WD-40 - taken from junk email...Interesting if its true

What is the main ingredient of WD-40 ?

Before you read to the end, does anybody know what the main ingredient of WD-40 is? Don't lie and don't cheat. WD-40. Who knew; I had a neighbor who bought a new pickup. I got up very early one Sunday morning and saw that someone had spray painted red all around the sides of this beige truck (for some unknown reason). I went over, woke him up, and told him the bad news. He was very upset and was trying to figure out what to do.... probably nothing until Monday morning, since nothing was open. Another neighbor came out and told him to get his WD-40 and clean it off. It removed the unwanted paint beautifully and did not harm his paint job that was on the truck. I'm impressed! WD-40 who knew? 'Water Displacement #40'. The product began from a search for a rust preventative solvent and degreaser to protect missile parts. WD-40 was created in 1953 by three technicians at the San Diego Rocket Chemical Company. Its name comes from the project that was to find a 'water displacement' compound.. They were successful with the fortieth formulation, thus WD-40. The Convair Company bought it in bulk to protect their atlas missile parts. Ken East (one of the original founders) says there is nothing in WD-40 that would hurt you... When you read the 'shower door' part, try it. It's the first thing that has ever cleaned that spotty shower door. If yours is plastic, it works just as well as glass. It's a miracle! Then try it on your stove top ... Viola! It's now shinier than it's ever been. You'll be amazed.
WD-40 uses:

1. Protects silver from tarnishing.
2. Removes road tar and grime from cars.
3. Cleans and lubricates guitar strings.
4. Gives floors that 'just-waxed' sheen without making them slippery.
5.. Keeps flies off cows.
6. Restores and cleans chalkboards.
7. Removes lipstick stains.
8.. Loosens stubborn zippers.
9. Untangles jewelry chains.
10. Removes stains from stainless steel sinks.
11. Removes dirt and grime from the barbecue grill.
12. Keeps ceramic/terra cotta garden pots from oxidizing.
13. Removes tomato stains from clothing.
14. Keeps glass shower doors free of water spots.
15. Camouflages scratches in ceramic and marble floors.
16. Keeps scissors working smoothly..
17. Lubricates noisy door hinges on vehicles and doors in homes.
18. It removes black scuff marks from the kitchen floor! Use WD-40 for those nasty tar and scuff marks on flooring. It doesn't seem to harm the finish and you won't have to scrub nearly as hard to get them off. Just remember to open some windows if you have a lot of marks.
19. Bug guts will eat away the finish on your car if not removed quickly! Use WD-40!
20. Gives a children's playground gym slide a shine for a super fast slide.
21. Lubricates gear shift and mower deck lever for ease of handling on riding mowers...
22.. Rids kids rocking chairs and swings of squeaky noises.
23. Lubricates tracks in sticking home windows and makes them easier to open..
24. Spraying an umbrella stem makes it easier to open and close.
25. Restores and cleans padded leather dashboards in vehicles, as well as vinyl bumpers.
26. Restores and cleans roof racks on vehicles.
27. Lubricates and stops squeaks in electric fans
28. Lubricates wheel sprockets on tricycles, wagons, and bicycles for easy handling.
29. Lubricates fan belts on washers and dryers and keeps them running smoothly.
30. Keeps rust from forming on saws and saw blades, and other tools.
31. Removes splattered grease on stove.
32. Keeps bathroom mirror from fogging.
33. Lubricates prosthetic limbs.
34. Keeps pigeons off the balcony (they hate the smell).
35. Removes all traces of duct tape.
36. Folks even spray it on their arms, hands, and knees to relieve arthritis pain.
37. Florida ’s favorite use is: 'cleans and removes love bugs from grills and bumpers.'
38. The favorite use in the state of New York , WD-40 protects the Statue of Liberty from the elements.
39. WD-40 attracts fish. Spray a little on live bait or lures and you will be catching the big one in no time. Also, it's a lot cheaper than the chemical attractants that are made for just that purpose. Keep in mind though, using some chemical laced baits or lures for fishing are not allowed in some states.
40. Use it for fire ant bites.. It takes the sting away immediately and stops the itch.
41. WD-40 is great for removing crayon from walls. Spray on the mark and wipe with a clean rag.
42. Also, if you've discovered that your teenage daughter has washed and dried a tube of lipstick with a load of laundry, satur ate the lipstick spots with WD-40 and rewash. Presto! The lipstick is gone!
43. If you sprayed WD-40 on the distributor cap, it would displace the moisture and allow the car to start.

P.S. The basic ingredient is FISH OIL.

good for everything i've read about this somewhere before and from what i understand it works:yeah:

jrad989 05-06-2010 05:00 PM

i believe this! i use it to take stuff left over from old window decals. it cleans all kinds of stuff. :tu:

Dr. Evil 05-06-2010 05:49 PM

Well, its not that good of a lubricant so I guess its good for something afterall.

Works good for wiping off sharpy marker.

#35

as it turns out the only thing that can easily remove ducktap is the other do all product WD40

Why would you have stains in a STAINLESS Steel sink? isn't it STAINLESS?

25. Restores and cleans padded leather dashboards in vehicles, as well as vinyl bumpers.

this also works on vinyl seats like in work trucks that get real dirty and greasy. also works better than Armor All......

i'll have to try this....

i'll keep this in mind since i got a little one....

anyone who has had a car with the older points system knows this is SO true....

that is all.....

12vcummins96 05-06-2010 08:20 PM

never would have thunk it :humm:
but i love the stuff i fire off my diesel tractor with it

Dr. Evil 05-06-2010 08:22 PM

Um, if Stainless Steel gets scratched - it can rust. I think thats what they were talking about.

