Looks like my drivers side axle seal is leaking. I noticed the pumpkin getting wet a while ago but nothing to worry about. Now it drips and I can tell it's coming from the drivers side. Passenger side is still dry. Does anybody have any information on replacing these? How bad of a job is it?

 

If its the axle seal you will have to take the pumpkin cover off and remove the differential gear. The seal itself is easy to replace after that but you will need to set up the clearances again to insure the rear doesnt make noise or wear improperly. Are you sure it's not the pinion seal ?

 

No i cannot say for certain. Just roled underneath it yesterday and saw drivers side of the pumpkin wet with fluid sitting underneath the pumpkin and dripping. Didn't investigate very far. I want to wash it and then take another look. Just curious what i may be getting into.

 

Could be the pinion seal if the pumpkin is wet but the seal shouldnt leak unless the front hubs are locked in and the front shaft is spinning. There is a drain hole on the intake manifold that will leak on the pumpkin if you have an oil leak on top of the engine, usually that would be a line from the hpop leaking. check that too.

 

Nothing is leaking on top of the pumpkin. It's coming from the drivers side axle shaft area. And i haven't locked my hubs for a few months now so it's been leaking without them locked in.

 

if it's the inner axle seal, those are relatively expensive. the seal spins within its self and is a light press in to the axle tube then on to the axle shaft. uou need to pull the axle shafts, which involves pulling the hub and spindles. you can leave the knuckle on. then pull the carrier and ring gear out. knock the old one out then install the new one. make sure you have the axle lubed up when you put it back in.
