The vzw "unlimited" smartphone plan does have a cap and its actually around 6 gigs iirc.
I used to do exactly what your saying. Get the mifi or a card though over tethering to a gateway device. The phone connection drops all the time, the card is a little better.

This is completely incorrect. The data plans for wireless internet through a card for your laptop has a 5 gig limit. The phone services do not have a limit because you are not supposed to be able to theater without going through them (then the 5 gig limit is in effect) with a free program like PDAnet they don't know and your limit stays unlimited. I have been over 8 gig a couple times on my phone and never gotten one penny more in my bill.

Pretty much as long as you don't tell them they wont put the limit on.
