Ok so I'm new here, just introduced myself a few minutes ago and glad to be here. Here's my first question. Found the hour meter on my new truck (07 5.9) it says 1665 hours. the mileage is 46,000. Does that sound about right? or is that a lot of hours for the distance driven? Thanks for any thoughts about this.

 

That is an average speed of 27.6 MPH...sounds like a lot of idling or city driving.

 

That's what I figured too. Guess what I should ask
Is what is the average for most oil burners at 46k.
Any feeling about this? Also how many people pay attention

As long as the truck runs OK, its probably not of concern...long idle times caused cylinder wash down in early 3rd gens, which was addressed by "fast" idle control.

Some people watch the hours...there was a debate at one point as to change oil based on miles or hours. It probably makes no difference, I looked at it one time at less than 100k; never looked at it again.

I know Dodge does use the hours versus miles to determine if you have "excessive idle time" to give you grief over fuel system warranty issues.

 

Could we get some other truck's hourmeter vs odometer readings? I figure every time you come to a red light or stop sign, speed goes to zero, dragging the average way down. Slowing for a corner is gonna drop it, too, so upper 20s doesn't seem too bad to me, but I'd like to see what others are getting.

 

Mine was around 45MPH when I checked at around 100k...it depends on your driving style. Mostly highway is going to be less hours per mile versus someone in stop and go traffic. I've been known to run 2600 miles in less than three days...

 

Yeah, and highway at 55 with occasional intersections and stop signs is going to be different than uninterupted interstate at 75 or so. I'll have to take a look at the service trucks at work for a example of extended time at high idle. Drive to the job, idle up and engage the air compressor, let the truck set there til the job is done and paid for.
