Lawnmowers????

I got rid of my Deere riding mower and I'm looking for a walk behind. Anybody got any suggestions. From what I've seen, they all appear to be about the same. the only difference I've noticed is the name on the side of the mower and who's prouder of there product. I thought about buying a deere again, but there pretty much identical to the Craftsman mowers, just a different color.

In my landscaping days I had one that mows on its own.
It drove itself, best way, less work..great for hills all you to do is hang on so it doesnt take off on ya...no pushing...i will see if i can find it to show you....... youll never go back to push mowers....:U
its called a self propelled lawnmower.......http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/h...lled_lawnmower

I'm definetly getting a self propelled! I've noticed they make rear and font wheel drive mowers. The rear wheel I would think is stronger and more reliable.

Yes rear wheel drive is better. It won't dig ruts in your yard and will climb hills. Front wheel drives lose traction when going uphill and are a pain.

I bought a Toro 4 years ago because I like the "personal pace" self propelled design. I love it now. It moves however fast you move so you aren't trying to hold some handle halfway down to slow down when needed. This is great as my yard is thick St. Augustine grass. When it gets thick I have to go slower. With the Personal Pace system, I just walk slower and the mower adjusts. Much easier. The mower has been trouble free for 4 years and I have a 12,000 sq ft yard I mow every week - 10 days for about 9 months of the year. I just change the oil and spark plug each year.

Those Toro's are one of my favorites as well. The only thing I hate about them is the Briggs & Stratton motor... They suck. Get a Tecumseh, or a Kohler and you'll be real happy you did. The only other thing I like on some other mowers are the caster front wheels, so you don't have to lift the mower to turn it, it actually helps grass health as well. Being that your not plunge cutting the grass, you run less risk of tearing the fibres rather than cutting them.

Personally, I like Husky equipment, but they're not real cheap. Too bad Stihl doesn't make a mower... I'd buy one to match the rest of my stuff, saws, trimmers, hedgers...

I got a cheapo MTD from Fleet-Farm. I've had it for 5 years so far and it's been damn good to me.

It replaced another MTD which would still be with us today if someone :w2: hadn't gotten mad and repeatedly slammed it against a big cotton wood when it wasn't running right.

greasemonkey 05-21-2008 12:04 PM

I've always wondered if husky mowers are as amazing as their saws, our 257 husky saw's been really good to us.

as much junk as they make, I've been happy with the two craftsman mowers I've got(well, the one is at least 15 years old, when they were still making good stuff...) the newer one is so-so...eh, I'd buy one on clearance...

how about this one, it's lighter...:w2:

is there a push mower with AWD, open diffs and a turbo...? ooh, I just noticed on Husky's site they have a hovercraft mower! you know you want to try it...

Uncle Bubba 05-21-2008 12:28 PM

In my case I buy the cheapest mower I can get that is self propelled and adjustable height and throw it out and the end of the year. It's usually under $200 if you find it on sale and get at least $30 for it from the used mower guys if it's still runnin right. Doin this I never have to fight gettin it started again in the spring after it's sat for months, don't have to store it and walk around it all those months either and I never have to worry about workin on one.

Mine is the Tecumseh motor

I'd say find one with a honda engine .. Briggs and Scrap-iron is ok but those honda engines are just on a whole different level. Or if you want to piss off the California Air Resources Board go with an old Lawn Boy two stroke.

Hahahahaha... If you have a small yard those mowers are actually really nice, they cut the grass extremely cleanly when they're sharp. I have a bunch of Husky saws, a 340, a 257, and a 359, all run great, especially with a ported muffler. They aren't my big saws, but they get the limbing and small tree's out of the way for the big boys.

They're mowers really are the cats meow... but whatever blows your dress up will get the job done.

As for throwing them out at the end of the year with a cheapo, why? You can get a good Honda or Husky for less than $500, and all it takes is a little Sta-Bil fuel additive to keep it good til next season, of course change your oil, and air filter, but it should last 10-20 years if its taken care of properly, $500 over even 5 years is $100 a year, vs buying a $200 mower every year, it just makes sense to invest.

I have a Stihl saw that is older than I am, and its been beat pretty well, but always maintained. It still fires up in 10 pulls or less, and the cost of it if you spread it over the years is probably less than $20.

Buckshotmckee 05-21-2008 02:44 PM

I was actually looking @ a Husky or Snapper out of all the mowers until I saw that comparison between the mowers. The Craftsman seemed to be a good value, but, if you look @ the comparison info between those 11 mowers, like I mentioned earlier, they all seem about the same. Decisions, decisions???

