When I traveled to AZ -- some stations there wouldn't accept debit/credit transactions... or if they did, they charged you a fee

it is true that people aren't making $$ off of the sale of the gasoline - the profit margins shrink as the price goes up and up to where people won't pay for it.

but what this guy fails to realize is that the fuel sales are just to lure people into the store to buy other stuff! Wonder what their profits were on taht stuff?

When I lived out farther from town there was a gas station there who also sold basic needs, cooking things, meds toilet paper. So that if you ran out you wouldnt have to drive so far just to get those few things. The owner told me exactly what you just said that he makes basically nothing off of gasoline and the only reason he has gasoline is lure people in. They would buy their stuff at walmart and mark alot of it up 50%. People complained but they also didnt stop going there because it was easier. He said almost 100% of the money he makes is off of drinks, cigarettes and food.

they should, even though i don't think they are supposed to.

so if they not supposed to charge more for people useing credit cards..

what if they just offer a dicount for cash payers, hmmmm
depends on the wording huh

when we go on big trips, I carry cash for fuel, incase I run arcoss those types of stations.. seems more and more are that way -- even advertise on their huge signs Cash and Credit prices... it only makes sense with the way the Credit card companies are charging for people to be able to use the cards... they get it comming and going - they get the interest/fees/whatever from the consumer and they charge the merchant for the ability to accept those cards...

but at the same time who wants to carry that much cash on them? when my dad opened up a speed shop in late 80's he wanted to offer a cash discount and was told he couldn't so now why can the gas stations do this? I guess it's how you word it... not a cash discount but a credit fee.

Casinos for the big truck stops, or at least a couple machines for the small stations. For the few that don't already have them.

well i don't think you can advertise "cash discount" although i have seen places do it.
personally i have no problem with it.

but i go to small business like pawn shops when i want to buy tools.. and hagle a bit, also i let them know i'm paying with cash, then they usually help me out a bit more..
