78 chev w/cummins running need help wiring
So my 78 chevy 4 door has a 92 5.9 getrag divorced 205 runs great I am trying to get the alternator working now and am trying to figure out what all the wires are for I am used to the chev with the couple wires. how do I hook this sucker up I am getting closer and closer to driving this beast,
I took a chevy alt and put cummins pully on it, and had to cut part of alt case to fit. The cummins alt is extirnaly regulated and the chevy is internaly so to use the cummins have to add a regulater.
I got a hold of fordcummins.com - Increase Horsepower with Ford Cummins Diesel conversion kits and bought a part that you put in the back of the dodge alternator to make it internally regulated and just hook up the wires like the Chevy, easy to do i think it cost about 40 bucks. i did this about 4 years a go and there has been no problems.
at first i crossed over all the gauges to use the Chevy stuff but the oil gauge would peg out and stick( i ruined three of those canister oil pressure senders) I then bought autometer gauges and left the speedo and fuel as Chevy. there is only one wire to the alternator and a couple to the battery and the rest are gone. good luck

Cool I'll email them and see what's up either that or I'll just find an old external regulator. But how do I test or what wire do I hook it up to i haven't tested the wires to see voltage etc.
The altenator has two ways of turning on. First is A type which is positive voltage exciting the field and B type negative or grounding the field. A 1980 ford regulator is A type which is the style of a cummins altenator. You have 3 terminals on the altenator the big one charges the 2 small ones are the field. Ground one of them and wire the other to the output of the regulator. Doesn't matter which small terminal, it's a coil. The regulator has 4 terminals A bat B ign C altenator D battery dummy light. Hope this helps

So there are 4 wires One is a ground it is grounded. Then there is one bigger one and two smaller ones a green and blue. So if I understand you correctly Hook the big one up to the battery, ground the green and hook up the blue to the output of the regulator. I do not have a regulator yet but if this is correct I will go buy one this weekend.

This is what I looked up for 1980 regulator. There appear to be 4 terminals I am guessing there is a voltage input the field wire and maybe a ground? Does anyone have a pic of what they did. I am trying to figure this out but have always been a chevy man and just dealt with there super simple alternators. So this is a new challenge for me
