Alaska, however, is the best kept secret, for both Army and Air Force members. I fully intend on retiring up here, and never leaving. I moved from Ft. Rucker, Alabama to Fairbanks (Ft. Wainwright, close to Eielson AFB) in June of 2008. Bought 2 each tandem-axle trailers brand new in Georgia before I left, moved myself all the way up here, had the Army pay me over $34K to move myself, sold the trailers and MADE $7100 on them, and bought a house on a lake in North Pole (the City, not the geographical reference!). I spent 11 years on and off in Tennesee before coming up here (Clarksville). If you like to hunt, fish, and enjoy scenery then you are gonna love this place. If you are the inner-city / urban-type that is high maintenance, then you will more than likely not enjoy this place. Never seen so many diesels, though. The only dynomometer in the state is in Anchorage, too. Your winters are warmer than mine down there, but my summers are warmer and the summer days longer up here in the Interior. Today was about +80F, coldest last winter was about -45F. Super dry in the Interior, more humidity in Anchorage. Welcome to The Last Frontier. :c:

Hey Guy when did you get to Ak, I think we met at the lemon lot on Ft Wainwright when you put your trailers up for sale. maybe summer 08, we left in Sept 08 and moved back to Ohio, Sometimes I wonder why we did :argh: we were up there over 20 years.( retired AF) I sure do miss it. Good luck.



Bring a camera, hiking boots, and a revolver that has a caliber starting with at least a ".4" and the word "Magnum" after it. Wife carries a .44 Alaskan, I carry a .454 Alaskan, and my idea of "BEAR SPRAY" is 00-Buck from the Benelli M1 Super90 Tactical!:w2:

If you have kids, do yourself a favor and search the web for registered sex offenders addresses before you buy that dream house you've always wanted (keep your "bear spray" handy for just such occasions!).:bat: Not sure why, but it seems that a lot of people in Alaska are here because they are running from something in the lower 48. If you dig right-wing conservatives and lots of open-carry guns, mountains, and garage sales, you've come to the right place. If you like smelly tree-huggin' hippies, just stop by the nearest college. They are full of 'em up here!:argh: (Again, "bear spray" works on them, too!)

Buy two large freezers. One should be labeled "SALMON". The other, "MOOSE", or "CARIBOU", whatever floats your canoe. Buy a quad (4x4 four-wheeler), it will be about the best money spent up here. So much to do, so very, very much to see. If you ever have to choose between fishing next to a grizzly, or a mother moose with a calf, pick the grizzly. Those moose can KILL YOU!!!:tu:
