I just lost my best friend in the world

I had to drop off my black Labrador this morning because she suddenly stated losing weight 3 days ago and the vet just called me to pick her up wrapped in blankets. She had heart worms and a stomach infection and died right after coming out of surgery. She is in the back of the truck right now and she will be buried aft home. Shelly was the best p et I ever had. She was 9 years old. The only pic i have of her is from last night sick as can be in the living room. She will be a greatly missed part of the family.

LORDDiESEL 10-03-2012 09:57 PM

Damn bro. My heart goes out to you and your family. I have a chocolate and a yellow, i would be lost without them.

So sorry for your loss. Stay strong and take it one day at a time.

95powersmoker 10-03-2012 09:59 PM

Sorry to hear man. My dog was put down before summer... It sucks...

RanchhandTCR 10-03-2012 10:23 PM

Sorry to hear that! I cant imagine to loose my first pup hes a German Lab mix and hes the best dog I have ever meet... Sorry for your loss...

Truck Guy99 10-04-2012 12:21 AM

I just came in from burying her with my brother and neither of us new it would be half this hard to say goodbye to a dog. She was almost named reeses because the day we bought her as a puppy at that yard sale, she reached over my 4 year old lap and ate my reeses cup. Then my brother thought of the name shelly, and it stuck.

Sorry for the typo above, she was 10 years old. While I was out there, I made a grave marker from a board. I also took a piece of ribbon that the vet tied around the blankets. I have never been so sad in my whole life. I guess I will just have to get over it.

RanchhandTCR 10-04-2012 04:15 AM

Takes time not easy, My friend lost his dog last year a truck ran her over and broke her back and he found her down the road from his house, and he had to put her down, but he just couldent do it, he called me to come and its hard having to do something like that to something someone loves so much...

Jazz 10-04-2012 05:51 AM

Sorry to hear of your loss also. Nothing harder then losing your best friend. Been there, It takes a bit to get over it. You may have lost a great friend but no one can ever take away the great memories:tu:

mossyoak54 10-04-2012 05:57 AM

Brother I can tell you it's one of the hardest things I ever had to do. My lab was 10 when he died. Never had any thing that was that loyal to me. It was like loosing a best friend.

I just got back from the vet with my other black lab and she has heart worms too but we got her meds and she will make it. I am taking my brother's yellow lab tomorrow.

Man I am so sorry this happened. I lost my old German Shepard Rottweiler mix a few months ago. They really are family not pets. I have always been a firm believer of burying my old dogs at their favorite sleeping spot. O'L Coco is out right on the tree line where she could watch the house but be well hidden.

One of the best dogs I ever had. Hands down she never once pooped in the yard! Always went to the woods where none of us had to deal with it.

You just have to remember all of the good times and happiness that your canine companion gave you. I love my dogs more than I love my brothers. At least my dogs won't steal from me and they are always out to protect my family!

Truck Guy99 10-04-2012 06:13 PM

Getting over it some, but still hard. Miss her like crazy. She has always been part of my childhood for as long as I can remember. When you own a dog, you never expect it to be hard to say goodbye. You never consider them dieing when you are in the yard playing with them, but it hits you like a fist in the face when it happens. It is always tough to lose a companion. Hope all is well for the rest of ya.

I dreamt last night that shelly was still alive and was sitting next to me being petted.

Ltk 10-05-2012 07:30 PM

i absolutely hate to hear that. i see my pets as parts of my family. we put down a horse last year that was 7 years old that felt like family also. our 26 year old horse is on his last couple months too we are afraid.. that will be even tougher.

4 months ago we put down our 16 year old chocolate lab. (im 18 years old) so he has been a HUGE part of my life... he ran away once for 65 days and we found him.. he had been shot, and was starving. but he recovered. he was ran over 3 times in front of my house but miracuoulsy survived all of those without a scratch.. i hate to lose a part of the family, but thats the thing with pets. they cant last as long as we do, sadly. i like my pets better than i do most people.. i woke up one morning after he had been sick for a few days to find him braindead pretty much.. organs shut down, eyesight went out, hearing left. when i touched him he jerked, so i knew he had no senses or anything. had to put him down myself, and it was THE hardest single thing ive ever done in my life. i cried like a baby im not going to lie.. i laid in bed and cried plain and simple.. :td:

i wish you the best of luck my friend! :)

It's weird how you can get take a beating or have your old lady leave you but loosing your dog will make you cry. I'm with you on this one. No shame in it.

I know what it is to lose a pet, and having to take it to the vet to put one down...

We had a Irish Setter that reached 19yrs age, and we eventually had to take her to the vet and have her put asleep because she had bad arthiritis. The guilt always eats up my insides...

We recently had our Rottweiler Ugla leave us and she just went to sleep and then her breathing got heavier and heavier and eventually she stopped breathing, beautiful moment and she just went away in the manner nature intended...

