Default Weird Sound from ZF-6 Manual Transmission

Hi,

F350 2001, manual transfer case, 6 speed We had our first snow covered roads and I had to use my 4X4. I do engage it on a monthly basis year round and drive a block or two on 4H. Yesterday was the longest 4X$ drive I have to do about 10 miles on 4H and not higher than 40 mph. Today I notice a sort of cabasa or shaker sound and can happen as early as 1400 RPM but will disappear at ~ 1700 or even much earlier. Not that loud and isdrowned by the heating fans noise.

Is this a transmission issue -- like a syncro gear going out. I thought those only happen at certain gears but I hear this a second, third and 4th and most probably because that's when I am at those gears, around 30-35 MPH

I might have hearing it last night and then today it is more obvious, it just happened after I had to drive in 4H and our temps dove to the teens and single digits. I will try to record it. And also, I think I was also able to hear it in neutral.

I will record it and post it on youtube as well.

Thanks

so it only makes the noise when in 4wd? is it kind of a growling noise? check the fluid in trans and t- case.

Not a growling noise. More like a sack of beans or small bb pellets.

It's making it even when it's not on 4WD and it seem to only have started with this cold weather. It's not constant and when you first move the truck you don't hear it. After maybe a half mile of driving then it comes. I drive the truck like a grandfather ( that is the car in front of me will leave me 4 to 6 car lengths easy from a stop light - because I usually pull horses and I hate jerking them in the trailer around so I always accelerate slow as a habit). I try to get to 4th as soon as I can (I don't count the low gear as first so 4th would be 5th for some). I'll check the oil tomorrow.

Applying more gas makes the sound disappear, releasing it makes it comes back all within 1400 to 1600 RPM.

Weird. It got warm today. Was above freezing (33) and noise is gone. When I started in the AM it was 9 F Transmission fluid is good but I will change it soon. Recommendations? just saw some threads about the new 75-90 gear oil but then there's also the thing about sticking to ATF

there is a reason it's called Automatic Transmission Fluid. not MTF. since i was lucky enought to do a transmission a few weeks ago, the tranny shop said run 10- 40 synthetic, motor oil. yeah i thought they were on drugs.
