Took my OLD BMW to the DYNO...

Well, here's the story...

I bought this BMW E34 M5 off a buddy of mine wich sold me the car restored and very well kept.

Ever since i got it there have been minor problems that have got on my nerves and one of them is a really rough idle.

I've done EVERYTHING to fix the idling problem including replacing almost all vacuum lines...

So, the car came 232kW (315hp) from the factory, wich is pretty good in the year 1991, with a top speed of 271kmh (electronically limited to 257kmh)

After fixing all the vacuum lines and cleaning the intake manifold and multiple intake runners, i took the car out for a drive (on a closed circuit) and i managed to reach 285kmh (on the speedo) and then i was running low on gas so i stepped off.

I found this rather wierd and decided i'd take the car to a dyno and see what it would say.

WELL, i was amazed 284,9kW (383hp) @ 6910RPM / 4th GEAR (1:1 ratio) and 476,2Nm (351ft.lb) @ 3740RPM..

I'm not sure how much it should be pulling OEM, but both me and the specialist at the shop agreed that fixing my idling problem would require me to install OEM camshafts :D

For that car were 3 different cams available directly from BMW. street, rallye and race.
The last two causing idle probs due to huge valve overlap...:humm:

i've been reading about SHRICK cams, producing 290kW @ 7070RPM, those are pretty close numbers to what i've got...

This is a S38B36 powered E34... it's not the S38B38...

Schrick really does know his job, if so you don't have only the cams, you also have reinforced springs.
Just make sure to warm up the engine carefully.:tu:

I always wait for the oil temp to reach 65°C before i even consider moving it !

Engine idle isn't good too.
Get an engine heater from webasto or espar.
I have it since a couple of years to avoid cold starts.
5000 Watts to heat up the coolant real quick to operating temperatures.
Driving is better for the engine then idle.
(lot less wear and condensation)
Just drive careful. :c:

Does that one have the vanos unit?If so the vanos seals go out in the vanos throwing the timing are to hell and causes idling problems.I want to say it does not be its info I will past on if it helps.I have a 2002 bmw supercharged M54 engine with a zionsville coolant system.Nice car and numbers always loved the M.

VANOS wasn't available till 11/92 on all BMWs, this one is a 03/91...