We have two more Rottweilers and two Miniature Pinschers in our household and you could see that they were shook up and realizing what was going on...

Our older Miniature Pinscher would watch over her and after she left he laid down with her and nobody could come close to her...

If you care i can post pretty pictures of my MinPin Icarus, as he's watching over her...

Dogs are the most wonderful animals in the world... I hate cats... so do my dogs :D

Truck Guy99 10-05-2012 09:35 PM

We took the yellar lab and she has heart worms too, but she will live too. All we have to do is squirt a flavored med into their mouth once a day and a few pills a day. We also caught them up on their shots and got them new collars. We decided to hold off on getting another dog until the others pass on. I guess our only other black lab, pepper, will be my new dog. No one will ever replace Shelly though. And yes, I cried too. I also cried today when I heard Eric Clapton's song tears in heaven.

Ltk 10-05-2012 11:08 PM

it takes a lot for a grown man to cry, but animals will cause that effect on so many people. i think one major reason is they dont judge or complain and are never in a bad mood. theres nothing a dog can do to make you upset really. i swear my brown lab, Reese, was smarter than most people. my dad regrets to this day ever getting him fixed.. he had one litter of puppies and the one we kept was so much like him, but he ran away..

dmaxjenn 10-06-2012 11:07 AM

sorry to hear about your Bf.Truck guy.....Shelly sounds like she has a good life with you. I never knew heart worms could kill a pet,or they were so aggresive?
how do they get passed from dog to dog? |Hayden was just in the vet with a ear infection. hes better now..I hope you never had to pay for the surgery after she died? lucky you got the others checked out... what were the symptoms of it?

Truck Guy99 10-06-2012 12:35 PM

They are not contagious through each other, but through mosquitoes that are carrying them. When the infected mosquito bites the animal and it can be in the dog for a few years with nearly no symptoms. The only way we even knew was when shelly would not come to us very easily and later started throwing up. The only symptom we saw in goldy was excessive panting on a beautiful day at 70 degrees. The reason for it was the worms go into the lungs and cause poor air circulation, causing her to pant like she was having trouble breathing as if there was low oxygen levels. The reason shelly passed on was her body was so sick it couldn't handle the surgery. The worms block some of the blood flow, and she was not getting enough so she suddenly lost a bunch of weight over the course of three days. The testing for it was very easily done with a blood test. The trick is to get it under control before they spread too severely. All the dog has to do is take a few pills a day a about the size of a pea and take a medicine by mouth syringe once a day. I am just glad we can save the others. But yes, we do have to pay for the surgery but we don't mind because the vet did there best and they shouldn't have to pay for my dogs health problems. She was willing to work out a payment plan for the 400 dollar bill for us. The vet is also coming out sometime this week or next to give our horses there shots too. We ask found out that one of our horses is about 90-95 in horse years! I think I just need to cope and push through for shelly though. But I would suggest to anyone to keep their animals in check and healthy. Hope all is good for others.

Sorry for your loss bud. It sucks losing your dog. They are always there for you and no matter what are happy to see you. I had to put mine down a few years back and it was by far the toughest thing I've had to do. Time won't heal it all but will help you cope

Truck Guy99 10-06-2012 04:42 PM

Thanks man. It is helpful to to know people still care. Got some name tags for their collars today and will be taking them more places. Shelly went many a place with me. Everywhere from fort worth to abilene to lubbock to everywhere else I could imagine. Goldy would be a bit too rowdy over the road if more than two dogs or get tangled up in the leashes. Pepper will be going more places with me and my brother will keep goldy going with him places.

Pyro690 10-06-2012 09:15 PM

Sucks man. I too know what its like to lose someone/something close. Sorry about your loss. :c:

Truck Guy99 10-09-2012 12:15 AM

Thanks man. I am pretty much over it for the most part, but still brings back a ton of memories every time I see other people riding with their black Labrador which is quite often. But now, its happy memories of being in the yard playing with her, not such horrid depression anymore. She will be greatly missed and loved. I appreciate everyone's help and support. Anyone else have anything to say?

COLETRA1N 10-10-2012 12:53 AM

I feel for you man it is never easy seeing an animal go no matter what circumstance. Im 20 and we just had to put my black lab down after 16 years of fun memories, it sucks

Truck Guy99 10-10-2012 02:34 AM

Yeah, it sucks man. Time will help it heal, but there is always the scar. I know how tough it is. Did yours pass on from age?:ouch:

COLETRA1N 10-10-2012 12:02 PM

No,I told my mom that we would have to put her down she was too strong of a dog to just pass. In the end she couldnt get up on her own (bad knees) and I couldnt take seeing her struggle anymore, sometimes you got to do whats best even though you might not like it.

