Default Exhaust question

I have a friend that has a 08 duramax. He was wanting to know if he can remove the cat & put straight pipe in its place. He is going to do the deletes eventually but was wondering if he can start here. Truck is stock right now.

Ya he would be better off deleting the cat, dpf and muffler at the same time
