick:tu: You can get a 1911 in any caliber you want:yeah: I have a B I G gun safe:jump: But I also have at least 8 guns that are very well H I D D EN in my house:w2::w2::w2:

FordDZLMan9191 10-02-2010 07:33 PM

I have to modify my previous statement. Right now I keep my shotgun loaded and in a corner of my bedroom. I can get to it quick but its not where my sisters kids can get to it. If you saw my room, you'd agree that it would be difficult to hide a gun in it. I live in an apartment so I can't make one of those hidden holes in the wall or anything fancy like that.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

What is the difference between the XD and XDm? I don't know enough about them to see any difference.

zwhite97 10-02-2010 08:40 PM

I'm not sure about the differences on the XD's. As far as the Glock, you'll be good with the Serpa. That's what I use for my Glock. On the Glock, three things have to happen before it will go off. Meaning there are three different safety mechanisms in the gun. If you haven't checked Springfield's site yet, here it is..

Springfield Armory

I didn't find any hard info on the differences between the XD and XDm.

My main pistol is a Kimber Pro Carry II. It's a 4 inch with a Hogue wrap around grip and night sites. I really like it. You can pick those up for around $600ish.

drtydsl 10-02-2010 09:15 PM

I love the two glocks i have(17&26)< the 26 is what i c/c, and about them not having a safety, a glock has what is called a safe action trigger so its kinda like on safety all the time in a way

$600ish used? I'm not finding a new one that cheap. I want the Tactical Pro II but its a $1200 gun so I'll have to wait to get it.

Just did some research on the XD and the only feature it has that I like that the Glocks do not have is the loaded chamber indicator. Its 3 oz heavier and everything else is pretty much just like a glock.

XDm is the second gen XD. the grip is a little bit different and other subtle changes. it you look at pictures, you will see what i am talking about.

AABEAR 10-03-2010 07:10 AM

Also look at some Taurus I like the Bersa thunder 9mm 17rd+1 I have 2 of them and both of them will out shoot my Rugers P85 or P95 so look around there is some good used gun's out there also save your money DO NOT buy a HI-POINT they are hard to trade off! BUY a good gun to start off with you will not be sorry.

elshadow001 10-03-2010 09:08 AM

Try a drug dealer on the corner!

Seriously I don't think you are going to get anything that works for $200. I paid $85 just to renew my Concealed Weapon License.

Even pawn shops will be over $300 for junk.

I wish you well keep looking and ask your neighbors. Well maybee you can go to San Fransico they have lots of people there that don't like guns and want to get rid of them.

SmokiinRam 10-03-2010 11:13 AM

IMO .45 isnt a very accurate round beyond 35yards,because its a low pressure round and heavy it just arcs.Id recommend a .40S&W it shoots flatter, but also has a little more recoil

zwhite97 10-03-2010 12:52 PM

God forbid you ever have to use your pistol for self defense. But if you do, your encounter, 99% of the time, will be between 7-10 yards. My G30 that I traded my Kimber for would shoot accurately out to 25yards. Plus, if anyone is hit with the right .45 hollow point, they aint goin very far. I agree that the .40 S&W shoots flatter. Good luck to the OP on your search. If you shoot a lot, you might want to think about getting into reloading. It's a fun hobby and saves you money and can be done quickly with a progressive loader.

safe action trigger, my rectum:scare2: If the glock is loaded & a pencil, twig, little kids finger, or anything that wonders into the trigger guard & pushes or pull on the trigger the glock will fire:s:

This is what my wife choose for concealed carry. It's a Charter Arms Undercover in .38 special +P. 5-shot cylinder and amazingly accurate for a "snubby". Thing we both like about it is the grip is big enough to get your little finger on, which aids considerably in control and instinctive/reflex style shooting (shooting at natural point-of-aim; i.e. not using the sights) but still carries very comfortable in an inside-the-waistband holster. Since you are a southpaw, they even offer the, well, Southpaw version (below) which has the cylinder release on the opposite side of the frame and the cylinder swings out to the right. They also have Double Action Only versions with a shrouded hammer if you like that idea. We bought wifey's for $309 brand new.

Are they a Smith & Wesson? NO. But they are still well made... here in the STATES and they go BANG every time you pull the trigger.

If you want more "ooomph" than the .38 has to offer, they also market the "Pug", chambered in .357 Magnum. I would recommend practicing with .38 special loads if you go this route as recoil with full-house .357 loads can only be described as FIERCE, even with the ported barrel, but loaded with preminm 125 grain hollow-points, you would have one of the best man-stoppers available that can be fired with one hand.:bat:

I realize many don't feel revolvers are "cool" in these days of High-cap autos, but as a defensive weapon, they are near perfect. They don't jam. There's no switches, bells or whistles you have to worry about disengaging before it will fire and they will shoot ANY LOAD, no matter how nasty and wicked the gaping hollow-point may be. Something many autos may not do. In other words, they are utterly reliable.

Go here to see the whole line-up: Welcome to Charter Arms

Black hawk makes OK stuff... Although I cant praise my Crossbreed Supertuck enough. Wear it all day three or four days a week and I can honestly say it is teh most comfortable holster I have ever worn and teh BEST concelment holster hands down I have ever worn.

Crossbreed Holsters > Home

I wore mine all day yesterday with a t-shirt that was pretty tight on me and when I got home and undressed for bed the wife asked if I had the gun on all day, she never saw it. This was a day of driving, climbing ladders, walking around shopping and goofing off... never once did it get in teh way or feel uncomfortable. I can honestly say I forget its there sometimes.
