So Who Knows The Answer To This Question?
ok here is the problem. i have a very large boulder in my driveway that i want gone. i have a med size old backhoe but it can not move it. i have tried a 110v jackhammer , pounding it with a sledge hammer , driving a steel wedge into a crack , air chissel and nothing seems to work...then i was thinking about the rocks around my fire pit how they are all cracking from the heat of the bonfires...if i get a torpeido heater and heat the rock up super hot and they dump a cooler of ice water or hit it with a co2 fire ext. do yas thing it would break it?.....or do you have another way to break it?
|
I don't think heating it would be feasible....I would try drilling it and use maybe gunpowder and a fuse and blast it apart. That would be more fun than a heater or jackhammer....:j:
Can you not winch it up on a trailer? |
That doesn't even sound like a safe idea at all...I wouldn't want to be anywhere near that thing when you dump ice water on it.
|
cant blast it too close to the house...cant winch it its too heavy...
|
yeah if that thing's even slightly porous and you heat it/cool it like that you're gonna have one hell of an explosion and in the need for 6 pall bearers. if it's that big and that heavy you got issue for sure. maybe use backhoe to dig a pit and then dig under the rock so it falls in the pit. cover it up and be done.

How big is this rock anyway? How tall is it? |
Ya got a Cummins man......throw a big ol chain around it and drag it in front of your neighbours place.
|
When i say blast it, i aint talking about using a suitcase full of C4 and sending pieces of it into orbit... just a small explosion in the drilled out center can fracture it where it will seperate.
Park your Dodge between it and the house when you light it off... |

post some pictures. Maybe that will help some of us come up with some ideas
|
A crane, you can usualy get these mobile crane guys to come in for quick jobs for a few hundred cash under the table. Just give em a place nearby to drop it and let em show up whenever they have time and they just slide in there in between jobs. Just make it easy and convenient for them, otherwise they charge you for a day and that's a lttle spendy. But if this crane can't move it, it's still attached to the mountain under it.
|
pay a guy with a back hoe to dig it out and fill the with fill dirt

I have been up against this very quandry a few times in the past with my construction biz .............I have dug a hole next to the rock and then undermine it till it falls in the hole..................I think yer best option is to rent a big compressor and a jack hammer......you will want to get it 1 foot below the surface then compact good road base over it or you will end up with a stress fracture crack in yer concrete ifin ya dont
|
ok here is the one we are talking about
and here is the other side of it and while i was at it here are 2 more but the big one by the house is staying i like that one... this one i want to split also |
That first one by the trash can don't look too big to drag it with yer cummins....

yeah if you're having problems with the one in the driveway you might as well plan on living with those other 2 for awhile. i think drilling and blasting are the about the only way to split those boys and there kinda close to the house.
|
The one in the drive appears to have a crack already. Thats a good sign.
If that piece can be dropped off, maybe roll the remainder over, away from the drive. Just thinking out loud.... Good luck. |
yea the one in the driveway is cracked in 2. there was a company putting in new traffic lights near my house and they had a full size backhoe with a hammer on the hoe end of it and that is what split most of it. but they got caught by there boss and had to leave right away and could not finish...

RENT A JACK HAMMER
|
Rent a hoe with a hammer on it. 10 min and the job should be done. If you were a little closer I would try to get my crew to swing buy and break it up for ya, but you are a little far for them to just swing buy without getting caught.
|
Drill a 1" hole about a foot deep, pour in a little ammoniun nitrate and some diesel fuel.
Place a firecacker above, light and run like hell! |
what kind of backhoe do you have that wont move that

my backhoe is a 1960 ford 600....she`s old but she works |
That right there would give me justification to buy a hammer drill and a bigger BFH......:w2:
If you had enough holes in it, you can always pound on it with the backhoe... |
here yah go, this might take care of it

K, so that might get it done there Bow! Even if not, cool vid!
IF you don't want to rent teh equipment you need, take a lesson from the old school, like WAY old school. Figure out where you want to fracture it. Snap a chalk line or use orange ground paint. Every 6-8 inches use a hammer drill and drill a hone about as deep as you can. Get some wood rod the same size as the hole. Drive teh rod into the holes all the way to the bottom. Now, you need to get the wood WET, like it needs to absorb alot if water. Maybe set a sprinkler up to spary on it for a few hours. The wood will swell and in theory, crack the rock. This is how the Egyptians used to break off slabs of rock. Might be a cool little science experiment to get the local kids into . . . . . |

Where the hell did the ancient Egyptians come up with a chalk line, orange paint and a hammer drill. You been test drivin trucks in a closed up garage againt, haven't ya.:yeah::tttt: |

it wasn't the egyptians, i think the show was on the pagans. how they moved huge blocks.... i dunno may have been the Greeks? i sat around sunday and watched a ton of the history channel is what they did was. they took the block and incased it in with 4 wood sections to make the block round so they could roll it. |

The same idea applies to using water... drill your holes (as many as you can in a line across it) and fill them with water this January and let them freeze repeatedly...keep the water full. »»»»»»»»»»»«««««««««««« AutoMerged DoublePost »»»»»»»»»»»««««««««««««

Thats a kool idea and it would be interesting to try....but i like the explosives idea better...even them egyptians would have used gunpowder and a fuse in a heartbeat over wet sticks...

find someone with a bigger hoe near you and give them $50-$100 to bury it

DO NOT HEAT IT AND THEN SUPER COOL IT!!! Depending on where you are in PA that is either a sandstone or dolomite both of which will explode when heated and supercooled. You can have it demo'ed with shaped charges and your house will never know what happened.
