Default Another start then stall... hard restart, I searched but no answer..

I have a 96 2500 with a new 6.5 as of 20,000 ago. Heads died and replaced last year, along with rebuilt injection pump, new externally mounted PMD, all new injectors, and glow plugs.. Truck always instantlly starts right up, even in the cold. HOWEVER right after it starts right up.. starts running rough, then dies, within 10-30 seconds. SOMETIMES it will clear up and not stall.. other times it stalls. When it does stall, it takes a few min of cranking before it even tries again, then will start up and run fine. Every other start for the rest of the day no matter how long it sits, (8 hours at work or job site) starts up and is fine, when it sits overnight the next morning is when the problem happens.

I talked to one shop and they said possibly a pinhole in a fuel line. allowing loss of pressure or air someplace? I do know the lines coming from the tank to the LP are getting rusty, the brake line in that area rusted through, I was going to change the fuel lines out and see if that helps.. just wanted to get your thoughts on what to do next.

I actually have to sell the truck for my dads estate, so I am just wanting it to run properly before trying to sell it. thanks!

It does sound like air getting into the line...those symptoms are consistent with that kind of problem.

The rusty fuel lines aren't encouraging. Check the suction line from the tank to see what it looks like.

ya suction and return line look both kinda crappy, I am goign to start by replacing that one, up to where it looks good and go from there.. I never see dirt build up or a leak anywhere, so its gotta be something little, just making sure my hunch was right, I want it running great for whoever buys it.

The return line is good as long as it's not leaking as it sees a slight pressure when running.

The feed line could have a pin hole that only allows it to suck air when running but not leak when off.

I had that issue once. Took a while to track it down. Always got a puff of air when cracking open the bleed on the filter manager. I went to a raptor 100 lift pump and 1/2 eaton push lok hose from the tank to the filter manager and no more issues..

It doesn't take much air to mess up a diesel, especially a Stanadyne rotary pump.....

I tip my hat to your ethics in wanting it running right before you sell it.

A rare quality these days that should be complimented.

Only way of telling where the leak is on a suction line is put 10 lbs of air to the fuel tank.

I had the occasional start & stall with long crank following otherwise seemed to run fine after some inspection found the lift pump was not operating due to bad oil pressure switch.

it was just pretty rusty, i didnt see any wet areas or leaks, but the rust was probably enough to cause a pin hole for sure.. considering in the same exact place a brake line blew last fall.. so it starts great now, little puff of smoke when it first starts up, then smooths out and runs good..