Truck Guy99 10-10-2012 12:17 PM

Dang man. I bet that was a tough day at the house. Did that black lab have a name?

COLETRA1N 10-10-2012 01:23 PM

yep dutchess, we had a bulldog named duke so they matched. we have other dogs but none of them are as loyal or listen at all

Mdub707 10-10-2012 02:39 PM

Being that you've found all of your dogs to have heartworms, why not just put them on heartworm pills in the future? It's not very expensive. You can't do it right now, but after they're cleared up you may want to look into it.

Sorry about your loss, never easy losing a dog.

Truck Guy99 10-10-2012 04:17 PM

We found out there is a pill we can give them once a month as a preventive step that we'll be giving them after they clear up. We are more than alright with spending the money to save the others.

gwhammy 10-12-2012 07:33 PM

Know how you feel, just lost a little 12 year old minpin. Kind of hard when they lay on your lap everynight to lose them. Don't have a house dog now, first time I can ever remember in my 52 years. Got a two year old ausie that thinks she should be.

I can't imagine people who don't like dogs, always glad to see you no matter how bad things seem. Sorry for your lose, I feel it threw mine.

Truck Guy99 10-12-2012 08:19 PM

Tough one man. Hard thing to do.

Glad to hear it. All of our dogs have always been on it. The problem with heart worms is when you find them, you have to hope they're not so bad that the medication kills the dog. The medication always works at ridding the worms, but if there's too many it's just too hard on the dog and they pass away. I'm kind of shocked at how many people don't have their dogs on heartworm pills, but I take things like that for granted being my gf's father is vet. Again, sorry for your loss, I can't even imagine it. I just got my first dog last year (never owned a dog before) and couldn't imagine losing her. It will be easier to watch some family members go than her!

One of the best qualities ever. They're not judgmental, and always happy.

Truck Guy99 10-14-2012 02:10 PM

Ya, just been on harsh times financially. Has opened my eyes. We all take alot of stuff for granted unfortunately, I didn't realize that with shelly till she was gone.

Ltk 10-14-2012 10:33 PM

dont worry man, many people take things for granted.. especially if you dont want to think of the "what ifs" you know? its not a bad thing...

Bigg Redd 10-15-2012 01:12 AM

Dude, My condolences and sympathies to you and yours. So sorry to hear about your loss. You likely gave ther the kind of wholesome life she otherwise would have never had with another. She will be eagerly awaiting for you on the other side, when you are called home. I myself have lost a few and it surely never gets easier. Best Wishes!

Truck Guy99 10-15-2012 12:16 PM

Thanks guys, it helps alot. Been getting better and still miss her, but I know she was probably suffering from something kinda mild that got worse. She used to jump into the car or truck by herself, but the last few months she seemed to struggle a bit. I wish I would have caught it earlier, but I know there is no use worrying about it. What's gone is gone. We found out that instead of the pill once a month, we will be giving them a liquid once a month via a syringe in their mouth after this stuff clears up. Thanks for everyone's support.

Truck Guy99 10-21-2012 09:28 PM

Got the horses checked out and they need to gain a little weight, but it isn't severe. Thanks you all for the help.

Ltk 10-21-2012 09:44 PM

glad to know your horses are healthy also! i love my horses as much as i do my dogs.

speaking of that... all 3 of my 4 month old pups took off wednesday night with the mom... the mom came back thursday morning and i havent seen the pups since. :td:

ive spent probably 12 hours in the past 2 days riding around on the fourwheeler trying to find em.. probly walked 5 miles in the hills today looking aswell...

:( just gotta stay positive! already lost 2 in a year. we are so close to a mountain that its fun for them to play, but they tend to not come back... we cant find a way to stop this.. but were just going to dig an electric fence around the property and not give them access to the creek or mountain if they come back :argh:

Truck Guy99 10-22-2012 07:03 AM

Been there man!! Shelly and goldy got out once late in the morning and we didn't see them until about 3 or 4. My neighbors 2 dogs got out a few weeks ago and he didn't see them for about 2 weeks. Then one morning when I was working on a trailer, the dogs started going crazy barking. I thought they had cornered a cat, possum, snake, or some other kind of critter. I ran over there and sure enough, there they were running through our yard!!!! One had a collar, and one didn't. Thankfully, they were by the gate of the dog pen where we keep the dog leashes and spare collars. I slapped one on the red healer with no collar and started towards the neighbors house and brought them home safely. Don't worry, they'll t turn up.

Ltk 10-22-2012 10:06 AM

The thing is here is that they can run over the mountain and back down the other side and be 5 miles away by car.. And sometimes they end up about an hour drive away.. Its endless possibilities. Everything here is separated by mountains so what a dog can run in 15 minutes can take up to an hour and a half to drive there because you have to circle them