I had lunch with my pops and he told about a local place that's going out of business so I'll go check out what he's got and go from there.

greasemonkey 05-21-2008 03:13 PM

tye what does the comparison you mentioned cover...is it basically a features/price eval? Both Craftsman mowers I mentioned are pretty old, even the newer one is about 5 years old...I'm not real impressed with their recent quality. we had a bunch of problems with our craftsman pressure washer and ended up just buying a new one after it was in the shop for 'warranty' work so often that we couldn't ever use it...

I have to agree with McCall, the more pricey stuff is gonna be WAY cheaper in the long run...only reason I have the old craftsman push mower is it was free!

Well..... I ended up with a Cub Cadet! I got a hell-of-a-deal on it @ Home Depot! Somebody bought it, didn't like it and returned it. I got it for 25% off of the original price and the full 3yr warranty on it so I can't complain!

I just bought the same mower 2 days ago. I got it from Home Depot for $229. The guy wouldn't believe me when I told him it was the self-propelled model and sold it as the push type cause he insisted that was all they had. Whatever.

It's a nice mower but watch out for that self propell, it fly's. Gotta run to keep up with it. Haven't read the manual yet to see if it is adjustable. And when the bad gets a little full it tends to ride a wheelie. The front end comes right up.

You must have read the Consumer report on the mowers, the same place i read and went and bought this one.

Buckshotmckee 05-21-2008 11:44 PM

Been doing my homework on them. I was going to go with a Husky, but when I stopped at the dealer today they told me to stay away from Husky self propelled mowers, lots of problems with the drive.

The motor on the cadet is supposedly made by cadet, but I have my doubts about that. The cadets were sitting next to the Honda's and the motors are identical! SO, its really a Honda motor or, Cadet built there engine identical to the Honda?

I got mine for $200+ tax! Can't complain about that. The sticker was $287.

bow2no1 05-22-2008 05:39 AM

we have 2 troy built self propelled walk behind mowers at work... some how i managed to break them both the other days.. the boss it P.O.

the 1st one i hit a property steak broke the belt that keeps the blade in time.

the other one i'm not sure what i don't i head this noise like i suked up some rope?
so i shut off the mower looked under and the blade whet hitting each other.

one blade the bolt that holds it on was loose. i could take it out with my fingers.
i dunno. my boss blames me said i must have hit somehting.

i'm blaming him cuz he put the blades on.

San Antonio has a deal to "help" the environment ... they'll give you $80 for your gas mower if you buy an electric one.

I thought about it, until I saw the kid down the street struggling through some thick grass with his electric mower; that a gasser wouldn't even sneeze at.

We are on the edge of the EPA air quality limits or whatever for being required to smog vehicles. I'd feel better about it if San Antonio had any industry that caused our local air quality problems... but we don't. I am told our bad air comes up from Mexico City, Houston and Dallas and hovers over us depending on which way the wind is blowing. :argh:

Buckshotmckee 05-22-2008 09:37 AM

Here in Kalifornia ALL of our gas power equipment, newer stuff from a couple years back, are emissions savvy. I've noticed when looking @ stuff on line, we usually end up paying $20-40 more for emission friendly stuff.

MotorOilMcCall 05-22-2008 10:09 AM

No doubt about it, EPA even put a catalytic muffler on half the chain saws I run. First thing I do is rip them off, because it makes the saw run so hot they burn themselves up, even if you richen up the carb. I throw on pre-EPA stuff, and port them, then richen up the carb... gets you at least 10% more power, and the saw will last a lot longer.

dozerboy 05-23-2008 06:38 PM

I wanted a 2 stroke so I found a 03 Lawnboy with one there good mowers. Even the new 4 stroke LBs are good mowers they have a 6.5 HP Tecumseh.

Woody35 05-23-2008 07:33 PM

got a 6.75 horsepower craftsman with Briggs and Stratton engine. its piece of crap and can't go through 5 inch grass without emptying the bag after 2 passes. but i have fun and take of the muffler and make the thing backfire. after that i press the primer button about 85 times and put just enough fuel that it doesn't flood it but when i start it starts and starts smoking like a diesel engine. pisses my dad off

I bought a used honda self propelled push mower(rear wheel drive,3 speed) about four years ago.I've ran the crap out of that thing and it still runs great.I get it serviced every year before the mowing season starts. That thing just won't die.If it does one day i'm buying another honda.:U:

CornFed44 06-24-2008 01:58 AM

my dad bought a new snapper 10 years ago and gave me his old one which is now pushing 30. not sure how many engines the thing has had but right now it runs great with the 6hp honda i put on it last winter.

its the old walkbehind "hi vac" style of mower. the brand new ones still look the same. :U:
