Just got back from the Doc.....

Well, for awhile now the doc has been concerned about my blood pressure, high (140/100) I guess this bad. So today he decided to put my on meds. We talked about diet, weight and excersize. I know diet/weight is an issue, but the exercise part is the problem. I have arthritus/degenerate joint disease and this makes the exercise part difficult.

Any thoughts, suggestions from any of you out there with high blood pressure? Thanks

That sucks man but the truth is taking the the meds for the rest of your life is better than having a stroke.
Mine is borderline high 135/90 and I am trying to change my diet and loose 10 lbs. The Dr. i have is a drug pusher and wants me on meds but i refuse since it's only borderline and i can still change it myself.

I too have issues with hypertension and you can do far more than you think by removing ALL the table salt and reducing the packaged Sodium than you think. I did that about 8 years ago and although it still flares up based on stress the BP is now around 130/85 or so. When you get those numbers more than 50 apart things are not as they should be and when they are 70 apart you are literally destroying your insides daily. (ok so I'm no doctor, but you get the idea).

Sodium is the silent killer - eating out will put you over the top as will eating almost anything that is packaged. Stay away from white flour, white sugar and enriched anything and you will be ok. The more veggies and whole wheats you have the better as well. Removal of all deep fired anything and you will loose 20 pounds in a year without doing anything else.

Anyway, been there done that. I would stress that just get out and walk around the block at night is a great idea. If you are really badly sore from joint pain do it in the pool. It really works.

Cheers

For low impact/stress exercise...areobics in a pool is good...my uncle has pretty much the same health problems u describe and he has found that doing water areobics fits the bill pretty well...A lot of gyms/health clubs have programs/classes for this...

Great suggestion. Aerobic excercise is just as good. The pool is an excellent place. Sodium, as mentioned, needs to be restricted. That can be real tuff if you like flavor:) There are potassium salt substitutes, which can be a good source of potassium that you may be losing being on a diuretic.(assuming you are on one, that's usually first line)