That is all.

ArizonaRedneck 05-06-2010 09:26 PM

1970 chevrolet 4-4 pickup distributor in the back loved wd -40 after going through a water hole worked every time been a while though i geuss the early eighties:w2::yeah:

Captain Call 05-06-2010 09:32 PM

is it bad that I knew the "secret ingredient" for years?

94 12valve 05-06-2010 10:51 PM

interesting I never knew what the WD stood for :tu:

Deezel Stink3r 05-07-2010 04:42 AM

I didn't know about the fish oil- just fourty tries to find the right formula.
We also use petroleum jelly for long term storage- it's very good for machined surfaces.

Most of you remember the bulky gallon stamped steel canisters WD-40 was(is) sold in?
If it sits a long period of time rust will develop inside the canister. It is important to shake that can once in a while to avoid seperating indigridients.

Spray it on warm and hot surfaces (engine bay). The heat evaporates WD-40 real quick leaving a protectant surface film which makes further cleaning and handling easier.

Stainless steel itself shouldn't rust. It's basically transmitted rust from other metal surfaces.
For that reason we have special stainless tools to avoid this.

You have an ATV? Spray it on the underside of your fenders. Mud won't stick that bad until next cleaning.

RAW 05-07-2010 07:37 AM

"Stainless" is the improper word for the majority of alloys. Stain-resistant is more correct, Stainless just sounds better to the consumer.

WD 40 doesnt have crap on PB Blaster. just saying

kazairl 05-07-2010 09:12 AM

For a penetrating oil? I agree. But then I prefer Free or Kroil over PB Blaster.

But for most of us who dislike the smell of penetrating oils WD40 works better as it doesn't smell so much.

You can add one more to your list. WD40 also works great for detangling hair. We use it a lot in getting cockleburrs and stickers out of our horses' manes and tails. Spray it on and it works out much much easier with a comb. Way better than just hacking it all off. Never tried it on human hair but I bet it works just as good.

Dr. Evil 05-07-2010 09:35 AM

There must be something other than fish oil in there. On the can it says it poison.

Probably not the best idea to put that on your skin like tip 36 says. My uncle knew a guy that actually did that. He claimed it worked.

Deezel Stink3r 05-07-2010 09:55 AM

It burns pretty good too.
I don't believe there is any fish oil in it. It seems to be pure petroleum destilates.

I use WD 40 also with an acetylen torch to loosen stuborn plugs in engine blocks.
heating up the plug with the torch. Let it cool off again and spray it with WD. Take a small wrench and screw the plugs out with ease.

Ahhh crap:argh: I just filled my deep fryer with it. I was thinkin what could be better than deep frying fish in fish oil:dang:

But like Doc said my dad actually knew a guy that he golfed with that would spray it on his knees for arthritis and swore by it:humm:Have another beer:c: I think it had to be in his head.:s:

2500HeavyDuty 05-07-2010 10:41 AM

so is it safe to eat then? :humm:

Captain Call 05-07-2010 10:44 AM

Just cause fish oil is in there means nothing......it's 1 of many ingredients

wd40 ingredients, according to their MSDS sheet.
http://www.wd40company.com/files/pdf...d482671453.pdf

Aliphatic Hydrocarbon 45-50%
Petroleum Base Oil <25%
LVP Aliphatic Hydrocarbon 12-18%
Surfactant <2%
Non-Hazardous Ingredients <10%

Aliphatic compound
Any organic chemical compound in which the carbon atoms are joined in straight chains, as in hexane (C6H14), or in branched chains, as in 2-methylpentane (CH3CH(CH3)CH2CH2CH 3).

Hydrocarbon 50%
Any of a class of chemical compounds containing only hydrogen and carbon (for example, the alkanes and alkenes). Hydrocarbons are obtained industrially principally from petroleum and coal tar.

Physical Properties of Petroleum-Based Oil 25%
Petroleum-based oil describes a broad range of natural hydrocarbon-based substances and refined petroleum products, each having a different chemical composition. As a result, each type of crude oil and refined product has distinct physical properties, that affect the way oil spreads and breaks down, the hazard it may pose to marine and human life, and the likelihood that it will pose a threat to natural and man-made resources. For example, light refined products, such as gasoline and kerosene, spread on water surfaces and penetrate porous soils quickly. Fire and toxic hazards are high, but the products evaporate quickly and leave little residue. Alternatively, heavier refined oil products may pose a lesser fire and toxic hazard and do not spread on water as readily. Heavier oils are more persistent, however, and may present a greater remediation challenge.

LVP Aliphatic Hydrocarbon 18% Same as above just with a lower vapor pressure (LVP).

Carbon Dioxide 3%, inert gas that is used as a propellant (in the canned version the above list is for the bulk non compressed WD-40), Also used in beer and soda. This is the main cause for Beer farts.

Non-Hazardous Ingredients <10% Typically proprietary ingredients.

It’s NOT Fish Oil!

Deezel Stink3r 05-07-2010 10:52 AM

Two things to think about:
WD-40 - taken from junk email...Interesting if its true

I don't know any other cleaner,or penetrant not containing or based on petroleum destillates.

Dr. Evil 05-07-2010 10:53 AM

Yeah, I just checked the can - petroleum distillates. Damn internet.

Benjamin 05-07-2010 10:54 AM

though the fish oil might be in the <10% of the proprietary, non hazardous ingredients.....

2500HeavyDuty 05-07-2010 10:59 AM

so there is a 10% chance that i will be ok, if i eat it then?
